Re: running wine using a read-only windows directory

2004-06-16 Thread meorero

You can read from NTFS but there are still problems writing ti it.
Look at : http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/status.html#ntfsdriver

I wanted to do that myself in my dual-boot machine (that has WinXP) but then I've read
the following warning at Wine User Guide [
http://www.winehq.com/site/docs/wine-user/index ] , and didn't want to lose my files
...

--> 5.5.8. Installing Wine Using An Existing Windows Partition As Base:
  --> http://www.winehq.com/site/docs/wine-user/config-drive-main#CONFIG-WITH-WINDOWS
[quote]
We HIGHLY DISCOURAGE people from directly using a Windows partition with write access
as a base for Wine!! (some programs, notably Explorer, corrupt large parts of the
Windows partition in case of an incorrect setup; you've been warned). Not to mention
that NTFS write support in Linux is still very experimental and dangerous (in case
you're using an NT-based Windows version using the NTFS file system). Thus we advise
you to go the Unix directory way.

running wine using a read-only windows directory

I saw that wine can run on an installed windows directory instead of a
fake one. I tried to make it run using my installation of windows XP,
it started up fine and then died with an error that it can't write to
C:\Windows. Is it possible to make it run using a read only windows
directory but to write to a local one all its settings?

I’m letting myself join the question.
Since the new version academic library catalogues (aleph 500), has a problem

Anyone aware of a utility/program to convert hebrew text between the different
 codesets and representations?

In particular, I'm interested in changing mutlibyte Hebrew to and from HTML
 characters.
where:
... would be:
Mulitbye hebrew in hex (e0 is Alef, 2e is '.'):
e0e12e2e2efa
The same in HTML ("à" is Alef, '.' is '.'):

Re: New catalog of academic libraries and Hebrew

2004-06-11 Thread meorero

In the _Old_ version (Aleph 300) you can connect with Telnet shell.
With the _New_ version (Aleph 500) - no more Telnet. Only Web interface.
AFAIK - there are only three Universities left with the old version: the Technion,
HUJI, and Bar- Ilan.
For Bar Ilan - ("inside Info" …) the plan is to move to the new version within a few
months (by February 2005).
As for the HUJI (Hebrew University) and the Technion - I assume that there’s also a
plan to move to the New
system.
So we won’t have the Telnet way :-(
By the way - you can try access all web catalogs via:
http://libnet.ac.il/~libnet/malmad-israelnet.htm

Hi,

I reported this exact problem, with detail and screenshots, to the
library IT personnel at Haifa University and at the Weizmann Institute.
The former blatantly rejected it [1], while the latter passed it on to
Ex Libris, the makers of the software. I got no further response,
despite my followups. That was well over a year ago.

Please do report the problem to the people in charge of whatever Aleph
systems you're using.

New catalog of academic libraries and Hebrew

2004-06-11 Thread meorero
Hallo list members.
Need your advice

The problem:
Browsing the new on-line catalog of academic libraries of Israel (Aleph 500)
from non-IE browsers. I've started already a thread about that at Whatsup,
 [http://www.whatsup.org.il/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=13741]

The problem, in short, is that Hebrew letters appear at Mozilla and Konqueror as
English Capitals. Changing mozilla's UserAgent to simulate MSIE solves this,
but I thought: why should we change it?

While complaining to the company, maybe I can built a web page that will demonstrate
them how can this fixed...

Is there a way filtering their web-pages to be viewd in Mozilla, Konqueror (and all
browsers)??

for examle of how does this shown you can look here: (Hebrew On line catalog, Haiafa
University)
http://132.74.56.101/F/?func=file&file_name=find-b&con_lng=heb

Problems configuring NFS-server

2004-04-02 Thread meorero
Hallo friends and list members.

I have some problems configuring NFS-server.

Trying to mount the server I get this :
 $ mount_nfs   10.0.0.8:/usr/BSD/usr
mount_nfs: bad MNT RPC: RPC: Timed out

The client is OpenBSD3.4 (and that's the command).

Yes, I DO KNOW, this is a Linux list.
But I suspect the problem is at the NFS-server
which is to be on Debian (stable) .

(and I've reached here after a long discussion at
the BSD-il mailing list mainly with Gal Ben-Haim).

##-
   Some More Details:
## =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+

That's what I have in my /etc/hosts.allow file:
 portmap: 10.200.1.2/255.0.0.0 : allow
 lockd:10.200.1.2/255.0.0.0 : allow
 mountd:10.200.1.2/255.0.0.0: allow
 rquotad:10.200.1.2/255.0.0.0 : allow
 statd:10.200.1.2/255.0.0.0 : allow

That's what I have in my /etc/exports file:
  /usr/BSD 10.200.1.2(rw)

Now, that's what I get by running "rpcinfo -p" to the
server ip ("10.0.0.8") and to the client ip ("10.200.1.2"):

mydeb:~# rpcinfo -p 10.0.0.8
   program vers proto port
102 tcp111 portmapper
102 udp111 portmapper
1000241 udp 1024 status
1000241 tcp 1024 status
132 udp 2049 nfs
1000211 udp 1037 nlockmgr
1000213 udp 1037 nlockmgr
1000214 udp 1037 nlockmgr
151 udp 1038 mountd
151 tcp 1029 mountd
152 udp 1038 mountd
152 tcp 1029 mountd

mydeb:~# rpcinfo -p 10.200.1.2
   program vers proto port
102 tcp111 portmapper
102 udp111 portmapper

This output is the same by running from "rpcinfo -p" at client
The client is OpenBSD3.4 but I suspect that the problem
is at the server side (Debian, as I said).
Thay ar both at my home LAN (If this matters...)

Thanks for all who can help me to solve it...

[This maybe a little 'off topic', but still related, I guess:]

Products sold by “sii.org.il” are limiting:
They are compatible only for IE (version>=6) and only for Acrobat Reader >=5.0

I’m talking here about a CD entitled (Hebrew) as:
Israeli Standards – Structure Engineering (‘Handassath – Mivnim’)
My father brought it home to use it at his daily work two weeks ago.
I’ve e-mailed them and asked:
Why do they request using IE (and in particular version>=6) ?
There was no answer…
