Then, beginning in mid-1999, we entered the technology bubble whereby
several venture capitalists invested in MandrakeSoft. Their requirement
was that we would accelerate the development of the company while
leaving its management to an experienced staff of world-class managers.

Their BIG ERROR! World Class Managers are akin to Educational
Administrators. Neither have been in the trenches for over 20 years,
if ever. If they get rid of 'em they may be able to climb out of their
hole.

But therein lies the catch. Once the VC's own you, you can't get rid

As I read it (though I don't have it before me) they did get rid of their devils and
are well on the way out of the hole. Having just looked at Mandrake 9.0 from the
viewpoint of a newbie looking for a way to make computing affordable for more of the
community, I hope things go their way. Looks like a great distribution for the
techy-challenged.

They're not really doomed. I've been a member of the Mandrake Club for
about a year and a half. Mandrake has been singing this song for awhile. To
raise money to go after the market they went public with over the counter
stocks. Instead of selling the stocks they went the wallstreet route by
selling warants to purchase shares to the rich and greedy. About the same
time the . com market went south. The warrant holders finding that they
weren't going to double their money and might have to actually buy the stock
and hold it decided they wpould be good enough to sell us scruffy peasants
to buy portion of their unexecuted warrants at the same price they would pay
for them. Unfortunately, the scruffy peasants have enough smarts to realize
that the hay day of the . com is over and the stock on today's market isn't
worth what the warrant holders and speculators hoped it would be. So,
Mandrake is still pushing to bail ouyt the ricjh and greedy instead of
raising money for expansion. If they need the money all they have to do,is
make the warrant holders execute their warrants when they are due. As far as
the company itseld six months ago they got a two year contract from the
French Government to replace the OS from the evil empire with on 240,000
government computers. That is quite a chunk of change even if it is in French
Francs.

It sounds like they made a big bet and lost. It just shows how hard it
is to make money with linux. The great virtue of linux is that it saves
money for users, but, by the same token, it doesn't put money into the
pockets of linux software firms. At least not on the desktop.

It is also a reminder of how small the linux world is. Four million dollars
would save the day? Compare that to the cash flow of Microsoft.

More like they got managers who didn't have a clue - they expanded expenses
drastically and the revenue wasn't there. The VC people brought in
profesional managers who don't have a clue except how to maximize their
