WOW!
So linus is now a netvision user!!
I must say, mister Trovalds, that performing an oversees telephone call
(not to mention opening a local ISP account) just to send this one email
is an impresive step torwards the local LUGs you eavsdrop on. I am not
sure why you did not use one of your usual email addresses, but I'm sure
you have had your reasons.

Hi, I'm Linus Torvalds, I assume that most of you have heard my name before.

Because of my obvious interest in the success of Linux around the world,
I like to, once in a while, subscribe to mailing lists of various Linux user
groups and eavesdrop on the discussion. That gives me a nice warm feeling,
about my work on Linux really making a difference to real people out there.
A few months ago I subscribed to this list (IGLU), and I would like to
congratulate you on being one of the most interesting and lively LUGs that
I have seen in a long time. I've seen here people taking real interest in
Linux, people trying to help one another and form a close and friendly
community, people developing free software, and even a few aspiring (and
inspiring!) open-source ideologists. It is really heart-warming for me to
see this tight community, and I hope that the Middle East could soon
become more like this list, a fountain of creativity and brotherhood, and
less of what it is today, a fountain of tears and blood. I am looking forward
to visiting Israel someday (hopefully soon!) and meeting all you wonderful
folks in person.

Last but not least, I would like to thank you all for supporting my plea to
call our favorite system by a short catchy name, "Linux", instead of longer
and more cumbersome names. I read that one of the proponents of these long,
ugly, names visited Israel recently, and I was glad to see that he wasn't
able to convince you to lower the "Linux" flag. I believe that if we ever
want open-source software to succeed, we must all work together and fly one
flag, and I think the Linux banner is the one that is most likely to get the
attention of the media and of the people worldwide.
Continue with the good work you're all doing, and God bless.

   Linus.

The Linus I know barely has the time for lkml, much less his local LUG,
and I find it kind of odd he would use a webmail address rather than a
more conveniant one.

I am only left with a big question mark here, who IS this poster and
what does he really want? to troll the list, pull an April 1st, or (my
paranoid hat) harvest our Email addresses for spam?

Dear prankster,
Have a happy fool's day, enjoy your GNU/linux and think up a better
diguise :)

Come on, the spoof wasn't so bad. The timezone was correct, for
starters. Not being a spammer, the spoofer didn't disguise his
identity too much (he didn't add spoofed Received: headers, nor
even did he spoof the sender address), and made it quite obvious
that it was an April 1st joke.

The text *could* have been better, though.

Those who harvest e-mail addresses for spam don't tend to post.

That should give us some idea of the real prankster...

Call me paranoid, but asking to drop the GNU project out the window and then
pionting us to the platinum initiative?

Who is he really?...

Since when linus is a yahoo email user ?

According to http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/linus/index.html :

11. What is Linus's email address?

You can reach him at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This is probably another April 1st joke ...

Check the "From:" now (but don't check the "received" headers
or my signature below).

BTW. If you reply to this message it will REALLY go to Linus.

X-Mailer: Faked mailer 1.4.3 (send-msg 1.108)

You don't have to use this. Just replace the address on your normal mailer
or manually send a message to a mail server (using the protocol commands).

As I read linus use pine.

> BTW. If you reply to this message it will REALLY go to Linus.

That's why I replaced the To field.
