And then does.... what?

Wild guess here, based on mainframe tape experience, but...

Maybe it's a labelled tape, and you're hitting the EOF marker after the
first label set?

Labelled tapes have the general format

    VOL1 HDR1 HDR2 * user data * EOF1 EOF2 * *

where "*" is a hardware EOF mark ("tape mark", a special data block
that the hardware recognizes). Voln, HDRn and EOFn are 80-byte
labels containing useful information such as the tape volume number
(in VOL1), and dataset name and data format (including blocksize
and record length) in the HDR labels.

Two consequtive *'s flag end of recorded data. *NO* (sane) tape
driver will let you read past that. [Unless you are in a
privileged mode ("bypass albel processing"), but we all know that
we _don't_ do normal processing as the moral equivalent of "root"
    now, don't we? :-) ]

If you're hitting the EOF marker, perhaps your tape driver is returning
an error? And won't let you get past it?

You _are_ assuming 80 byte data records, which might also be too
small. Depending upon the driver, reading only a partial block might
be considered an "error" (and prevent further reading.) As might
reading a block that is shorter than expected. Tapes are so much fun.
:-)

You're reading a 9-track tape (the 6250 density indicated this.) I'd
guess that it _is_ a labelled tape, unless you have specific evidence
that is is not. Try

Check out the FIC PA2013 (ATX) board. I've read really good reviews of
this board which has a number of advanced features, including a 1 mb cache
and upto a 124 mhz system bus.

Hey! I have a slightly knackered MVP-2X card, two tseng 4000 chips, twice
memory, and no support "even though" xf86config lists it as a supported
"card", it don't do the magic! Whats the deal with that?

I imagined UNIX based systems would have no trouble with opening two
display devices. So what's the story? Does anyone from redhat.com read
this ng? Why no joy? Why not just run two X11 sessions? huh!?

Subject: Problems with custom kernel and AIC7890 controller
Date: Sat, 8 May 1999 00:17:06 -0400

Hi,
I am again having problems with a new Linux box on an Asus P2B-S
motherboard, which contains the Adaptec AIC 7890 chipset. My
original problem was getting LILO to boot off of /dev/sda which was
cleared up by adding a Bios = 0x80 line into lilo.conf. The issue
now involves building a custom kernel. The system was initially
installed via a boot disk created from a Slackware 3.5 CD. During
install, I copied the kernel from the bootdisk to /dev/sda1. The
system boots fine using this kernel, however, if I try to roll my own
kernel it always ends up with a VFS panic. I have made sure to
compile in the necessary components: SCSI Disk Support, AIC 7890
driver, ext2fs driver, etc. I have tried about 15 different
combinations and not one custom kernel works. None of them will
detect the SCSI controller on startup and hence can't find the boot
device. It seems that there is something different compiled into the
kernel on the boot disk which is enabling this thing to work, only I
have no idea what that may be. I even created a kernel that had
support for every single SCSI card built in, that didn't work either.
I can stick with the kernel from the bootdisk, but the default kernel
loads a lot of junk that I don't want and I would rather save the
memory. I am also worried about future developments if I really need
to recompile a kernel to add some support for something in. Does
anyone have any prior experience with this SCSI adapter that can
provide some pointers or suggestions?

Thanks Much
Jay Ribak

I just installed Red Hat 6.0 and it doesn't detect my NE2000 compatible
ethernet card. The card is a SMC EZ 10 ISA. If I need to install a
device driver for the card, where do I get it from and how do I install
it? Otherwise, what settings do I need to make?

Thanks,
