Even allies disagree on certain points.

If such quibbling enhances the knowledge of the person being abused, more
power to such quibbling.
I disagree with some elitists on this list who believe any newbie question
should be answered with hostility, and believe that there's nothing better
than keeping GNU/Linux being a hobbyist operating system, hostile to people
who are new and want to find out more, abuse distributions which make
GNU/Linux more accessible to newbies, but just being part of the same
community doesn't force me to stop trying to change their mind.I would like
to quibble on these issues, but I don't fancy being called names on public
lists, and therefore stay out of the flamewars related to these issues and
these elitists.

Distros don't differ much on account of hardware compatibility because they
use the same kernel, what may differ is the version of the kernel and any of

Actually,in a conversation with a game programmer,I found out that it isn't
as simple as rendering a white pixel needs rendering of all colours while
rendering a black pixel needs an absence of colours, thus power is saved.Even
the black pixel rendered is not true absence of colour but actually a mix of
the dark colours which is close enough to black for the human eye. So,power
saved is basically nil.

The installfest is at Ramrao Adik Inst. of Tech.,Nerul,3rd Oct,4:00 pm to
5:00 pm.It's a given that List members can make Ubuntu 8.04 CDs,which I can
do myself too because,as mentioned,I do have 28 CDs,the preferable thing is
that the CDs were from ShipIt.

Why we need the CDs is because most of the student of our college are day
scholars and don't own laptops, and I'm skeptical that people would lug their
desktop PCs to Nerul.

[ILUG-BOM] A request for Ubuntu 8.04/8.04.1 CDs

2008-09-26 Thread Easwar Hariharan
Hello List,
A few meetings ago,I had mentioned my plans for holding an presentation on
linux which turned into an install fest after consultation with LUG
members.the present situation is that the installfest is scheduled on 3rd of
October and the likely number of participants at the installfest is turning
out to be potentially more than the CDs I have available, which is 28.

ShipIt would take too long a time to send the CDs,therefore, list members who
have an excess of Ubuntu 8.04/8.04.1 CDs,preferably received from
ShipIt,because they will be in the "official" (:P) covers, could you help out
and contribute the excess CDs in your posession for the installfest?

Good idea, but we need more advocates and less gurus(read:people who ignore

Well,I never expected those users to close their accounts and stop trading
shares to switch to FOSS.I agree with you that as techies,we have to provide
the golden mean, but the point is based on a notion that I(or we,in case you
are generalising) expected them to give up their accounts and trading so
that they could switch to FOSS(mistaken notion,I might add)

Well, what you said about supporting and informing users about the ineptness
constitutes of a Hall of Fame.Assuming that Mozilla actually does intervene
in the case of broken websites, that intervention goes directly to the web
developer and he's seized of the problem.

Perhaps a browser that can put up with their crap as well

Probably because, then the user won't care, since he can do his work and not
care about standards, openness or anything. If they don't work,he *might* ,at
the minimum, use Firefox's Report Broken Website dialog to inform Mozilla, and
we can thus reduce the number of IE-only sites out there.

Don't worry,I'm using BEST's own site for the bus numbers.I'm coming from
Mulund. It seems a 496 Ltd with a changeover at Bhandup Station to 422 will
do the job to get to National College.

This was already in the agenda, only it was drowned out with only occasional
reminders by myself.Actually,it was a byproduct of Nagarjuna Sir's thoughts
at the last meet that, since the problems being solved by the GLUG on the
list are no longer of the form like "Sound is not working","X won't accept
max refresh rate",etc ,it shows that GNU/Linux is mature enough to be go out
of the hobbyist domain. It already has,for that matter.

Whatever, the main issue is that Sir was saying that the GLUG should now be
more involved in spreading the philosophy and culture of GNU/Linux.

a venue which is easily reachable by majority considering megablocks and

We can't count on the number being small, the Murphy's law will come into
effect. When you expect lots of people, very few do come in,while when there's

That means we could, potentially, contribute to freemap with GPS enabled cell
phones if we had a way to *record* the position(and co-ordinates)of
landmarks like the device which will be distributed does. So,if we don't want
progress on freemap to be restricted by the number of devices[I'm going to
call this device MuktTrack] available,we need a software which can be
installed on cell phones and records co-ordinates,eh?Then we get the output
of that software and convert it to gpx by either this script or
gpsbabel,whichever is applicable.Comments please.

It will, look to this aggregation of links.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=368607

Actually,it supports both,so it would be incorrect to say it's not
completely 64-bit.It works in 64-bit when you run a 64-bit OS.

I'm myself eagerly awaiting the release of 8.04 so that I can change to
64-bit(Pentium D 2.80 GHz).Performance wise,there will be a slight (maybe
quite noticeable) increase in speed.Plus,it can address more than 4 GB of
RAM,yes If I Remember Correctly,that was the figure.Check out the link,it
makes the perfect case for switching.

I guess this is the relevant link:

http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL9SH

Basically, your processor supports 64 bit operation thanks to the EM64T
technology.It's not completely 64 bit,rather it supports both 32 bit and 64
bit operation. You can use Ubuntu 64 bit provided the rest of your hardware
works which you can check out with the Live CD.Which I believe is completely
unnecessary for ME to tell YOU. *smiley*

You didn't get it,Kenneth is differentiating between GNU which is the
Application layer and Linux which is the kernel, but now let's not get into
flamewar territory.

I got only one entry:
