I need your help
Hello I have installed a raid 1(mirror) partition. / => /dev/md0 /boot => /dev/hda1 and /dev/hdc1 (handmade mirror) Here is my problem: I have destroyed my Bootblock. Now I can´t access the root-Partition in order to make a new one. The only thing that I can reach is the kernel i had put in the ext2-Partition. I use SuSE-Linux 6.4 and the rescue-disks can´t read the md0 devices. So I thought that I can start the rescue-System, mount my /boot partition and build a new bootblock with lilo. But that does´t work. The message from lilo: "Sorry. Don´t know how to handle device 0x0102" This means, that lilo doesn´t know the md0-device, isn´t it? Does anybody know a sollution without installing everything new? Raid 1 Mirror (the second try)
Hello Because of my problems in sending mails yesterday here is my second mail once again. ---begin--- Hello again :o) > The old HOWTOs are up to date with the old code. But the old > code is _old_ (and buggy etc.) Yes, but they discribe that you must patch the 2.0.x kernel. And this needn´t be done with the actual 2.2.13 kernel. (If s.o. want to use the old system) But I have seen your name in the new RAID-HowTo, so no further questions about the old system :-) > > My question is now: shall I take the normal kernel-buildin RAID > > System (with the mdtools) or shall I patch my 2.2.13 kernel > > (SuSE-Linux Distribution) and use the new one (with the raidtools)? > Patch 2.2.15pre15 instead. It's more stable than 2.2.13. Uh. Is the 2.2.15pre15 a newer kernel or a patch? Where can I get it? > > The new one is much easier I think. > > Yep. Aha! You mean that I can take the 2.2.15pre15 kernel (because it is more stable) and use the 2.2.14 patch from RedHat. Is this right? What do you mean with reject in raid1.c? Is this a message which appears, when I patch the kernel? How can I fix by hand? Will I see, how it can be fixed? raid 1 mirror
Hello I have to install a RAID 1 System in order to mirror all partitions (exept the /boot partition, I think). The Problem is that I haven´t made this before, and I haven´t found a documentation that gives me the answers I need. There are three HowTos available the old (normal) RAID HowTo for RAID Systems in Kernel 2.0.x and 2.2.x, the Boot-RAID-HowTO and the new Raid-HowTo. The Old HowTos are from 1998 and I think they are not up-to-date, isn´t it? My question is now: shall I take the normal kernel-buildin RAID System (with the mdtools) or shall I patch my 2.2.13 kernel (SuSE-Linux Distribution) and use the new one (with the raidtools)? In the old Boot-HowTo there are lots of steps to make and I think that I will have problems in comprehending them. The new one is much easier I think. But is it really stable enough for a normal RAID 1 System with two IDE-Disks? There is a /boot Partition (now RAID) and a / , /home and /db-Partition on each Disk which I want to mirror. This Server will stay on a little airport and will keep an adabas database so the solution must be stable. When I shall use the new RAID-System: Which patch can I take? I have only seen the patch from Alan C. at ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/alan. (I have the SuSE-kernel 2.2.13) At ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/raid/alpha (I don´t know exactly the URL) there are only patches for 2.2.11 and below. I hope you can understand what I mean :-) and you can help me. Thanks, Andreas
