The only interest of the IBM is that it his the grandaddy of your
actual PCs. Nothing changed from this time for the PC technology.

The inclusion of a working
hard disk seems to add value to the unit.

My AT have a working 32 Mb drive, 3 Mb of RAM and an EGA card/monitor.

Lisa owners know about how vital
a working vintage hard disk is!

Yes !

Does anyone have experience with 80186 machines? That was the black
sheep

of the family, like Motorolla's 68010. ;)
Yes, I have a French computer, a Goupil G4, I think none of you had
ever heard about ;). It have a 8 Mhz 80186, a working 5 Mb Hard Drive.
This computer was the faster PC at the time it was launched. It was
also more expensive than the IBM at the same time ;) because
essentially built for french administration.
An impressive system that actually run Microsoft Windows 1.0 (yes, it
does !). I cannot compare to LisaOS, as my Lisa run only MacOs.

Re: PC Crap

2006-02-24 Thread sauersr
There's really no reason to get angry about this either way. One man's
refuse is another's treasure, especially when it comes to computer
equipment. None of my friends understands how I can be enthusiastic about
old computer technology, such as the Lisa OS and hardware. But, they can
talk endlessly about the most boring (to me) linguistic topics, like
cases, and one of them finds the Cincinnati local news channel fascinating
enough to watch twice daily.

The IBM AT doesn't interest me a great deal because of its primitive OS
and bland hardware. But, it is interesting from a historical perspective,
because it was so successful in the market. The inclusion of a working
hard disk seems to add value to the unit. Lisa owners know about how vital

of the family, like Motorolla's 68010. ;)

As for the Lisa's failure in the market, that's undeniable. But, market
success doesn't say a lot about the quality of products, sometimes, or
perhaps often. Although psychological research has found that people find
averaged faces more attractive (the more average the face, the more
attractive we find it), average technology is usually nothing to get
excited about. Unless, perhaps, you're Dell. ;)

right. And where do you get all those PCs and ATs.
You're really very ignorant of the value of those
things. And from the sound of it, ignorant in general.
And keep in mind, if it weren't for all that "crap",
your expensive Apples wouldn't be priced even as low
as they are.
The problem probably is you never figured out how to
use some of that "pc crap" and you're bitter lol.

I didn't realize this was a clearing house for old PC junk. And I thought
there were newsgroups for Apple bashing. As for all that PC junk...at least
once a month I throw IBM PCs and ATs into the dumpster at the

Re: Free IBM AT

2006-02-24 Thread J Worgan
Take heart, Thomas Edison knew that the best way to reproduce sound was with
a verticle needle moved by a worm gear, not a slanted needle pulled along by
the groves in the records themselves, so he would not make the flat records
and continued to make the cylinders. Unfortunately the public liked the
flat records better, whether they were the best way to reproduce sound and
minimize wear on a recording media or not - they worked to the satisfaction
of the consumer and they liked them (my guess is that flat records take up
less room than cylinders). Consequently, Edison went to flat records too
late and there is no longer a Edison record lable in the current market -
only in record museums - as has the Lisa.

My opinion as an Apple employee at the time (79 to 86 in MIS) supports
your opinion. It was just plain hubris that John Couch's team thought
they knew what people needed (not what they wanted). I just don't have
the energy to regale the list with stories from meetings with Lisa
development staff. Don't misunderstand. These were very bright and
hardworking people. We had all be blinded to some degree by our
successes. We just thought we could do it all and do it alone. We
didn't get it.
