On Thu, 28 Dec 2000 22:23:11 GMT, mike staggered into the Black Sun and said:
I want to replace my computer with newer stuff (this P-200 system is too
slow to be any fun anymore). I'll probably buy parts and build it.
Problem is, I've been out of the loop for so long I don't even know what a
decent Linux baseline system is anymore. So:
This is a system for home use. I don't play any games. I use it mainly
for Internet and some working from home.

Which processor?
Which m/b?
How much and what kind of RAM?
What kind of video/how much video RAM?
I've always liked how easy IDE is but I'd like to get a scanner and a
recordable CD setup so should I switch to SCSI or stick with lower cost
IDE (I don't know jack about SCSI)?
I don't want anything that's bleeding-edge - I just want something faster
and more modern. And I'd like to keep it around $1000 (or less).

I'd recommend an AMD Duron, somewhere on the low side of the MHz range.
500? Don't know precisely which motherboard to get; my advice would be
to go with something from the middle end of the price range. Get as
much RAM as you can afford; RAM is cheaper now than it has been for a
while. 128M at minimum, 256 if you can afford it. If you're not doing
3D games, get a Matrox G400--really nice picture quality, works like a
champ under all modern Linux distros. Go ATi Xpert9x if you need
something dirt-cheap and reasonable. Avoid Intel; the price/performance
is worse than AMD's unless you must have SMP.

If you're getting a scanner, you have 2 options: SCSI and USB. The
really high-end stuff is SCSI; always has been. There are a number of
USB scanners that work with Linux; check http://linux-usb.org/ and look
under "Scanners" for the lowdown. SCSI disks are generally better-built
and cost more, but they use less CPU time and share the larger bus more
effectively than their IDE counterparts. A SCSI CD-RW is still the best
option, but recent IDE CD-RWs perform well and cost a lot less.

If you need max. performance, go SCSI. If you want lots of disks, go
SCSI. If you want to get reasonable performance for cheap for a home
system, go IDE.

And is there a Linux site somewhere which lists suggestions for system
components that will work together (not the hardware validation site)?

Eh? There aren't many problems of the "FooCard 200 doesn't work with
BarMotherboard BAZ-11" variety. I'd suggest going to
http://pricewatch.com/ or a similar site, picking out a set of pieces
that looks good, then trying to validate those pieces via
linuxhardware.com or your distro of choice's hardware compatibility
list. HTH,

Hello.

I recently purchased a panasonc "CW-7586" CD-RW drive. I plan on
running Linux-Mandrake whenever the CD arrives. According to
Linux-Mandrake.com, L-M only supports the Panasonic CW-7502 and CW-7582
drives. How do I set up my CW-7586?

Thanks.

I don't have such a configuration, so I have not had a chance to try the
following.
However, two interesting places on the web for just such stuff include:
 http://eunuchs.org/epson/index.html
and
 http://www.u.arizona.edu/~zdw/uniprint.html

Unfortunately your question is so vague that reading and trying stuff is
probably
the only way to get a more specific problem statement.

I hope that helps. I am under the impression that the uniprint drivers
could
require some color correction parameters to match the quality of the
Epson
supplied drivers (which are not available for Unix :-(). You might also

want to check dejanews to see if there is any good stuff in
comp.peripherals.printers.

For basic use, run 'sndconfig' from a command line. If you want more
capabilities, try the ALSA drivers.

I just installed Redhat 6.0 on my machine with sound card from Creative

SB PCI128. However I did not find any info in the docs, on how to enable

 sound on my machine.

Is there a driver that I need to download from some place ?
Are ther options under linuxconf, kdemenus, gnome utilities that I
 should be looking for ?
Is there any command line utlities that I should know about ?

 Any help is appreciated

 Thanks,

Does the Supra have jumpers? If so is jumper A0 jumpered or not? This is the PNP
jumper
(OFF=PNP Mode, ON=NON PNP MODE). I have mine jumpered for NON-PNP mode, so windoz
requires
that you create a Com port for it, that points to the IRQ and IO Address your Supra is
jumpered
for. Once you create a com port, then all you do is point your Modem Entry to that com
port.
If you don't have the jumper settings, send me a e-mail, and I'll send you the jumper
settings.

Hi all, looking for some help. Upgraded my machine to an AMD K6-III on
a cheap motherboard. Looks like it's a MegaStar AI5VG+ running Award
BIOS. I also got a Maxtor 10.2 ultra DMA hard drive. Problem is when
trying to install RH 5.1 from my old CD I get lockups. At first it
locked up while formatting the hard drive ( I used Disk Druid ). I
found out that UDMA probavly wasn't fully supported in the kernel that
is on my CD, so I tried disabling UDMA in the BIOS, no difference. I
tried creating smaller partitions (4 gig max) and didn't format all
partitions just / /usr /var, that got me into the install, but it locks
up just a little later while copying files. I have downloaded BIOS
updates for the MB and am going to try those. Since the old kernel I
 have does not seem to

Phil D. enlightened this group thus:
I'm having problems with time-out errors using Plextor's 32X CDROM drive. The drive
mounts OK, and sometimes it will work for a little while, but then nothing. It is
connected to a Fireport 40 card using the ncr53C8XX driver. I have a Zip drive
also on
the same card which works fine.

I am running RedHat 5.2, dual booting with win98. The CDROM works perfectly in
windows or DOS. I had this problem with Linux from day one, had to copy the Redhat
CD
to a hard drive partition to install. I've since upgraded the kernel to 2.2.3 but
the
problem with the CD persists. Otherwise, all is currently rosy in Linux-land.

Anyone have any advice to offer?

 Phil D.

Sorry my first post got messed up. I had the same problem with my Fireport 20.
I fixed it by going into the SCSI card setup utility and reducing the transfer
rate to 10 MB/sec.

Make a /boot partation and ensure that it is below cylinder 1024. Linux will
not boot (i think) if kernel is in cylinder greater than 1024.

The rest of the system can be created as usual.

Paul Pop wrote in message 5keU2.42237$[EMAIL PROTECTED]...
Hi,

I have a Fujitsu 8.4Gb hard disk on my system with an Asus TX97-E
motherboard. For some reason the BIOS does not recognize the full size of
the hard disk if I use LBA. The only option that works is NORMAL. With
this,
however, the number of cylinders is 16,383. When I run Linux' fdisk it
warns
me that the number of cylinders exceeds 1024. This is what the partition
table looks like:

DeviceBootBeginStartEndBlocksId
System
/dev/hda1 11 1020514048+
6
DOS 16-bit =32M
/dev/hda2* 1021 102115359 7614432 83
Linux native
/dev/hda3 15360 1612916383 128520 82
Linux swap

My problem is that Linux does not boot from the hard disk (it boots fine
from the floppy made during installation). I've installed LILO in theboot
record of the root file system. I've used the "append = hd=16383,16,63" in
the /etc/lilo.conf file. When I run lilo at the prompt I get the following
message:

geo_comp_addr: Cylinder number is too big (3119 1023).

^

(Where does this come from?)

I ran lilo -l and it told me that it added both the Linux and the DOS
partitions. However I still can't boot from the hard disk (system just
hangs
with no messages, I do not even get L.). In the DOS partition I have WinNT
and it sees the entire disk. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Best regards,
Paul Pop
