You're right, SHE should have mentioned that.
I thought I had copied the link with the rest of the information.
I should have re-read my post.

Subject: suitable backup hardware?
Date: 29 Jan 2001 00:45:39 +0100

Hello,

I need advice on what hardware is suitable for Linux to back up my
stuff sequentially (here I want to say that I do not want to burn
CD-ROMs because I would like to update the backups frequently - say
every other week or so).

I use an ordinary PC architecture, with an IDE controller. I do use an
old QIC-80 tape drive now (with a capacity of about 120 MB) which has
given me the chills each time I had decided to repartition my
computer because all my valuable data were on those tapes then... I
frequently have problems with this device, the characteristic of which
is that I never can figure out what the exact reason is: the ftape
driver, the distro (strangely, things don't work under SuSE 6.4 but
under 6.0), the tar program, the tape - a restore from one tape seems
to have damaged the filesystem, the next one works out: I think I
would like to have something I can feel more comfortable with.

The SuSE manual states that "since these devices [floppy tapes] are
critical to access with regard to timing, problems with saving or
restoring may often turn up." [hope I got the translation right]

Maybe this is the reason. Can anyone confirm that? Do you have any
advice what you think may be suitable for me: reliable, for a moderate
amount of data to backup (the size of the media may be under 1
GB). And - you guess it - affordable?

Is it more reliable to use a streamer which is directly connected to
the IDE controller? Or buy an SCSI adapter and an SCSI streamer?

That wouldn't account for a 33% deficit. It sounds more like the
drive was originally partitioned to suit the DOS <2 Gb limit
(and/or there is a BIOS limitation - I'm not familiar with the
PB 300CD).
What does fdisk tell you? If you have a 2 Gb partition and
1 Gb unused space (or another old DOS partition) you can delete
that and make another ext2 partition.

I have a All In Wonder 128 16MB and I am happy with that using with Win
98. I did not try to use it with Linux because there is no drivers /
software in my Mandrake 7.02.

I found some information provided by ATI:
http://www.ati.com/na/pages/resource_centre/dev_rel/linux.html

It seems that linux software / drivers are being devellopped:
GATOS (General ATI TV and Overlay Software): ATI-TV for GNU/Linux,
FreeBSD, NetBSD, etc

Well under both slackware and redhat there is a softlink called /dev/cdrom which
points to a real device such as /dev/hdc (ide) or dev/scd0 (scsi). what you need
to do is go to /dev and type ls -l cdrom and see where it is pointing. If you
know where your other cdrom drive is as far as which /dev/ file represents it
then you can delete the existing link and create a new one pointing to your new
device by typing

ln -s /dev/ /dev/modem

The of course represents the actual device name of your second cdrom. If you
don't know which device is your cdrom then there is an easy way to figure it out.
If it is IDE then which device it is will depend on whether it is on the primary
or secondary channel, and whether it is the master/standalone device or the
slave. IDE normally has the capacity for four devices. The primary master is
IDE0, the primary slave, IDE1. The secondary master is IDE2 and the secondary
slave is IDE3.

IDE0=/dev/hda (this one is most likely your hard drive, so it cant be the cdrom)
IDE1=/dev/hdb
IDE2=/dev/hdc
IDE3=/dev/hdd

You might already have noticed that the existing softlink points to one of these.
It is simply a matter of changing it to point to the other device like I described
above.

If you've got a SCSI system then things are a little different. On my system
which has an adaptec 3940 on board, the cdom is /dev/scd0, but that doesn't mean
it will automatically be that on yours. I don't have enough experience with SCSI
under linux to know exactly how it decides that my cdrom is scd0 and not say
scd5. My best advice in this case is to make sure you have the SCSI card working
under linux then try each scd entry in turn, starting with scd0.

i would like to get an inexpensive/moderately priced laptop pc (i have not
been able to install linuxppc on my performa 6400, so it's time to buy new

i read that certain components should be avoided because their manufacturers
keep their interface configuration proprietory(whatever that is),
also, that one should avoid a winmodem(which is what?)
please, advise me how to proceed

I used isapnp to identify my PnP boards. It found the Crystal sound
board and listed its parameters. However, when I tried to use the

 Hi,

I just purchased an Adaptec 1522A SCSI controller and a Yamaha 4416CDR.
Despite all my efforts to make these work with linux, I can't. The controller
is recognized at bootup, but the CD isn't. I've tried various settings on
the card with no luck. I figured it was a cabling/termination problem until
W95 saw the drive right away (I never told it about the CD but it accessed
it right away) and could read from it with no problems. To me this
suggests that the hardware is working fine. I've read through the linux
Hardware-Howto, the old SCSI-Howto, poked through drivers/scsi/aha152x.c,
Adaptec's web site, and even tried deja-news to find information on this
problem and have come up empty.

The one idea I *do* have, t
