I got a gray box on the left. I have flash installed. It seems the
server needs something as well. Would that be Freshmeat's server?

Thanks Bruce, I use to work with spread sheet a lot, especially when I was
doing flight planning for ESSO resources (1980 - 86) in the mid and later the
high Arctic. Its amazing how things get lost when you stop working with
them. I used VisiCalc for generating aircraft usage reports on a Tandy model
IV (CPM) how things have changed:)

No way, I do not want to end up in hospital like a countryman of yours from a
stinger. He is critical and on life support in Townsville hospital after
swimming up north and getting hit by one of the stingers. He swam outside the
netted area, another died last week after doing the same.

Shawn Taylor is coming over very soon and going to the Gold Coast, they have
more sharks per 100mts there at the moment than sand on the beach, as they
are herding bait fish into the shallows. They are also accompanied by whales
and porpoises.

Blasphemy!

I tried Mozilla 0.9.9 and Konq as delivered with Caldera 3.1.1

Neither worked.

The info in the page implied that the server needed an XML file
that flash would in some way turn into a menu. What type of menu
I am not sure, as the page gave no clue and the demo did not
function.

It would be nice if it was a server-only thing. But I expect that
it requires client flash support. Easy, but not guaranteed,.

I dont want you to screw up first. I already added MIMEDefang, and
SpamAssassin and Razor into the mailserver running this list. I just didn't
keep notes. It's really not that hard though.

My previous procmail notes probably did assume too much knowledge. That's why

questions would force me to examine what knowledge I assumed.

mimeencode is used for mucking with mime attachments.

You should check spamassassin.org and read up on it's checks. it does a
wonderful job of parsing email headers and content. it might be little

Personally, i *hate* it. Flash is one of the most over-used 'features'
around these days, and i've yet to see a single good use for it.
Actually the only mildly good use is the stupid/silly animated movies
that some people make (All your base, etc).

Additionally, Flash requires a plugin, and the last thing we need is to
raise the bar on using the Steps.

Yes, its really neccesary. For starters, there is no rule that only
'adults' can submit new content to the SxS. Secondly, the SxS editors,
have in the past, received submissions which were blatant plagerism of
copyrighted material. The last thing the SxS needs is a copyright
infringement lawsuit because someone wanted a bit of fame by submitting
steps that were not their own. The agreement absolves the SxS of
responsibility should the submission be an illegal one.

What do you mean by 'save'? The -accept_all_cookies option allows it to
accept all cookies. -cookie_file=FILENAME lets you specify a file to
use to store cookies. All of this is from the man page for lynx.

Ximian/RedCarpet/SuSE 7.2 Question

2002-04-03 Thread T.J. Arrowsmith

I'm trying to run red carpet on a SuSe7.2 box. In order to be able to
install, you need to run as root. There's a bug in red carpet that prevents
a user from running red carpet as root from the menus on a SuSE 7.2 box.
The workaround is to open a terminal window, su, then run red carpet from
the command line. I tried that and got the following error message:

Xlib: Connectioin to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: client is not authorized to connect to server

Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0

Has anyone else seen this problem? If so, can you let me know how to fix
it?

Thanks.

I think you are talking about persistent cookies. First lynx has to have
that compiled in. I got it and compiled it, because simply setting things
in .lynx.cfg did not work. After compiling it with persistent cookies, it
saved them.

--enable-persistent-cookies flag is what must be used. You can read about
it in /usr/doc/lynx/lynx_help/Lynx_users_guide.html

This is what I have in ~/.lynx.cfg, but it only worked after I recompiled:
--
# COOKIE_FILE is the default file to store persistent downloaded cookies
# in, if Lynx was compiled with EXP_PERSISTENT_COOKIES. The cookie file
# can also be specified in .lynxrc or on the commandline.
COOKIE_FILE:~/.lynx_cookies

# PERSISTENT_COOKIES is tested only if Lynx was compiled with
# EXP_PERSISTENT_COOKIES. Use this flag to disable the feature.
PERSISTENT_COOKIES:TRUE
--
I also set dselect so that lynx was on hold so that a new version would not
be installed. If you use apt-get, you need to change lynx from 'install' to
'hold' in /etc/apt/selection.lst At least that is what I figured, since it
would replace it with a newer version when one comes out and I assume it
would put in the default without persistent-cookies.

like a file manager.. if java is the only way (that I know of., but Im no
great webmaster either) then I would't bother with it.

I had read the man page and was attempting to use:
lynx -accept_all_cookies -cookie_file=~/.cookies

But, after using this command and going to a website that should give me a
cookie, the size of my cookie file is still 0 bytes upon exiting lynx.

Yup, those would be what I was refering to.

The problem with all of this though is that I have no control over any of the
software on the machine (it's a solaris box at university) and they don't
allow us to add software to the machine.

Thus, unfortunately I am unable to rebuild lynx (just noticed that this
client also doesn't support https... yipes!). Do I really have to ssh into
my home system just to be able to use a semi-recent/decent copy of lynx?

Does anyone know if the print bug is fixed - that's the one that occured in
KDE 2.x and caused part of the last line to print on a page and then repeat
on the top of the next page. According to all the posts I saw it was a qt
problem.

Somewhere (maybe on SxS or check the install for the Caldera RPM of 2.x)
there was an order to do them in - qt, then libxml?, then something else,
then kdebase, and finally the rest.

Started DL the SRPMS & build them that way for my machine. I loaded my other
machine with ew 3.1.1 this last week and have big problems with kde2.2.1. Now I do
have xfce on it and somewhat working. Found I have a DCOP proplem for kde2.
Many apps from kde complain about DCOP & IPC or some such before they run. Some
do not run like ntrol. all apps have no title bar, even in xfce.

cheers

There is actually an SxS on that...

Sneakernet Step by Step
or How to Move Files Using Floppy Disks

Alan Jackson, [EMAIL PROTECTED], July 2001.

Yes, even in this day of networks, CDRW drives, zip drives, and more,
the lowly 3 1/4 inch floppy still has it's place. Everyone has one,
and it usually works! So how can you best make use of your floppy drives
when transferring files? Here are few tricks and tips...

- tar is your friend. tar will preserve a whole directory structure
painlessly, so take advantage of it.

- tar also had floppy-friendly options, like allowing a single file to span
multiple floppy disks.

Here is a process I came up with for transferring lots of files between
machines on floppies.

1. Create a list of files to be moved :

ls -als * > foo
edit foo, put an '=' in front of every file *not* to move.

du --total `grep -v = foo | awk '{print $10}'`
This will tell you how many kbytes of files you have selected
Expect about 1440 kb per floppy.

grep -v = foo | awk '{print $10}' > foo1
This will create a new file of the selected ones

Create a list of files that are newer than a particular file (I used this
after I had transferred a bunch of stuff, and then a week later needed to find
all the stuff that had changed and move it).

find . -newer files_5_26_2001_e ! -type d -fprint changed_files

and then to make a tarball,

tar -cMpvf /dev/fd0 --files-from changed_files

2. Create a tar file from a list of files :

tar -cMpzvf a_tarfile.gz --files-from foo1
This command also zips the tarfile to shrink it.

3. Copy a list of files to a set of floppies

tar -cMpvf /dev/fd0 --files-from foo1

or create a zipped tarball first, and copy that onto multiple floppies :

copy onto diskette
tar -cMvpf /dev/fd0 chunk_j.gz

4. Copy off a set of floppies onto a new system

copy off of diskette
tar -xMpf /dev/fd0

--

The tar options used are :

x = extract
c = create

M = multiple floppies
p = preserve times
v = verbose
f = filename (this parameter must be last)

Enjoy!

Agreed. An SxS is not a PhD thesis, but the principle remains the
same: plagiarism is claiming the work of someone else is your own.
Cite your sources if you copy someone else's work.

Of course. Nevertheless, the agreement protects us from copyright

xhost localhost

Then do whatever. This allows any local app (no matter who owns it) to write to your
X Session.
If you're concerned about this (like others can log into the box) run "xhost" with no
params and it empties out the access lists again.

Hi,

The whole src directory is ~340MB (excluding the old-i18n dir in it).
Ideal for dial-up users ;)

Good grief. I just just downloaded the source code for XFC 3.8.14,
which weighs in at a paltry 4.2 MB.

Geez, Zoran. I didn't mean to set you off. That was not my intent.
Needless to say, I didn't post my change without context. If you recall,
I was upset that I couldn't read email sourcing from certain mailers
because they were exploting a lacking in Outlook's UUencode
implementation.

I guess upon reflection that it wasn't all that interesting after all.

My apologies.

Oy vey... This is a can of academic worms. With that said, the definition of
plagiarism according to The Random House College Dictionary, Revised Edition, page
1014 is:

"1. The appropriation or imitation of the language, ideas, and thoughts of another
author, and the representation of them as one's original work. 2. something
appropriated and presented in this manner." The use of someone else's work without
credit given, is plagiarism. PLAGARISM is stealing."

My own thoughts pertaining to plagarism:

When in doubt, cite your source.

What type of writing do not require bibliographic citations? A few examples include
opinion papers, short story, poem, totally original works. In these you would not have
to give credit because there would be none, you are the source. If someone used your
paper, they would have to cite you.

But then again, what do I know...?... Kurt and David B. are better equipped than I am
at this sort of thing.

But then again, as someone else stated, none of us are writing a thesis to become a
Rocket Doctor.

Best

I agree. I've run m4 just once in 8 years of using sendmail. I've
always simply edited sendmail.cf directly. m4 mearly takes ANOTHER config
file and rewrites it into sendmail.cf in a different format. Yes,
sendmail.cf can be hard to read and figure out but it can be done! :-)
