It didn't say it died (the small ppp monitor next to the CPU monitor continued to be displayed), nothing was printed to /var/log/messages, but I couldn't connect anywhere anymore, couldn't ping anything and couldn't resolve any hostnames. Thank you both. I downloaded and installed it, and the problem persists. I will have my wife check the physical media (her friend has a standalone dvdplayer, but may not work if the region is set, the dvd is European and I am in the US; could that be the source of trouble? I doubt it, Linux dvdplayers should not care about region). RE: upcoming java ssh2?
In that case, I agree with you. The thing is, it is easier to circumvent a firewall/ids/whatever than to buy a fw1 that costs 18k$ and who knows how much you will need to pay for the unlimited version if you have a large organization. anyway, I think that the corporates are going to loose that battle as long as the bandwidth is going to rise, and the hardware to inspect the information is going to skyrocket. Enter Linux, a moderate solution to a big problem. better Linux than nothing. It does come with costs, but as all polls suggest it is negligible compared to the commercial enterprise solutions out there.(non-linux) well, I think this thread reached its limit. * - * - * Tzahi Fadida [EMAIL PROTECTED] Technion Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] My Cool Site: HTTP://WWW.My2Nis.Com * - * - * - * - * - * - * - * - * - * WARNING TO SPAMMERS: see at http://members.lycos.co.uk/my2nis/spamwarning.html > -Original Message- > From: Shachar Shemesh [mailto:linuxil@;consumer.org.il] > Sent: Thursday, October 31, 2002 2:22 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: upcoming java ssh2? > > > > > Tzahi Fadida wrote: > > >i disagree, since as long that there will be free access to internet > >nodes, i.e: unlike some cellular companies that provide WAP services > >do(they only allow you to surf their internal wap pages) > > > >you can find a way to access these resources, since inside the > >definition of "allow a b c" you allow side effects to > infiltrate which > >is at the heart of the internet technology makeup > > > > > Forgive me for erasing your example. Subversion Hosting Needed
Hi good people. After the BitKeeper fiasco, I studied several Open-Source Alternatives and eventually decided that I will go with Subversion (http://subversion.tigris.org) for the time being. The problem is that I don't have a repository that resides on a permanently connected, high bandwidth server. So I'm addressing you: does anybody here has a machine with a T1 connection to the Israeli backbone where he can (and is willing to) host it? Subversion requires install Berkeley DB 4.0.x, Apache 2 linked against it and then its own program and Apache module. All of them can be installed in their own dedicated path and run on irregular ports (e.g: 8080). I already compiled and installed it on my computer so I can simply cp it and set it up there, if the need arises. But the critical thing for me is the host. Subversion works entirely over HTTP or HTTPS. that is true, no beef there, but i consider this a bad practice. if i were to manage these thing i wouldn't want to make my workers feel hunted or some kind of paranoia that many companies foolishly makes their workers feel. the easier and much better thing to do, is just limit the bandwidth and let the workers do what the hell they want. believe me, a happy worker would do more for the company than a one that thinks all day how to circumvent the system or if someone is spying on him. as i said, thats your worst nightmare. a disgruntled worker can do more damage than any cracker can. * - * - * Tzahi Fadida [EMAIL PROTECTED] Technion Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] My Cool Site: HTTP://WWW.My2Nis.Com * - * - * - * - * - * - * - * - * - * WARNING TO SPAMMERS: see at http://members.lycos.co.uk/my2nis/spamwarning.html > -Original Message- > From: Tzafrir Cohen [mailto:tzafrir@;technion.ac.il] > Sent: Thursday, October 31, 2002 10:16 AM > To: Tzahi Fadida > Cc: Robert Wallner; Linux-IL mailing list > Subject: RE: upcoming java ssh2? > > > On Thu, 31 Oct 2002, Tzahi Fadida wrote: > > > this just show how naive are administrators today. anyway, > as u know or > > not know u don't have to be a hacker today to do what the > hell u want > > if I wanna surf whatever the bleeping I want, I can do it > and be sure > > every person who know how to operate a computer > > That may be true for occasional surfing, ssh and other low-bandwidth > activities > > Mass downloading (and worse: mass-uploading) is really easy > to detect, > simply due to the volume of traffic.
