OT: Education info request

2001-12-13 Thread Stiven Andre

Hi list.

Sorry to be off topic but here is the only place where I can ask it and
be sure to recieve a correct answer.
I am at age of 18(before army) and completely confused how to get good
education in israel.
The only acceptable course I found is a RHCE from sivan.co.il.
But curretly I don't have anything so will it help me if I will have RHCE ?
Do I need full "bagrut" to get good job ? will any of Micro$oft
courses(A+,Network+) help me in my Linux feuture ?
I know about 4 of my friends that have the same problem, we don't know what
and where to learn even if we have money. We all dream about becoming linux
network admins but we don't know where to start our carrier. We read every
how-to we find we spend money to keep our free server always on-line to get
expirience but when we go to computer shop to find any PC related job they
ask us: where did you learn ? what certs you have ? and if we say something
about linux they lought and say common leave us alone please. I belieave
that many of you people pasted the same. Can you tell me what way should
people like me go ?

Best Regards
X-Kent

Re: OT: Education info request

2001-12-19 Thread Stiven Andre

Hi didi.
I know that it is perfect to be sysadmin in the army. I asked them for that,
they asked me ofcouse what education I have and I had nothing to answer. If
you could give me that names of people that can help me, it would be great.
I am not a fighter or something I am going to "Jobnik"
as I am the only son in single paren family. If you will give me their
names, can you tell me who are them as I will know what to ask and who I am
talking with.

Best Regards.

xawtv problem

2002-01-23 Thread Stiven Andre

Hi list.

I am using xawtv-3.54-5, I have Flyvideo 98 FM card (bttv) Dist: RedHat 7.2.

When I first ran xawtv without touching any configuration files It was
unable to detect any channels, but video input worked with sound but
black/white. I rtmfed the menual/bttv how-to and started to configure it for
my card tuner, card type. I tryed many card/tuner types, played with
frequencietys, and I was using scantv program to detect channels. After I
found right module/freq/card type and scantv found some channels I tryed to
run xawtv again. I stared but the TV screan appeared a little upper then it
should be, right click stoped working, and I couldn't shut it down, when I
tryed to do anything it was leaving garbage on the screen and I was forced
to relogin. I tryed to backup everything "modules.conf" checked for .xawtv
configuration file in homedir (doesn't exists), tryed to find xawtvrc
default conf file that is mentioned in menual (doesn't exists). Basicly
backed up everything as it was (even removed and then installed xawtv rpm)
but now I can't get anything, when I start it it stucks and leaves garbage
on the screan so I forced to relogin. Maybe it chaged any conf in /proc or
anywhere ? anybody knows what elso may automaticly change when I play with
modules ?

Best Regards.
X-Kent.

May be it will not help but. I had the same problem with my Radeon VE card.
It worked fine and then just stoped working with the same message. The
problem was in the TV out. If your card has a TV out and you have connected
something to it, just unplug the cable and then reboot your machine twice
and try to start the X server.

RE:Nic Goes Down after Netwrok Activity

2001-07-09 Thread Stiven Andre

When I turn eth0 interface up i see the indicator in the hub that it is connected. When the interface is responding and if i ping i can see that hub indicates traffic. But once i try to get any heavy network activity or just upload/download any file the interface goes down. The hub still idicates that the computer is connected but event when i ping it is not indicates any traffic.
I have only one NIC on that PC.

fork. system login failure

2001-11-26 Thread Stiven Andre

Hi List.

I have some strange probelm.
I have server running rh7.2 that works 24hours a day and after adding some
cron jobs I always recieve the following:

When the server runs about 10-20 hours I recieve an error "sh: fork Resource
temporary unavilable" for the first 3-4 commands I enter.
after that it goes normaly.
But if I will leave server alone for 40-50 hours I can't even login (Using
the console not remotly). When I type username and pass it logs me in for
2-3 secs after that writes something (not enough time too see what) and logs
me out. The server still functionaling normaly all the services wotk as it
should but I can't login.

Please don't respond with rtfm.
I would be glad to do that but I can't find what should I read.
"man fork" gives nothing.
The cron jobs were setup to run some commands every hour.
any sugestions ?

Best Regards S.A.

it is not the exact copy but it is very close, the original sctip has about
10-12 commands.

they both places in /etc/cron/hourly

May it confuse my 133mhz 32RAM machine ?

The root user also recieves much e-mails from (Cron Deamon)
saying: /usr/bin/run-parts: fork: Resource temporarily unavailable.

maybe but I can't be sure of couse I should find it out.
maybe I will try to remove the cron job that excutes it and I will see if
the e-mails still comming ? it think that if e-mails will stop than it is
100% problem with the vhost updater program.
But by now we are checking with the cronjob I added so I will leave it for
now.

I have added this cron job I was not sure about the "number of processes" I

I made a script with that line and exuted it first time manualy, I recieved

NAT problem

2002-11-26 Thread Stiven Andre

Hello List.

I have a home network (192.168.1.1/24) that I want to be masqueraded by my
linux router (192.168.1.1) that has 2 ethernet interfaces (eth0 to LAN and
eth1 to ADSL modem). My adsl and LAN connections work. I wrote a firewall
that
should do the masquerading. But I don't know why it doesn't work. My inside
hosts can't ping the internet. I tryed to "debug" it the way I could, no
luck. If someone has a free time, can you please check my rc.firewall that I
attached ? I rewrote it from the "fw-adsl.sh" and maybe there is something
worng. If you are ready to help and need other information mail me and I
will send it.

Best Regards.

Strange iptables behavior

2002-11-27 Thread Stiven Andre
Hi List.

I have my home network being masqueraded by linux router(RH8.0).
Network topology:
Linux router(192.168.1.1): eth0 to LAN, eth1 to adsl modem.
LAN = 192.168.1.*

I wrote iptables script that masquerades my network, but the problem is when
I run the script from the first time from /etc/rc.d/rc.local it works. But
if I then rerun it manualy (by root of couse) it stops working. Inside hosts
don't have access to the internet. My script does clear all old rules at the
start of it but it doesn't help or else...
I tryed to clear all old rules manualy and then run the script, no luck
still not working. I tryed to unload all iptables modules then "insmod
ip_tables" and after that to run the script again, nothing it doesn't help
too... Can someone understand what is going on ? Why it works only the first
time ? After the second excution the rules are seem to be the same but
inside hosts can't ping internet.
There is 2 LOG targets in the script, first with prefix "FORWARD PACKET" and
second with prefix "MASQ RULE MATCHED", after the first excution of the
script. I see 2 logs for each packet, first "FORWARD PACKET" and then "MASQ
RULE MATCHED" but after the second excution, when the NAT doesn't work the
logs doesn't show "MASQ RULE MATCHED"...

Best Regards.

hebrew filenames, documentation needed ?

2003-03-27 Thread Stiven Andre
Hi list.
I have surfed the IGLU web site to find any information on how to see
Hebrew file names in console. Everything I found were tips like "use
codepage=862" or "use iocharset" but no useful guide that will explain
the process of all the configuration I should make. May be there is any
documentation for it that is not on a website ? Why there is no links or
something ? Can you please give a direction where to search or point me
to any useful guide for it ?
I have a task to create a backup strategy for a Linux SAMBA server. The
configuration is:
/dev/hdb mounted on /home/public. ext2 file system exported by SAMBA.
Windows machines use that share and read/write to it using Hebrew
filenames(works without any problems). When I login to SAMBA server with
ssh and do ls /home/public all the Hebrew filenames appear as "?
.doc" or something. How do I convert it to normal filenames so I
will be able to copy them at Linux level ? I as well need the ability to
copy these files from a script that is run from crond. I am sure that
you faced such problems and have a solution for them that why I ask you.
Can you please find a solution for me or give me a direction where to
search for one ?

Best Regards.

Communicating problems with rh8 httpd server.

2003-06-07 Thread Stiven Andre
Hi List.

May be the post is a little OT becouse the problem may as well be in the
ISP(as I guess). So here is the situation: I have a rh8 server that is
connected by ADSL provided by internet zahav. The server runs apache
httpd server and some other services. The problem is that some people
are unable to connect to the service, both from Israel and from other
countries. There were a situation that I had 2 people that can connect
and 3 that can't at the same time. Is there any known problem that may
lead to such behavior ?
Here is the output of tracert from a win2000 machine that was unable to

Just as note for a great internet zahav support, I will notice that I
just called tehnician support(035763000 it is the number that their
official customer support center answering machine gave me at 3:51am)
and everything I heared was "A mispar alav igatem eino poel zmanit". 144

[OT] A note about internet zahav customer care.

2003-06-15 Thread Stiven Andre
May be the post is OT but some weeks ago i wrote a latter about problems
connecting to rh8 httpd server that was connected by
internet zahav ADSL service. The problem was that some people simply
unable to get any response from the server. After calling the
technician support and explaining the problem they replied "We are can't
hold responsibility of your services" and told me that the user is not
offline by now with a nice "Just press a connect button when you will
get to your office tomorrow". It took about 20 minutes to proof that the
user is on line. When I asked to ping the server(ping blocked by
firewall) and support guy didn't got any response he said "if ping
doesn't get through then the machine is offline and you of course can't
connect".
I spent other 15 minutes asking him to copy/paste the IP address into
his explorer address field and try to connect to httpd. Then was a 2-3
minutes silent and then "yep, I can connect to the service ummm...".
Neither of this helped me to get anyone who can help me with the problem
or at least tell me the email so i could send the traceroute response
that 5-10 people worldwide get when trying to connect. I doubt that
company i work for will use internet zahav in next 24 hours.

Best Regards.

Hi list.
I just had just buy a m515 USB pda and trying to set it up for a Linux

a Gnome-pilot. I choosed gnome-pilot as it work well with my evolution.
But is there any way to sync inbox emails from evloution to palm ? All
my searches how to transfer any documents/emails/something other then
contacts, datebook etc failed. I also tryed to find info but got
nothing, is there a way to mount a palm as a filesystem ? For example as
I mount my digital camera and copy pictures from there. I have installed
multimedia programs on my handheld but there is no way to upload
anything without a winapp...
Any idias/tips/suggestions what can I do to make my palm more useful are
very welcome.

I was about to set it up on my new machine and didn't find
any working version.

Bug? In version
downloaded from:

http://harel.org.il/nadav/software/sendsms/

When I am sending to orange it gives me:

[[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# ./sendsms "067 654037"
"fff" "fff"

[03/11/20 01:21] Sending
to 067654037: fff (fff)

Sorry, unrecognized cellphone
number 067654037.

Currently, recognized numbers must begin with:

   Cellcom:   052, 053, 058, 064, or 065

   Orange:    054, 055, 066 or 067

   Pelephone:
050, 051, 056 or 068

   Amigo: 057

followed by exactly 6
digits. Spaces and hyphens are ignored.

The same command with pelefone, but
number is recognized.

[[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# ./sendsms "050 654037"
"fff" "fff"

[03/11/20 01:21] Sending

ERROR: No ICQ SMS account defined in your ~/.sendsmsrc!

Please see 'man sendsms' for
instructions.

[[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]#

Every options give the same(without
spaces, with – instead of space etc)

~/.sendsmsrc exists and edited
properly

I tried version from source forge:

[[EMAIL PROTECTED] sendsms-3.1.2a]# ./sendsms -sYA
-n067654037 fff

Name "Text::Wrap::columns"
used only once: possible typo at ./sendsms line 661.

[03/11/20 01:25] Sending
to 067654037: fff (YA)

Unknown error sending message.

[[EMAIL PROTECTED] sendsms-3.1.2a]#

Any suggestions what can I use ?

Best Regards.

[OT] to list admin, members please ignore

2004-02-28 Thread Stiven Andre

Hi.

Sorry for annoying but I have problem unsubscribing my old
email accounts from the list as I am unable to send unsubscribe command from
those addresses.

I have 3 email accounts 2 old and 1 active

Old accounts:

x-kent at host mg.hopto.org

x-kent at host iclabs.net

Active account:

x-kent at host gon.co.il

I am still receiving the mail for three accounts, but I can
send only from gon.co.il account.

Can you please unsubscribe mg.hopto.org and iclabs.net
account? As I receive all messages 3 times.

For authentication you can send unsubscribe confirming
message to mg.hopto.org and iclabs.net accounts I will receive them but when I
reply it would come from gon.co.il

Again, sorry for annoying.

I don't want to make the list thinking I am trying to crack or
something..
May be the software will recognize that it is not my real address and
ban me. But if you say I will try to do it that way

Why not just set the "from" of your outlook to these addresses and send
the unsubscribe? If you can receive the mail sent there, that's all you
need.

What's wrong with changing the "From" header?

Linux supported notebook in israel ?

2004-04-22 Thread Stiven Andre
Hi list.
Sorry to be a bit off topic. I am about to buy myself a new notebook. I
remember hearing about some Linux supported notebooks by Compaq here in
Israel. Is there any till now?
Basically is there a place to go and buy a notebook that will have Linux
drivers for all of it’s onboard devices? Or what I have is to use the
web to check one by one notebook for it Linux support?
Any advices about what notebook configuration and where to buy it is
greatly welcome… (I never had a notebook before so I am unsure a bit
what configuration to buy…)

Best Regards.

samba-3.0.4-2 vs Win2003 Server as file server?

2004-07-20 Thread Stiven Andre
Hi list.
I maintain a samba file server for a some company that uses it for
sharing database files for their windows based administration program.
Currently we experience many problems with a program named "Business
Organizer" that based on MS access. The program often crashes with error
messages. Tech support complain about disconnection with the database
and poor network reliability and advice us to upgrade to win2003
server... I am a Linux ideologist(as we all) and would not believe in
that solution but there always may be some trick as my samba
configuration is very basic. Do anyone have any experience running samba
in mission critical environment? Did you have it running smoothly
without any disconnections? I always have this message repeated in
/var/log/messages:
  Jul 20 10:14:29 linux smbd[31608]: register_message_flags: tdb_fetch
failed
Jul 20 10:15:28 linux smbd[31608]: [2004/07/20 10:15:28, 0]
smbd/connection.c:register_message_flags(220)

Asking google about it didn't give me any good...
Anyway I don't believe that it may cause that crashes.

Here is my smb.conf:

[GLOBAL]
workgroup = KARTING
netbios name = smbserv
server string = KARTING-SERVER
guest account = nobody
security = share
printing = cups
printcap name = cups
#socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_SNDBUF=8192 SO_RCVBUF=8192

[PUBLIC]
comment = Public space
path = /home/fileserv
guest ok = yes
guest only = yes
read only = no
create mask = 0664
directory mask = 0775

[printers]
comment = Stylus Color 980 printer
path = /var/spool/samba
browseable = yes
public = yes
print command = lp -c -d%p -o raw; rm %s
lpq command = lpstat -o %p
lprm command = cancel %p %j
print ok = yes
use client driver = yes
guest ok = yes

I commented out that socket options as they don't seem to help.
Printing is poorly configured but it is not critical at this point.
The machine is p4 1.8 256ram. Running fedora core 1(samba is upgraded).
For some reason, after upgrading samba to 3.0.4-2 with rpm -Uvh I don't
have any samba logs in it logdir in /var/log/samba. smbd.log and
nmbd.log seem to be created but they are empty.

Can anyone give me some tips to fine tune samba as tomorrow we will have
2003server on another machine here for testing and the one that works
better will stay. Should I say Linux should take that race?

Best Regards
Stiven Andre.

PS:
if anyone is really interested in that test feel free to contact me by
phone 054-7654037-Stiven or ask me letter about test results by mail.

focus site in Linux browser?

2004-10-18 Thread Stiven Andre
Hi list.
Anyone knows why http://focus.msn.co.il/ doesn't work in any Linux
browser?
Should I install something to make it work or it's just incompatible
:-(?

Re: focus site in Linux browser?

2004-10-21 Thread Stiven Andre
Yep, there are many sites that don't stand with standards but the question
is, is there any way to read thoose sites on Linux box? I say it not becouse
I agree with this standard violation but it's too annoying having to reboot
to windows to check if there is a new car avilable for sale
Any "end user" solution for this around?
Regards. Stiven

stupid ass holes who dont know how to code JavaScript...

Is this code so hard to write?

 // load the xml
 if (window.ActiveXObject)
  xmlDoc = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLDOM");
 else if (document.implementation && document.implementation.createDocument)
   xmlDoc=document.implementation.createDocument("","doc",null);
  else
   alert("Could not create an XMLDocument");
