Hi Steve,
This was the modem supplied by Xtra, arrived by courier yesterday brand

Yes, I did try wvdial in stupid mode, with the same result.

No i did not think of sending the log file to the wvdial developers, but
can soon arrange that.
many thanks for your help.

As a sub side to this issue, the person involved decided to move to xtra
broadband.
Installed the supplied dsl modem A Thompson speedtouch 510. Once the
modem had connected to the adsl and the telltale lights were correct,
plugged the machine in with no further issues.
The operating system is Ububtu hardy 8.04.

At present everything is working correctly.
Also this dsl modem works with Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10, on my HP Elitebook
8730, despite there being some network issues on this machine.
just a matter of general information for anyone who has helped me in
this matter.

many thanks for all your help

I believe that the problem stems from wvdial interpreting the second
"User:" prompt

In stupid mode, how do the username and password get sent?:

"When wvdial is in Stupid Mode, it does not attempt to interpret any
prompts from the terminal server. It starts pppd immediately after the
modem connects. Apparently there are ISP's that actually give you a
login prompt, but work only if you start PPP, rather than logging in.
Go figure. Stupid Mode is (naturally) disabled by default."

? maybe then need pppd chatscripts...

> Did you submit a log of the logins session to wvdial development?

No.

Did you try wvdialin stupid mode with this? I find it hard to believe
that wvdial doesn't work with something as trivial as this.

Did you submit a log of the logins session to wvdial development?

Re: Hardy 8.04 modem concerns

2009-02-27 Thread Eliot Blennerhassett
For the record, the solution I came up with for a friend was to use
KPPP which allows entry of a custom chat script.
This was worked out by connecting manually (i.e. using miniterm), and
seeing what the xtra server was expecting.

Xtra's login prompts confuse wvdial and thus gnome-ppp.

In Kppp setup choose Authentication: Script based
for the script

Expect ogin:
Send
Expect word:
Send
Expect ser:
Send ppp

Note that the password is in clear text, haven't looked for a way
around this. Appropriate permissions on the kppp config file will help
(I leave this as an exercise for the reader, i.e. I don't know where
it is)

Also note that this can probably be done with old style pppd and
chatscripts, but is even more arcane for a normal user.

Eliot

Sadly, none of the suggestions offered have worked, and after a day
discussing with Xtra, ( who continued with the party line)
my client simply changed isp's
end of issue.

I can't help but wonder how long it will take for xtra to wake up, or
how many customers they have to lose before they realise that many
people do not need/require or want broadband.

just my 70 year olds ramblings.

Thanks for all those who offered the knowledge and support

After looking at your log ... have you run:
 'sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf'
 yet?

If not do so, then edit /etc/wvdial.conf as root and insert the phone
numbers etc eg; 'sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf'

From memory there is an error like this created by 'root' being owner of:

..which 'user' needs write access to one/some of in order to complete
the login.

Not sure about pppd wanting to write - I've always has hassles connecting
to Xtra via dialup and more so in recent times.

Chris, try adding the following to your /etc/ppp/options, (some of the
negotiation timing defaults may be too short)

lock
noauth
defaultroute
ipcp-max-configure 65
ipcp-accept-local
ipcp-accept-remote
idle 600

..which 'user' needs write access to one/some of in order to complete

- That could prompt someone who remembers exactly what ppp wants to

The machine is an IBM p4 for what that is worth, with an ibm
motherboard.

This modem I also use on my laptop as ttyUSB0 and I have used it on
several ubuntu dual boot systems with out an issue.

I tried wvdial, with the same result.

All help gratefully received.

2009-02-23 Thread Andrew Errington
Well, it seems to be an external serial modem, so it ought to work.

Common problems are:

Modem not switched on
Modem not connected to PC
Modem not connected to phone line
Misidentifying the serial port (/dev/ttyS?)
Permissions on the serial port device
Mis-typing the ISP phone number, username, or password

These are the easy ones to detect and fix.

By the way, I used KPPP for modem trickery and it seemed to do the Right
Thing (but no good if you use Gnome).
