Once this works, I would recommend checking out gtknw (fm:gtknw). It's
still REALLY early (like v0.1) but it does add a little value if you're not
familiar with the ncpmount parms.

Have you activated the ipx daemon? I use the stock nwclient regularly and
this is what I most often forget. Also, IPX must be compiled in the kernel,

Re: netware client

2001-08-01 Thread Jason Joines

I use the NCPFS package from SuSE 7.1 and it works great. It
supports both bindery and NDS as well as IPX and IP. Just install the
RPM and issue the ncpmount command.

ncpmount -A "servers DNS name" -S "servers logical name" -U "username"
-P "password" "mountpoint"

If you don't specify the -A option, IPX is used. If -A is
specified, UDP is used. For NDS, the username has to be a full NDS
username like "johnj.finance.bus.internet". If you don't specify -P
you will be prompted for the password. I just put it in a script that
mounts all the servers I use from our Netware 5.1 NDS tree over UDP.

RE: netware client

2001-08-01 Thread T.J. Arrowsmith

If all you're looking for is bindery support, take a look at the NCPFS stuff
on novell's site, and also on RedHat's site (there's a link to RH from the
Novell site).

My experience with it is that is was a pain to set up (note that I was VERY
new to linux at the time and had no other relevant experience to rely upon
for this), but once it was up, it worked fine. Never had any major issues
with it once it was up.

There are quite a few bugs in the nwclient that is
shipped with
eDesktop. Unfortunatly development on the client has been stopped so
those bugs have not been fixed, nor are the going to be fixed in the
near future. The problems you are describing are the same as the
problems caused by those bugs.
>Aren't these the same folks who dropped retail sales without warning and

With the nkfs module, the reason you are getting those unresolved
symbol errors is because that module was compiled for the original
kernel and the nkfs module was not included with the updated kernel.
To get the nkfs module working again you will have to recompile it
for the new kernel. Here is where you can grab the source to
recompile it:
ftp://ftp.caldera.com/pub/opensource/nkfs/nkfs-4.2.1.tgz
just untar and uncompress it then read the readme and other
documentation for compiling it.
At 06/13/2001 03:16 PM we wrote -
Is /usr/lib/modules/nkfs.o the place where you copied the newly
compiled module? Make sure you know the full path to the module. You
could even load it from the source directory if you can find there
where it put the nkfs.o file.
Also you could copy the nkfs file to the
/lib/modules//fs/ directory then run 'depmod -a'.
After that you could try:
modprobe nkfs
and see if the module will load.
While the module for the kernel is opensourced  the nwclient is
not.
The nwclient for Linux is still owned by novell but they have not
said what their plans for it are. You best bet is to contact Novell
and ask them what their plan is, becaues we don't know.
At 06/19/2001 01:21 PM we wrote -
It looks as though it is trying to open a device that the nwamd
needs to run. You can add the this entry to your /dev/ directory:
mknod /dev/nkfsd c 254 0
You have to add this as root. Also Please note that this is beyond

Description:
I have been having a terrible time getting my NetWare client to work
on
eD2.4. I am in a large NetWare 4.11 network. The interface seems
pretty
intuitive, but when I log in, perhaps I'll get to access volumes for
a while,
perhaps not, but it always (sooner rather than later) ends up not
letting me
access the Novell volumes and my logs go berzerk. I'm sticking with
eD even
when Sybil comes out because Sybil lacks Novell connectivity. The
NetWare
client is what attracted me to Caldera a couple years ago. Could
you please
help me?

Special characteristics of our network over which I have no control
are as
follows (will change with NetWare 5.1 rollout later in the year or
early next
year):
27 different partitions in our tree.
HUGE amounts of SAPs are propagated though the tree as well.

Thank you very much,
Matthew Carpenter

ps. Is there a way to get the NWClient for Sybil? I'd be willing
to build
it and RPM it if you still keep it and support it.

pps. Is there a reason that an eD2.4 box with the latest
Caldera-provided
kernel and glib's wouldn't work with the NWClient? I get the

The GTK client is kinda cool... It's not done, but it's cool. And
evidently the recent NCPFS has IP support as well... Hmmm... Worth

Have you tried installing the client on any distro besides one from caldera?
I've switched to SuSE 7.2 PRO and am getting ready to try it out - thought

Note, however that the nkfs module that comes with that version of the
client has a debug flag set in the source code, which results in giant log
files. I think I still have a copy of the source with the debug flag set to
off if you want it (another member of the list sent it to me a while back).

It turnes out that NCPFS does support IP. The version that comes
with SuSE 7.1 which is 2.2.0.18-5 does anyway. You just specify the
DNS Name or IP Address on the command line after -A and it uses UDP
instead of IPX.

ncpmount -A osu-fs05.cis.okstate.edu -S OSU-FS05 -U
joines.cis.evp.Okstate /osu-fs05

My apologies - the ncpfs & ipxutils are IPX only AFAICT. I poked around
Freshmeat and Sourceforge a bit but didn't find and IP/NDS clients. They
would be nice to have though.

I thought that Caldera's client did this... Is that not the case?

Well, Novell's stance on this is that they are moving away from Mac and
Unix clients for NetWare in favor of their new initiative of Native File
Access. Effectively, this is going to mean that NetWare boxes are going to
allow SMB access to their fileservers. This is great for those of us who
use Samba and know it's strength in Unix, but it's depressing for those who
understand F&P sharing using IPX vs SMB over TCP/IP. IPX had its problems,
but it has always been lightning fast compared to it's SMB brother, at
least when compared to an NT server. I haven't compared Linux to NetWare
yet. We'll have to see how this turns out.
