Hi,

thanks for your reply. I did what you suggested and although
ldconfig -v reports libjpeg.so.6 in the directories /opt/kde/lib/gnulibc1
and /usr/lib/gnulibc1 afterstep still reports that it can't locate the
library.

What does the line /opt/kde/lib/gnulibc1=libc5 mean?

Thanks,
Martin.

If you have enough physical memory, is normal that the swap is not
used.

Reboot your machine, when "LILO" is displayed type linux 1 or linux
single, this will bring you in single-user mode. At that point, you
are root. Use passwd to change the root password. Use init 3 or init 5
to hop into normal-user-mode.

There is some compilation problem in the redhat 6.x rpms from kde.org.
It cannot recognize oss or alsa sound drivers.
You need to download the kdesupport and kdelibs src.rpms to compile the
kdesupport, kdelibs, kdelibs-sound and arts rpms for yourself.
Then apply these newly generated rpms again.
I wish these can help people who face the same problem.
Thanks for the internet resource!

audio I/O. Actually other Linux sound application can produce sound
normally. I am using ES1371 with the 2.2.x kernel module as driver,
 which should be OSS/Free driver.
Can anyone tell me how to make artsd to find my audion I/O?
 Thank you very much!

I have compiled the 2.4.2 kernel and applied ppp-2.4.0 to for my RH6.1

But as I connect my linux box to internet with modem.
It said that ppp support is not included in my kernel or loaded as

As I try to modprobe ppp, ppp1 or ppp0, it said that ppp cannot be
found.
Then what I should include in kernel configuration to include ppp
support?
Thanks for your concern!

You're not typing the $ are you? You shouldn't, as it's just your
prompt. Try entering the following: 'which emacs' and it should tell
you the full directory path to emacs. If it shows nothing, then emacs
isn't installed.

How do I connect to an Internet Service Provider with KDE?

I assume it's KDE1 since you're using an old version of Red Hat. Look
on the K menu for something called "Internet Dialer" or Kppp - in KDE2
it's in Networking/Remote Access.

Run it and click the Setup button. Click New to add a new ISP account.
Enter the ISP's name and phone number. Leave the authentication method
set to PAP for now. On the DNS tab enter two domain name server IPs -
you can get these from your ISP; look on their website if you can't
find them any other way. On the IP tab make sure "Dynamic IP address"
is checked unless your ISP has given you a static IP address. Also make
sure that "Configure host name from this IP" is *not* checked. Click OK
to add this new account.

Click the Device tab and make sure that the Connection speed is set to
the next higher speed than your modem's speed. In other words, if it's
a 56K modem (or V.90) then select 115,200. If it's a 33K modem, select
57600. You might get away with leaving it at 115,200.

Click the Modem tab and turn your modem on if it's an external one. (If
it's internal there's an excellent chance that it won't work with Linux
and you'll have to get a new one.) Click the Query Modem button and
make sure you get a response. You might want to set the modem volume
while you're here so that you can hear it dialling out when you
connect. Click OK to shut the new account dialog and you're ready to go.

Click the Connect button and you should get connected to your ISP.
You'll get an error message if it doesn't work, or the Kppp window will
dock into the panel. You can now fire up Netscape Navigator to test
your connection. If you entered the correct DNS IPs earlier, you should
be able to get to your favourite websites.

I've tried to set up my IDE CD-Writer (LG 8042 CD-RW) according to
the CD-Writer HowTO and still have some problems making it work.
I've installed the ide-scsi driver as a module and prevented the regular

recognized by the scanbus command of cdrecord, but gives me a strange
warning about the CD capabilities:

I have problems getting traceroute to work on a machine I am setting
up to be moved to another location. At the moment, it is on a private
IP LAN going through an ip masquerading router:

apostrophe--hub---interloper
  |
 DSL

Interloper has no problem pinging www.yahoo.com. Neither does
apostrophe. However, interloper can traceroute to www.yahoo.com while
apostrophe can't. I figure I either have a problem with my firewall
script or the problem will go away when I move apostrophe to a network
where it will have a real world ip.

DNS isn't working right either.

These are my rules on apostrophe (which will change slightly when the
machine is moved):

#!/bin/sh
#
# firewall This script sets up firewall rules.

# Interface to Internet
EXTIF=eth0

# Internal network address. For stand-alone machines, delete this and
# all the "forward" rules.
  INTERNAL=10.

I have barely begun to get into this scripting business and wasn't even
aware for a while that that's how ipchains "runs"! I thought it was a
program that one installed, fed some rules to, and then forgot about.

It is! :)

When talking about ipchains, you need to keep in mind that its
actually 2 things:

1. ipchains - the firewall mechanism, which is already in the kernel.

2. ipchains - the program. This is what you run to fill in the data
that ipchains (the mechanism) uses to decide what to do with IP
   packets it received.

If you reboot your machine, the ipchains rules in the kernel that you
had entered is now gone, and you need to "refill" again. That's why
you would need a script to be run as part of your startup sequence, so
that it will "restore" the rules.

You could also try the program pmfirewall which will write out the
ipchains rules needed based on your answers to its questions.

Now with kernel 2.4.x, the kernel is getting a new firewall mechanism
called ... iptables! But, you don't have to throw away those ipchains
rules because the new ipchains program for 2.4 will translate the
ipchains rules into iptables rules.

Best of luck...

Steven

Kingsley Tart [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
What is the best Linux distribution for SCO compatibility?

You're going to have problems if you're hoping for direct compatibility
in the ways I think you might be. SCO is a System V-ish UNIX, while
Linux is more BSD-like in nature.

We have an application that has many shell scripts and binaries
 written for SCO.

Best results will come if you're able to recompile your binaries
under the Linux platform. Even so, you may have some porting to do. The
directory tree's a bit different for a start.

When we tried to extract it onto RedHat 6.0, to
start with we had problems with cpio not being able to read the
 archive file.

More likely: cpio doesn't know what to do with it.

Is there such thing as a "System 5 compatible" Linux? I'm told
that we want to be compatible with System 5.3 or 5.4 (if it exists).

You'll need to recompile your kernel to incorporate support for the file
systems you're using. At minimum, you should include: ext2, proc, msdos,
vfat and iso9660. For your SCO requirements, you'll need to choose between
xenix, sysv and coherent (or all three, if you want to go for the safe
side).

If it simply means downloading a few tools then great, though if
there's a distribution that has compatible tools straight out of the
box then that would be easier ...

In terms of binary compatibility, you might have some luck with ICBS.
I recall this being included in the Linux kernel source in the 1.2.x
series, however, it's definitely not in 2.0.x and 2.2.x. You'll need
to do some searching. Even then, I can't guarantee results.

Your best bet, if you really need this to work, will be to spend some
time with the source code to these binaries (if you can) and tinker
away with it for a little while.

You may also want to check out comp.os.sco.misc (quite a few of the
people on that newsgroup are slowly shifting across; they may have
good war stories to tell you). Best of luck.

i had a search on my harddisk, and found the following directories:

 /usr/lib/
   libpthreads.so

   libpthreads.so.1
   libpthreads.so.1.60.4

Try editing the configure script to use -lpthreads instead of -lpthread.

Who is it that will provide this "Linux Certification" for ? Sounds
like
a scam to me.

I'm considering forking out for Linux certification. I'm considering
the Red Hat program. I would like to work in a Linux based environment.

The thing is, everything I know is self taught, maybe not so good for a
resume. OTOH, I think maybe I could get work just through networking (the
people kind) without having to fork out copious amount of cash. I'm already
getting occasional phone calls from MCSE type wanting help on installation.

Any thoughts, biases, rants sincerely appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom Ed White

I downloaded all the RPMs for gnome (I have never installed it before,
but I have some versions of the libraries), and when I run rpm -Uvh * on
the directory, I get numerous messages about variosu packages such as
gimp, grip, control-panel, linuxconf, etc needing older versions (mostly
*.1) of gtk, gdk, and libglib. Will the upgrade break all these
packages? Should I install concurrent copies of all the libraries? Any
 advice?

 Thanks,

Unlike the previous posts, I use Triteal CDE and think it's much better
then KDE. Granted, CDE is a pain to setup, but it is vastly more
configurable than KDE (I've only used v. 1.
