Well, OTTOMH, I can answer the second one: Microsoft currently
supports only one architecture: i386. They _used_ to support Alpha as
well (Windows NT), but dropped that a year or so ago.

I'm guessing it's a dead issue, though as we haven't heard any rantings
lately...

The latest nvidia drivers v-0.9.6 support GF2MX
Also the xfree86 v4.0.2 supports GF2MX, but only in 2D.

Processors based on AMD's K6-2 (or K6-3 when released) will make excellent
servers. Cyrix processors will also do an excellent job. If the machine is
truly going to be a server (and not a duo-workstation like many people do)
then processor speed is not the biggest issue. I/O subsystem performance
plays a key part in excellent server performance.

3com, Donald Becker, and various motherboard manufacturers have stated that
it's due to the way PnP works on PCI devices. Fortunately, the 905 series
seems to be among the very few with the problem. The solution they
recommended is turning PnP off in the BIOS and _cold_ booting the machine.

works just fine.

a few caveats:

 - when using an active (powered/buffered) keybd/monitor/mouse switch
and going between linux and NT, nt would mess up the mouse somehow.
very annoying.

 - when using a cellphone near the rf cordless mouse, the mouse would loose its synch
and would need a power down/up to restore.

other than that, its great.

I'm looking for something more "high-end," I guess, but not terribly

Okay, you're right, thanks David.

Now there are not much scanners that are labelled stable. Most of them
are alpha or beta.
Is there not a special model you would advise, one which would satisfy a
not too demanding user?

For the sound FX to work you need to go to KDE Control Panel, than sound,
click on + sign click on System sounds. Than click the box to enable system
sound. Than reboot or restat x.

The 8.2 Gbyte limit is due to the design of certain PC hardware and
software systems. You should also know that SCSI drives are rated for
capacity when they are raw. A 9.1 Gig drive is about 8.47 Gig after
formatting.

Well, after I changed tape drives, it seemed to get super-picky about
its terms. Bear in mind you have to set that thing up either with dip
switches or the builtin bios extension you get when you hit a ctrl-a at
the right point in the bootup. I finally decided I had had enough of
picky, and threw money in the form of an Advansys 930-something-or-other
at an empty pci slot. Zero problems with it so far.

Cheers, Gene

Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 23:50:57 -0600

Hello all,

I've read thru the cd-writing howto at linuxdoc.org, but I am really
inexperienced with the whole deal. I compiled in the support for using
scsi emulation, scsi cd player, and disabled ide cdplayer in the kernel
config. My cd reader and writer are both able to mount cd's, and I'm
able to play audio with my regular cd player. If I ask too many
questions, I apologize.

>From the howto: do I need to make devices if I already know which
devices the cd hardware are on (/dev/sr0 - /dev/sr1)? What software do
I actually need? I see that mkiosfs or mkhybrid are mentioned in the
howto for images. Do I need one of those if I have cdrecord,
cdparanoia, and xcdroast? This is probably the most confusing to me.

If someone can send in a good sample list of software that would allow
me to write cd's and make mp3's (along with a recommendation of what
combination to use), I would really appreciate it. I also looked at the
setup options for xcdroast, and it made no sense to me. I'm definitely
not opposed to reading documentation, but I'm not understanding what
I've read so far. A summary of what needs to be done would be much
appreciated. Thank you.
