Re: KDE 3.0 is out!
I'm running Mandrake 8.1 on the lab rat. Downloaded the KDE3 rpm binaries for man8.1 and did the install. I can run kde3 from the console (runlevel 3) How ever even though kde3 appears in the kdm login screen I still get KDE2. If ths was COL I would know where to set things up. Oddly the Mandrake rpm's set up KDE3 in /opt, whereas KDE2 is in /usr. I suppose I can always boot into run_level 3 and start KDE3. I just don't like things half done. where do I set up kdm to see KDE3? -- Ted Ozolins (VE7TVO) Westbank, B. KDE 3.0 - gentoo sweet gentoo
Ah the joys of waiting. All I have to do is emerge --clean rsync (to throw away any stale ebuilds) emerge kde-base/kde and portage takes care of the rest including a higher level of python, the appropriate qt, etc. python and qt and kdelibs are done (3 hours) - still chugging through the rest. gentoo has updated the kdm stuff so that you can run your choice of 2,2,2 or 3 after all is said and done. Mandrake shutdown/segmentation fault
Sorry if this has been covered. I have a K6/2-300 system which (finally) runs well, but on shutdown segfaults, with the message Bad EIP value. I have found references to this problem (http://www.mail-archive.com/cooker@linux-mandrake.com/msg45447.html)--but none to a solution. The problem seems to be that the operating system (here Mandrake, 8.1) recognizes the motherboard based on its BIOS as one that will allow a software shutdown--when in fact it is not. (It is an AT motherboard, but ATX features are included in the BIOS.) This is a guess, based on the fact that it does it when shutdown to halt, but not rebooted. It is also confirmed by others who have made the same guess. Mandrake offers a possible solution, as 8.1 allows installation of either a 2.2.19 or 2.4.8 (default) kernel. One of the comments about the problem said it happened with a 2.4.8 kernel, but not a 2.4.5 one, but as a quick test I installed Mandrake 7.0, and it does it too. I suspect I could fix this by editing the script it runs on shutdown, but so far I have not found what that is. Can anyone suggest where I look? No reference (in years) to any material, I just remember how to do it. Could you look around and find something that looks similar? YES Is it plagiarism? NO Why not, it looks and reads like someone else's material? Because in the case of a cook-book recipe like the above where certain steps are involved, must be accomplished in a certain order, they will _always_ look like someone else's cookbook recipe to do exactly the same thing, copied or not. So in this case, plagiarism would be difficult if not impossible to prove as long as the _exact_ same words, punctuation, mispellings, aren't used. Although the below is plagarised from the above (because I'm reading and rewording slightly), it would not convince a judge: 1. create a partition with fdisk 2. format the partition with mke2fs -j 3. create a mountpoint with mkdir 4. mount the filesystem with mount But is there another way to do it? No (at least not correctly). Have I been to court? No. But I have discussed this with legal counsel. Why? I write one book for one author. I write another book with some chapters that cover some of the same material for another author. Can I copy from one book to another? NO! By rewriting the same material, am I plagiarising myself? Perhaps. The two texts can read substantially the same, but cannot be identical. If any two paragraphs from the two books are exactly the same, I could be open to a lawsuit. A pattern of several paragraphs that are identically worded would almost certainly net me major problems. Fiction is a lot easier to prove plagiarism than technical writing. Or, as happened with a Javascript setup I had, the pulldown menus (it was a menubar along the top) did not pull down. Made me very sad. I told one person to just upgrade to a newer netscape. She did, and her banking stopped working because the bank only supported older versions of Netscape. Problem with kbuildsycoa
--- david@david:~> kbuildsycoca Error can't open database! --- A few days ago I noticed that I no longer appear to be able run kbuildsycoa... no matter how much I fiddle around in menu editor nothing will be updated in the menus. I've searched on google, looked for man pages, and also asked a few people if they had any ideas what might be wrong, but none of these resulted in a solution.
