All this hardware works because they all have the fortune of being based
around America's top 10% hardware.

1. Soundblaster Live: PCI sound system from the SB64 base of sound
processors
2. Creative Annihaltor: nVidia GeForce2 GTS; the best, most popular video
graphics chipset in North America
3. Microsoft Intellimouse: It's a mouse. With token support for USB (which
was desgined around supporting MICE and Keyboards) in the Linux kernel, this
works.
4.Xirlink USB camera: Uses the same TWAIN dynamics that digicam's and
scanners used since the Casio QV-10, why it works over USB? Luck.
5.HP LaserJet 2100M: I'll bet you this thing doesn't work outside of 75DPI
printing. This printer features legacy firmware so it can accomidate a lack
of software commands.
6. Adaptec 2940UW: Nothing says generic SCSI adaptor like Adaptec's 2000
series SCSI adaptors.
7.3com 3c905 NIC: Another generic NIC card.
8.USB-ZIP250: Linux's USB layer was engeneered with mice, keyboards and
iomega's USB devices in mind. No DUH that this works.
9.Jaz 1G: It's a tape drive, it's from iomega. But it's still a tape drive.

So you see, your stock collection of top hardware, and hardware based around
other top 10% hardware makes your system the ideal runner for a Linux
distro.

Obviously why on my PC, such "archaic" hardware as:

 SoundBlaster Live!
Creative Annihilator 2 (GeForce 2 GTS based card)
 Micro$oft USB Intellimouse
 IBM (really Xirlink) USB Camera
 HP LaserJet 2100M
 Adaptec 2940UW
 Asus CUSL2 (i815e based) motherboard
 3com 3c905 NIC
 USB Zip 250
 Jaz 1G

all work without a hitch, right? Yeah, all of that stuff is ancient,
right?

Hello all,

My soundblaster PCI 64 (es1371) works fine so far for playing CDs, mp3s,
and wavs (all PCM output?). However, whenever I try to play midi files or
even open any program which uses /dev/sequencer I get an error.

In reading about our HP 34780A DAT drive, I found that a tape
that has been inserted more than 99 times is rejected and not loaded.

The technician on HP's Customer Support Forum said the number of
insertions is written at the beginning of a tape and is updated each
time the tape is inserted and, yes, the drives reject a tape that
has been inserted more than 99 times. He said he knew of no way to read
the number of insertions off the tape.

This, however, seems to me to be a significant problem if one looses
track of how many times a tape has been inserted!

Does anyone know how to read the number of insertions off a DAT?

However, it seems that it is not possible for me to use Linux, since I use

cooler than the Cheatahs he has installed in other systems (heat was a big
 concern in my setup).

I believe I've seen reports that the TekRam ultra2 controllers also work well.

Did you need to do anything special to get Linux 2.0.36 up and running? Did
2.2.5 offer better support for the Adaptec 7896? TIA

rob, I'm using a courier running 230400 dte. Its about $250 though.
The rockwell externals will run 230400. (zoom, diamond, others probably)
I bought a lucent but they will not run 230400 dte yet. Only 115200.

An external is the safest bet.

I lost some of the context, so I edited this down:

Yes, it works and it is fast. Definitely faster than Tape.
However, there are two issues that anyone trying to do this should
be aware of:
4. You cannot use a hard disk for convenient data transfer between
   machines.

Gee, I do that all the time since recent 2 gig SCSI drives are so
thin and small!

I tend to use slimline external SCSI cabinets because they
plug in easily, but there are removable drive bays available too.
The more advanced Compaq servers have hot swap drives like those
found in RAID cabinets!
