Joel I missed the original message, but I agree with Joel in that I have been running an Athlon 1.2 for 8 weeks in a dual boot situation without any problems and a vanilla WS 3.1 install. Hi Skip. I'm now up and running after building a new system this weekend. Thanks for the inputs, all. Thunderbird 1400MHz on an SiS 735 chipset (ECS K7S5A) mainboard, 266MHz front side bus and 512Mb DDRAM. I did throw in a GeForce 2 video card, but Linux balked, so I went back to my trusty TNT2 Ultra 32 AGP card. I'm running Suse 7.2 Pro and this thing flies! It's hard to concentrate on the screen with all this wind in my hair g. -- burns ___ http://linux.nf -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives, Subscribe, Unsubscribe, Digest, Etc -http://linux.nf/mailman/listinfo/linux-users

Thanks to those who replied. Here's an update FWIW: I did a fresh format, a fresh partition and a fresh drive even. In fact I laboious emoved, replaced, or reconfigured the entire system component by component, with my system in pieces scattered all over the floor. . By process of elimination, I have narrowed it down to either a corrupt bios, faulty motherbopard, or one of the two cpu's is toats, I suspect a combination of the latter two... perhaps not suprising as this was an overclocked system - even though I have a fairly sophisticated cooling system. Normally the CPUs run consistently between 32-40C. However, it may have been the recent summer heat wave 2 weeks @ 100F+) that, in the end, did me in. Symptoms: - GPFs and stack dumps when attempting to load windows, even from a cd boot. - numerous cpu/apic errors in Linux (although this is not unusual in the 2.4.* kernel, even with the noapic option in lilo. However the huge number of errors indicated that underlying process handling was abnormal). - lack of stability. The system kept losing ide and pci components and their resouce allocations (e.g. my cdrom and NIC) In the end, I suspect this fault(s) have been building for some time. As usual it is never one thing. I have also had a faulty CDROM drive to contend with which made diagnosis more difficult. I have reset all the bios settings back to bare defaults and declocked the processors. Linux now works without errors (and will talk to my NIC), although Windows still cashes during setup (just goes to show which is the most robust underlying OS - if there was any doubt). I can limp along this way, but I suspect the real answer is to invest in a new mainboard, which also means a new cpu as the board is a BX chipset and will only take a 466Mhz processor at the most. Have anyone heard of any issues with Linux running AMD processors... specifically the Thunderbird? Keith? I believe you have some experience in this area? -- burns ___ http://linux.nf -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives, Subscribe, Unsubscribe, Digest, Etc -http://linux.nf/mailman/listinfo/linux-users

I'm running on an Athlon 800 right now No problems with the install... did one last night. But FYI, my first install was on a K-233 (K5?) and it had problems with APIC and I had to use a parm (even to boot the install diskette) on SuSE 7.2 of: noapicnoapm (also had problems with the pwr mgmt..) Once I got by that, it installed fine. -- ++ + Bruce S. See my update in the main thread on this subject. It came down to a toasted mainboard and cpu. I am just on my way out to spring some do$h for a Thunderbird 1400 and board. sigh It won't be smp, but it will be a faster (and more stable) system in the end. -- burns ___ http://linux.nf -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives, Subscribe, Unsubscribe, Digest, Etc -http://linux.nf/mailman/listinfo/linux-users

On Sat, 1 Sep 2001 11:52:01 -0400 Hello burns from Lourens: I am running a 1.2GHz 266MHz FSB T-Bird here and it works like a charm. I have had no problems with the Asus A7V133 or the AOpen AK73Pro mobos. I did have issues with a DFI AK75-EC. It would run the standard install just fine but for the life of me, I could not get it to run an Athlon optimized kernel (?). On Sat, 1 Sep 2001 13:26:01 -0400 Hello burns from Lourens: Drool. Saw an interesting test the other day at: http://www.hardocp.com/reviews/cooling/roundup0501/index5.html Take a look at the temp differences achieved by putting a 7k fan on top of the boxed AMD cooler unit. (AMD Stock Cooler; Stock Fan - 142ºF; 7K Fan - 123ºF) They also have some interesting figures for high performance coolers. Enjoy. [large snip] It came down to a toasted mainboard and cpu.
