last site i knew of for drivers was linux.aureal.com, but as i
just went to find the driver it's not up. so i went looking (at
freshmeat.net (and typed aureal in the search box).

it looks like this might work, but i have no idea if it will in fact
work for you.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/aureal

and this is the original drivers that used to be at linux.aureal.com,
but i don't know how stable they are.

http://www.linuxvoodoo.com/drivers/cards/sound/drivers/au88xx-1.0.5.tar.gz

good luck, (i don't run Redhat and i've not tried to mess with either
of these on my system, yet)

Grab the latest Aureal driver from

 http://sourceforge.net/projects/aureal

I think the latest one is 1.1.1 (maybe 1.1.2?)

just read the readme file first though, as you have to select the make
switch differently depending on which aureal chipset you have (Not
sure which one is in the Montego...)

You'll need OSS driver support in the kernel (which assuming you
didn't modify or change the one that came with RH6.2, it should be).

You won't need to reboot, it should just work after install if it
works at all. I've noticed that it sometimes spews an error message
after the install, but the sound works anyways, so test it with
something like XMMS first before thinking the install went bad.

Also, there's not supposed to be any MIDI support in the driver. I
say supposed, because some people have reported that they've gotten it
working (I'm not one of them though).

Anyone know what chipset the ProAudio Sound on a Compaq 1200XL-304
notebook uses?

They call it the "JBL Pro Audio Bass Reflex", but unfortunately, it
seems that their customer support people don't have any idea what this
is. The response was that this was a "PCI sound subsystem", which
doesn't tell me much. I tried doing a web search, and found some
info, but it seems that they may have used different chipsets going
under the name "ProAudio Sound Bass Reflex" in earlier models.

ESS1869
ESS Solo 1
VIA 686
"PCI sound blaster Pro Compatible"

Not certain, but that last one might apply to all 3 since they all
have some sort of sb emulation ability. So it seems that it might be
any of these or something totally different.

If anyone here has a 304 and has installed Linux on it, please let me
know what audio chipset you set it up as.

Thanks

The stuff about intel in comparison to amd is nonsense.

For the rest:

It pretty much depends on what you want. If you have only a couple of
big non threaded applications which you normally won't run
simultaneously then you are better of with a 1ghz processor than two
times 550. As a rule of thumb if you have well scaling os'es and well
scaling programs you gain between 60 and 80 percent for the first
additional additional processor.

And think of the fact that the memory bus is limited in bandwith which
is that the two processors share the 1.06 gb/s max (that was it for
pc100 -- right ?)

Threaded applications are not as common as one might think in the linux
world, and the couple of times you do a compile job where you do the
make -j2 or -jsomething doesn't pay.

So why not go for an AMD or Intel around 900mhz, they are not as
expensive (especially the amd's) and you do not have to pay for the
exorbitant high motherboard prices for dual.

You have a lot of fiddling around if you use it for gaming for example.
Not all the soundcards drivers are smp safe. And this goes on and on.

For server use that's another story but for daily home use, at least for
now I wouldn't recommend it.

Michael

Hi,
I'm running XFree 3.3.6 (default mandrake 7.1 install) on a P3-650,
128MB ram, and an ATI Rage Pro PCI card (not fury or 128, it's a year
or two old). resolution is 1280x1024x32bit, and it's really slw..
screen redraws, fills, etc., just take forever. but by comparison,
it's nice and zippy in windows. what's wrong? i though the mach64
server was supposed to be accellerated. is that just not so??

That's a good idea. You HTTP server could be servicing a lot of
traffic--causing undue response interference with your Oracle application.

My sister has an e-machine desktop. What an unrealiable piece of crap. The
running joke is not being able to turn off the "autoboot" feature. For not
a whole lot more, you could get a Dell or a Gateway. At least they have

I regularly consult with companies that have 10s of GB of data on Oracle.
Most of my Oracle work is on AIX, HPUX, and WindowsNT. You might get away
in the short-run using Linux on cheap PCs, but look forward to some heavy
iron when you get serious. Silicon Graphics is supporting Linux on their
1400L server. Compaq is discountinuing WindowsNT development on their Alpha
servers in favor of OpenVMS, Unix and Linux. Sun is even introducing
something called Hot Desk that has NO operating system. You can find out
"what's shipping" in each OS/Hardware combination at the supported platforms
site (http://platforms.oracle.com/linux).

What's nice about Oracle is that if you do change your mind about the
hardware or the OS, you can migrate your database to the new server fairly
painlessly.

Once you get above 40 GB, you are going to want systems that have multiple
processors and fast data channels. You are going to want some reliable
hardware. The only thing I've seen on the e-machines web site
(http://www.emachines.com/) was a page of directions on how to ship the
machines back to the factory.

Roy;
The best source of information for this kind of thing is the
manufacturer.
3Com is on the web and you should be able to find the specs for their modems

on their site. That will be the best source of information.

By the way, another "bad" term to watch for is "RPI" or Rockwel Protocol
Interface."
That is the heart of the Win Modem.

Best wishes.

Subject: Addressing SCSI Controllers??
Date: Fri, 21 May 1999 04:42:03 GMT

I have two SCSI Controllers in a Dell 410 Wkstn.
One is an onboard controller aic7890/aic7880 and
the other is an Adaptec 2940AU. Both use the
AIC7XXX driver. Apparently, because of a shared
interrupt on the onboard controller, the second of
two SCSI drives I have connected to this
controller cannot be seen if any device is
connected to the secondary port. I have relocated
all of the devices on the secondary controller to
my 2940AU and they function correctly their. I
can see both disks on the on board controller.
The only problem is that Linux is recognizing the
adapters in the reverse order from what I would
like. The 2940AU is SCSI0 and the onboard
controller is SCSI1. This results in
inconvienient addressing for my SCSI disks. The
JAZ drive and the zip drive I have connected to
the 2940AU are /dev/sda and /dev/sdb respectively.
The two hard drives are /dev/sdc and /dev/sdd.
This would be OK, except the BIOS apparently only
recognizes two boot drives and as a result, LILO
will not boot from the partitions on either drive.
I can boot successfully from diskette but would
like to boot directly from Sys. Commander.

Is there some way that I can get Linux to reverse
the detection order for the two SCSI controllers?
I have investigated devfs, but don't understand it
well enough to tr

FYI last July after I got the XPS 400 I looked at Opensound and they were
saying they expected a driver in August (98). At this rate it could take
forever. The moral of the story is if you want sound in Linux on your
XPS 400 you may want to switch cards.

Larry,

I've been running a K6-2 300 (Overclocked to 336MHz by running the front
side bus at 112MHz) for over 6 mos. This chip has been as solid as I could
ever hope for. I've re-compliled the kernel several times (while continuing
to surf and do other stuff) and it never even hiccups.

Despite the fact that I'm
