OT Response of BT to my message...

2002-02-13 Thread Zoran

... about their legal action in the US.

The context of their reply is my mail in which I asked for a reduction on
an average use of hyper links of 25 clicks p/day. Not more as I was
expecting to be eligible for back payments in case they would win their
case.

Their reply is nothing more and nothing less than I expected although I
had a secret wish they would tell me something I didn't know.

In all I have an impression it is again a bunch of sharks trying to make a
good impression on their employer and make him believe the money he is
paying them is not lost.

Anyway, back to Linux...

Cheers,
Zoran.

Dear Mr Grbic,

Thank you for your email regarding BT and the legal action being taken on
Hyperlink technology.

You may find the following information useful.

BT owns a US patent (no.4,873,662) relating to the principles behind hyperlinks,
a concept widely used in the Internet and similar environments, including some
corporate intranets.

In the 1970s we did pioneering research development work on the convergence of
telecommunications and computing. This gave rise to a BT invention which is now
used in Internet hyperlinks.

We are taking legal action against Prodigy, and have approached other American
Internet Service Providers to discuss a reasonable royalty based on the revenues
that others enjoy by benefiting from our intellectual property.

We have approached ISPs as it would clearly be impractical to agree a license
with every user of the Internet in the USA, and individual users of ISPs can
effectively be covered by their ISPs taking licenses. It would make no sense to
pursue every individual who uses the Internet.

We can confirm that only the US is affected, as that is the only territory in
which the patent applies. There is no effect in Europe or elsewhere. This is a
straightforward business matter and intellectual property issues are commonplace
in high tech industries.

Thank you for taking the time to contact BT on this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Chrissie Kemp

- am I overlooking something?
-
- In case it's not supported why does the install create /dev/lvm and
- install lvm?
-
-modprobe lvm-mod

*** Ah yes, that was exactly the reason why I decided to share this with
the list. Modprobe gives obviously

modprobe: Can't locate module lvm-mod

because it doesn't exist. See above.

-Then you have a short sequence of ??create (pvcreate, lvcreate, vgcreate)
-sequences to stumble through. Then you need to run vgchange. Finally,
-you should be able to mount your vg. Notes: if you're going to stripe

*** Well, that's what I thought too but when vgscan gave me

vgscan -- LVM driver/module not loaded?

I started looking a bit deeper and came to the conclusion that the rpm
package kernel doesn't provide this. It's in the kernel but you still have
to recompile it!?

Since the issue is to install this by only using the stuff you get from
Red Hat I havent't tried to patch or recompile anything.

What puzzles me is that even upgrading the kernel from a rpm package
doesn't change this. The module is not in the 2.4.2-2, 2.4.7-10 or
2.4.9-21...

What are you using, SuSE?

View automaticaly an URL in Opera from Pine

2001-12-20 Thread Zoran

Hello All,

I've been away for some time suffering with W2k out of no reason at all
if not because I seem to have masochistic tendencies... :-)

Being late on a lot of things I started going through my setup(s)
and noticed there's no talk about using Opera as the URL viewer from, in
my case, Pine. What I had and which worked OK was a script to launch
Netscape if one would hit enter on a URL. Netscape being on its way out
I've been trying to make Opera do the same thing.

It doesn't approach the complexity of Douglas' Netscape script which
would e.g. test if Netscape is running or not.

I haven't tested yet if Opera is more intelligent than Netscape and if it
needs to know that it's running. At this point in time it looks like it
doesn't need to as it opens the URL in a new window within the running
instance. Much simpler than Netscape.

For Pine go to the setup screen - M, S, C, - and keep the Page
Down key pressed until you hit the bottom. The default command you see
will try to launch htmlviewer which than will, most probably, try to use
Konquerer.

To change this hit ENTER and type the following command:

/usr/bin/opera -newwindow _URL_

Hit ENTER again, E, Y to save and try to open an URL directly from a
message by highlighting it, Ctrl + F to go forward and Ctrl + B to go
backward. The URL will open in a new window within the running instance
of Opera, otherwise it will launch Opera and do the same.

There's a bummer if Opera is not running yet. It will start OK and go to
your URL but it will occupy the viewer within Pine until you close Opera.
This doesn't happen if you have an instance already running.

At this point in time I haven't played enough with the various options of
Opera to see if it can be circumvented.

In case anybody has been there please share your experience as it might be
an useful SxS.

Cheers,
Zoran.

On Nov 30 Net Llama was heard saying:

-What kind of a CD are you trying to burn (ISO, hybrid, music etc)?
-Also, what's the full command that you're issuing?
-Where did you get the kernel that you're using?

*** Too bad for the netiquette but I found the answer... grrmpf

It's an user mistake (mine) greately helped by the not so user friendly
way xcdrost works. In fact, I setup xcdroast to burn TAO (track at once)
instead of DAO (disc at once). Clicked on OK without doing so on the Save
Configuration button. It obviousely didn't save the config. Closed
Xcdroast and didn't notice yesterday it was burning systematically with
the -dao option.

Saw it when I did a tail on the logs... :-\

Cheers,
Zoran.

-
-Zoran,
-it may be that cdrecord wants to tell you that you tried to write a CD in dao
-mode (disk at once) and that this is not supported by your drive (or that
-cdrecord thinks so). At leat I got that very message by attempting to do so
-(I own a yet older Traxxdata writer).

*** Yep, found that out when tailing the log... (see other message)

Thanks!

*** I can confirm that.

I went to the Windows nest here in Paris (Surcouf, Ave. Daumesnil for the

The small Linux counter, which shares the wall with the M'$oft booth,
offers SuSE Pro for 492Ffr which is 75 US $.

Still, there were so many people populating the Windows booth one couldn't
get to the counter. All those pickled youngsters, dressed up women and
sharp looking young professionals being so proud to belong to the elected
few... reminded me of sheep. So much as a matter of fact I instantly had
the urge to imitate one very loudly. It's a pity I didn't have a recording
device to film the looks on all those faces...
