[LIH] Hoaxes or true ?

2001-04-22 Thread Bharat Ale

Hi all,

I heard that MS is going to make their own Linux distribution. Is it true or
a hoax ?

Also, I heard MS has 'bought' Java hence Visual Basic is fast going to
overcome Java. I wonder what that means.

I didn't get head or tail of these two news. Anyone can clear ?

Re: [LIH] Connection problem in pulse system

2001-04-03 Thread Bharat Ale

Well, here it goes -

We are trying to dial-up to an ISP from a remote location where the
telephone system is pulse dialing (I am told the switching system used is
C-DOT, whatever that means). Whereas on the city where the ISP is, the
system is dial tone.

I am first trying to connect from minicom and have failed to get a stable
connect.

Now when we dial (pulse dial) the modem most of the time does not detect
dial-tone, or when it does detect and dials, connection is not established
or if connection is established, I get the ISP login prompt rarely and most
of the time I get lot of garbages. I changed terminal settings and it
doesn't seem to help. When I do get login prompt and login successfuly
(rarely), the connection is lost or PPP doesn't start properly.

All these problem are present only from there. So I guess the problems may
be related to line quality.

Once, a technician told me that setting 'wait for dial tone' may help but
how do I do that ?
Also suggested was putting a sound-filter on the phone-line.

Also, I have tried ATX3 and XTX4 and ATX1 and ATX2 but not much help.

Any suggestion to improve connection is greatly appreciated.

Is there a diff between directly dialing using ATDP and setting ATDP in
config and saving it ?

I have dialed using ATDP but not saved the settings in config. It did dial
(and connect sometimes but unstable and the connection breaks soon).

Suresh and Raju, thanks for your kind help. Raju, I do need your help :-)

I am new to UUCP. I've read the docs I could lay my hands on (howtos,

dying.

We are using UUCP because as Suresh put, the lines are poor and connection
is intermittent.

Sorry if it is a dumb question but do I need a UUCP account with my ISP
where, through TCP, I can transfer mails from my users or can I do without
it ie can I simply forward it to my ISP like normal internet mails ?

Re: [LIH] errors in syslog

2000-04-04 Thread Bharat Ale

Hello all,

As according to PCQ, I've written scripts for DNS to use named.ca when
online and not use when offline. So when online, named has access to root
servers and not when offline.

Now the confusing part is when I see the /var/log/messages I see that when
online named starts and says

listening on [127.0.0.1] in lo
listening on [202.52.252.128] in ppp0

where the lower IP is my dynamic IP address.

Again as soon as I disconnect named restarts with new conf file and again it
is still listening on lo and ppp0. Why is this ? ppp0 is deactivated when I
disconnect but where is named getting my dynamic address from ? I think
that's why I'm getting 'sysquery: findns error (NXDOMAIN) on
ns.pucampus.edu?' error after I disconnect since there is no ppp0 active.

How do I correct this ? Above all, where is named getting my dynamic IP from

[LIH] Proxy server (Squid) not working

2000-03-25 Thread Bharat Ale

Hi,

I enabled IP forwarding (by pcqupdt March 99 CD) and configured squid
according to PCQ article (a transparent proxy with Squid by Nikhil Datta).

The problem is that the clients cannot access the internet when proxy server
is used (at port 3128).

They can access when proxy is not used but its slow (that's why I was
planning to use squid).

Is Nik on this list ? Maybe he or anyone can help me. Thanks.

BTW, I saw the following in /var/log/messages after I gave
/etc/rc.d/init.d/squid start (or is it due to starting more than one
instance of squid ? I see it doesn't stop me from doing so).

HTTP port could not be opened

If anybody knows what problems are there with pcqupdt script - please tell

[LIH] DNS for Dial-up

Hi,

I'm having problems in DNS in RHL 6.0

PCQ Mar 99 config shows that 'hints... named.ca' section should be removed

named.ca when online ?

And the other thing that I don't understand is how does Linux resolve names
when online because there's no DNS names of my ISP's DNS in resolve.conf or
named.conf. It has only my static IP address (192.168.0.1).

Shanu said DNS in RHL 6.0 is broken. What exactly is broken and how can I
fix it ? I don't have access to RHL 6.1.

[LIH] Best partioning

2000-03-20 Thread Bharat Ale

Hi again,

What might be the best partioning for serving 16 Win95 clients for internet
sharing and SAMBA ?

I'm getting the following error message (approx, don't know exact wordings
now) occassionaly, especially when network clients access the hard disk
(like du) -

ide0:reset DRQ error timed out
reset::success

What could be the problem ? Is the hard disk going out ?

Bharat

[LIH] DNS not working

2000-03-20 Thread Bharat Ale

Hello,

I'm trying to set up my RH Linux 6.0 server (from Chip, don't have PCQ Nov
CD :-( ). The DNS is not working no matter what I do. I thought maybe I
made some serious errors so I simply re-setup DNS by running Atul Chitnis
DNS server setup script (part of pcqupdt script) from February 99 CD (RHL
5.2). So now my DNS is setup as set by the script. Is the DNS setup of RHL
5.2 any different from RHL 6.0 ? And do I need to have different
arrangements when I'm offliline and when I'm online ? Basically what I'm
trying to do is set Linux box so that IP Masq allows the 16 Win95 machines
to share connection and send mails. Any advice and suggestion is really
apreciated.

Please don't flame.. I'm doing my homework - studying DNS-howtos etc but
still need more guidance

TIA

Bharat

PS: Thought I may install PCQ RHL 5.2 but it doesn't recognize Realtek
RTL8139 NIC. How do I go about installing the driver after I install Linux
without network ?

[LIH] Setting up Linux server for 1st time

2000-03-18 Thread Bharat Ale

Hi,

I have a 16 windows 95 clients. Currently running Wingate. Wingate server
192.168.0.1. Clients have 192.168.0.x static IP address. Peer to peer
network. Wasn't set-up by. The management is currently skeptical about my
Linux project so I don't want to change anything on the client side and
Wingate side so that it continues to boot and operate in Wingate environment
until I finish up configuring Linux and showing it off.

My plan : enable SAMBA, web server, internal email, internet email, proxy
server, internet connection sharing, demand dialling by tommorow.

Started today. Installed RHL 6.0 from Chip CD. NIC is Realtek 8139. Gave the
Linux server 192.168.0.1 so I don't have to fiddle with the client settings.
Configured SAMBA, working fine. Apache web server working fine. Now I wanted
internal email. Enabled POP3 and SMTP in inetd. In clients they were already
set to use 192.168.0.1 as POP3 and SMTP server at port 110 and 25 so no
change required. Opened user accounts in Linux. But send/receive from client
takes a lot of time. Sometimes it times out at 'connecting to 192.168.01'
and sometimes at 'Authrizing' and sometimes mails are sent/received after
taking a lot of time.

Haven't done any DNS setup till now. Is the trouble due to DNS server not
set ?

Any help is very much appreciated. I am hoping to finish off internal /
internet email and internet connection sharing / proxy by tommorow.

TIA

Bharat
