Re: gphoto install

2002-06-10 Thread Matthew Carpenter

No. I know that on the Mustek MDC800 camera, you (can?) use gphoto, set
it up as a MDC800 (or MDC8000) camera, and for the path, use
/dev/usb/mdc800
I know this works. I am not aware whether this camera can be mounted and
accessed like a disk. But the point is, this camera is a
serial-like-camera, regardless of whether you use a Standard Serial port
or a Universal Serial Bus.

I was able to mount a Sony Camcorder (also with memory stick) as a SCSI
device. Was totally amazed. It will also stream video over the USB but I
would assume that would take some software in addition.

I can't do much yet, as I've got a reinstall scheduled for tonight (I
really want to try Gentoo 1.2, as 1.1a failed for

My smart media reader is made by Dazzle. I'll let everyone know when

I have a Olumpas C-3020Z camera, and a smartmedia reader by PNY. Both
installed well when I installed suse 8.0, and both are USB. Both work great.
As for editing, I don't use gPhoto, but I use Compupic from Photodex. They
have a free Linux trial version, and for basic manipulation, it works great.
For more detailed work, I use Gimp.

Hope that helps some. Let me know if there are other specifics you need me to
find out. Sorry I am such an old fart newbie. (Brain don't work so well

Now I am FAR from being able to be of much help yet, but I am willing to check
certain parameters for you if you wish.

I do know they both use a DOS filesystem, and use the device /dev/sda1 for
the reader, and /dev/sdb1 for the camera. (These can be any port you
choose). The mountpoints were assigned /dos/E and /dos/F.

The reader is a USB 2.0 device, but it was given /dev/sda. Too bad

I think that if you have a smartcard reader, then they are definitely SCSI
(again, from what i've read). You should, however, also be able to plug
the camera directly into the PC with the USB cable, and mount the device.

This was the thing I used before. I see on the hardware page they say

One of the glitches was that it deleted all the images from the camera

I wish that were the case here. The Nikon 990 (and a bunch of other cameras

At least last time I checked. One needed to use a user-land lib to
manipulate the USB, and then play the protocol over this interface.

Re: gphoto install

2002-06-07 Thread Matthew Carpenter

I have little USB camera experience, but when setting up my dad's MDC8000
for him, it was as simple as plugging it in and telling gphoto what and
where is was (/dev/usb/mdc8000), which was exactly like what I did for the
serial-connection.

Its a fscking text file, its not going to do anything. You *read*
INSTALL, you don't execute it. Did you bother reading the aptly named
README, which instructs you to then read the INSTALL??

Whaa?? I've never seen any instructions for any package anywhere that
suggested running a "install-sh". Once again, RTFM.

I got the source from a downloaded tarball. Am running Mandrake 8.0.
Not too familar with the commands to install a tarball once untarred.
Only success i"ve had in the past was find the INSTALL or /install-sh
package and use ./install-sh -s. Butb that keeps failing because no
input source is specified.

Tried Lonnie's ./configure
 make
 make install
After cd to gphoto2-2.0 and that doesn't work either.

Re: gphoto install

2002-06-07 Thread Roger Oberholtzer

Now I need to see if gphoto2 is finally supporting a Nikon CoolPix 990
over the USB. Last I checked it was iffy at best. It does not appear as
a disk. Instead, there is a command set to control it. There are libs,
but I think the USB stuff was not too good last time I tried. I just will
say 'no' to running 'INSTALL'.

Re: gphoto install

2002-06-06 Thread Net Llama!

I'm not at all sure what you're doing wrong, but its got to be huge.

I just downloaded the gphoto tarball, and read INSTALL without a hitch.
There is no mention *anywhere* of a 'install-sh' file. You build gphoto
like most other software:
./configure
make
make install

so where did you get the idea that you were supposed to run install-sh??

Re: gphoto install

You're right, except that the INSTALL file can't be accessed even to
read. ./install-sh is apparently the install file, but when I give the
command line ./install-sh or ./install-sh -s I get a no input file
specified error. Just got to the point where I have been able to untar
and install some tarballs using the ./install-sh -s command, but it
looks I'm missing something in the command for an input file.

I'm not 100% on this but I think, from his last email, that the file

There is an INSTALL file there. But, I went back and looked at the
untarred list and found /gphoto2-2.0/install-sh which is the install
file. After changing the directory to /gphoto2-2.0 I tried to run it
with ./install-sh -s and get a no input file error message. I hgaven't
been running tar.gz files long and I keep running into this no input
error.
