RE: ISDN modems need 16650 serial ports.

2000-04-12 Thread Andy Kennedy

Thanks for everyone's help. I did wonder about the Lava ($59 board). I'm
going to settle on the Blue Heat from Connect Tech Inc, as I've been looking
for a multi port card anyways.

Now maybe I can actually hit that deadline of Friday!

I'm now going to sign off the list. Thanks again for everyone's help!

Andy

Ooops, I just realized that I cannot find their English pages any more.
I sent the URL in the belief they had German and English pages. Sorry,
I should have checked before. :-|

Hmm. Why exactly do you 'need' a 16650? If all you
need are speeds above 115kbaud, or deeper buffers, you could theoretically go
with an entire fleet for boards. The LAVA boards www.lavalink.com come to mind if you'd like
something cheap and reliable.

No offense, we'd all love a few cyclades Z-seris
boards, but that's just not an option for some people. Read this
article:
http://www.lavalink.com/LIBRARY/Products/Lavaports/LPFAQS/FAQ_650_AND_ISDN.HTML
For ISDN, what's happening is that some serial
ports have very shallow buffers (usually the older 16550s) so everything's
tranferred a byte at a time, hence the slowdown in apparent speed.

Hope this helps,

Mike Hudson

Because of this, I need one.  Does anyone know a good serial card
that supports 16650 and is still being made?

The Cyclades-Ze is an intelligent multiport card based on 16C654 (quad
UART) chips (which basically are 4 16650 UARTs in one chip). More info
about the board at:

http://www.cyclades.com/z-series.html

However, the minimum number of ports provided by a Cyclades-Ze card is 16
(up to 64 ports per host card). So, if you only need one or two serial
ports, you may be better off looking for other solutions.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Ivan

Vision Systems (Norderstedt, Germany) have 16550 and 16750 boards, ISA
and PCI, one of those may fit. IIRC, http://www.visionsystems.de/ --
note they ship unregistered UPS parcels and UPS is obnoxious in respect
