Re: error 23 on lisa2/10
when i boot up my lisa2/10 , i always get an error 23.(something with floppy error?) Check the floppy drive to see if it operates smoothly when a disk is inserted and ejected. Many of these 400k floppy drives do not operate properly due to sticky grease that must be cleaned off. is there a place where i can download a complete lisaOS ( which lisaOS works best on a lisa2/10?, i am unable to determine which OS is installed) Which OS is best is a matter of personal preference. There are internet sites with various Lisa OS versions, for example: http://www.whoopis.com/lisa/ http://www.macmothership.com/lisacontent/lisahome.html HTH, James James MacPhail Think not of engineering as art, [EMAIL PROTECTED] but of art as engineering Sigma Seven Systems Ltd. Re: Networking a Lisa
I have a hacked (not by me) localtalk connector The lisa is running OS 6.0.8, and the Wallstreet is running 9.2. when using the chooser I can see the Wallstreet, I can even attempt to connect, and the Lisa displays a list of Wallstreet volumes. I think this indicates you do have (more or less) appropriate software installed and your hacked localtalk connector is working. However, when I try to fully connect, nothing happens!!! Trying the same thing on the Lisa under OS 7.0.1 causes the system to crash with the error: Sorry, a system error occurred. Chooser divide by zero I have observed a similar issue with various computers running system software pre MacOS 8, including a MacPlus, and IIsi. I believe the reason is that Apple implemented a new User Authentication Module around the time of Mac OS 8 to improve security, and for whatever reason, it is not fully backwards-compatible (or perhaps you need to find just the right version of the AppleShare Workstation Software). Searching around on Apple's web site, I found various technotes including this one: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30497 Which says, in part: Computers that are running system software earlier than system software 7.5.1 should run AppleShare Workstation 3.5. Computers that are running system software 7.5.1 or later (up to but not including 7.5.3) should run AppleShare Workstation 3.6.5. Of course any particular version won't necessarily work on the Lisa, but it gives you a limit as to how new a version is worth trying. If you do find a particular combination of system software and AppleShare software that does allow you to mount a MacOS 9 volume on your Lisa, please let us know! Suggestions: I find that the newer system versions can mount volumes shared by the older versions. ie. if you run System 7.x on your Lisa, and turn on file sharing, you may be able to mount it on the Wallstreet. Alternately, I use an older computer running System 7.5.5 as a file server. I then mount a volume from this on both older and newer computers, and use it to transfer files between them. Since I change configurations often, I find the extra hop is less trouble than fiddling with file sharing in each new configuration. Re: RAM mod question for James McPhail
Ever since I read what you wrote about the 'LRamBo' 2 meg mod for the apple lisa 512k card I've been intrigued, and the 4 meg mod for Macworks Plus II. Where would I find information on doing these mods? I've searched the internet using google, and found nothing. Hi Phil, At the moment, I can't find a good site offering both of these either. It appears that some of the more extensive Lisa information sites are offline, or perhaps have been dropped from Google's index. a) I did find the instruction sheet for the 2 MB mod in two places. Note that the contact info on the sheet is out of date (phone number and CompuServe address). 1. Go to this page and scroll the right hand list to ram512-1 through -3. http://lisa.sunder.net/cgi-bin/bookview2.cgi?zoom=0?image=0?book=6 2. This site does not include pages 1 and 2, which were reverse engineered schematics of the 512K memory board. Since Apple schematics of the RAM board are available online (at the same site, for instance), I don't think this is a problem and page 3 is really all you need. http://www.freeinfosociety.com/electronics/schemview.php?id=1421 b) I am happy to email the 4 MB modification to those who ask, please let me know if you would prefer the format to be: MacDraw (the original document), generic PICT, or Acrobat PDF. To avoid annoying the other list members, please send your email to me directly rather than replying to this posting. The 4 MB modification instructions do not include information for using the Sun Remarketing memory board (which has SIMM sockets). I suspect that J1 on that board is to support the 4 MB modification, but I have not tested it. To be clear, the 4 MB modification only works with a few operating environments, such as MacWorks Plus II. It also works with MacWorks Plus 1.1h, and if the memory is restricted to 3.875 MB, with MacWorks Plus 1.0.18. Re: Lisa 2: Bad Disk Drive
*but* despite all my effort, the diske drive remain not functionnal. It make some noise at startup, like if head are blocked... I will try again to dismantle it and grease everywhere again... May be somebody have a spare diske drive ? Or Macintosh drive may work ? The 400K drive is the same as in the 128K and 512K Macintosh, so if you have one of those (and it sounds like you do), you could connect it to see if it works. If not, then suspect the I/O board and connectors. If another drive does work, then the original drive would seem to need maintenance. Other than the sticky grease problem, check to see if the pressure pad is still on the drive. It is a small felt pad opposite the read/write head, when a disk is inserted, it is the thing that holds the magnetic disk against the head. Sometimes the pressure pad falls off (or is torn off by forcibly ejecting a disk when the grease is sticky). Congratulations on fixing your off/on problem! Lisa won't stay off (was Lisa 2: Bad Disk Drive)
This was an aside to another problem, so it looks like it didn't get any attention: when I switch the Lisa off, it goes off then on immediately. I have seen a couple of causes for this problem, ones that come to mind are: 1) Damaged (broken) traces on the I/O Board due to corrosion from leaking batteries. If your I/O Board once had batteries on it, check the continuity of the traces in that area carefully. If it still has batteries on it, you should probably remove them and clean the circuit board in that area before battery leakage causes (more) damage. The battery is not required for startup or operation of the Lisa; it is only to keep the clock running and preserve some preference settings in RAM. Unlike a modern computer whose clock can run from the battery for years with no external power, the Lisa battery only lasts for a few hours when external power is interrupted. 2) Bad COPS, or perhaps poor contact with its socket. It may be enough to remove and re-insert the COPS to improve the connection. If not, replace the COPS with one from another I/O board... if it still doesn't work, then it probably isn't the COPS. 3) A couple of other parts on the I/O board can fail causing this sort of problem, so if the above don't help, let us know and we can start trouble-shooting. Re: Dead I/O Board?
Hi Clinton, It may be enough to remove and replace the I/O board and card cage a few times; this wipes the contacts so they make better contact. If that doesn't work, try cleaning the gold card-edge connectors between the CPU I/O boards and the motherboard and between the motherboard and the chassis. If alcohol and a soft cloth are not sufficient to get them clean, you can use a soft pencil eraser, but proceed gently or the gold will be erased. Also check the card-edge sockets for bent contacts, dust, corrosion, etc. If that doesn't do the trick, let us know. Good luck! James I/O board error 52. I read that re-seating the I/O board could help but I tried that and no luck. -- LisaList is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Schematics for Lisa 1.8 Amp DataPower power supply
Schematics are now available for the Lisa DataPower power supply. This is the power supply with part no. 699-0189, rated 120 VAC, 60 Hz, 1.8 Amp, 150 W on the label beside the power cord connector. Units intended for use outside of North America are labelled part no. 699-0190, and 220-240 V~, 50 Hz, 1 A, 150 W (same power supply, different internal jumper configuration). This power supply was original equipment in the Lisa 2/10 and Macintosh XL with internal widget hard drive, and is commonly used as an upgrade from the earlier 1.2 Amp power supply in other Lisas. Due to the time invested and reproduction costs, there is a nominal charge for copies. Re: Widget Startup Error 81
Hi Guido, Error 81 is not specific to the brake, other things can cause it. Does the drive ever spin-up? If not: after the brake is released, try to flip the flywheel with the eraser end of a pencil... sometimes this is enough to make it run. I think you spin the front edge from right to left (counter-clockwise when viewed from the bottom). If the spindle won't spin-up without the flip, try adjusting the brake; but I expect the motor (or the motor driver board) has a problem. I don't know of a fix for this or what the problem is; let us know if you find out! Good luck! James brake of the Widget in one on my Lisa makes a distinct clunk. With the Widget turned on the bottom I can see that the electric brake is relased and that the motor step try to spin moving in both the senses for 2 or 3 seconds. After that Lisa show an Error 81. My infos report a problem with the electric brake that, normally, need a re-adjust at 0,20 dec. But the brake is not freezed. The question: do you think this error (81) may be associated to a different problem or it's only associated to the solenoid re-adjustment and I can try to do it even the brake is not freezed ? Re: floppy head monitor runs continously .. anyone got a spare?
Hi Tom, I wonder, could I just use my SE's floppy in the Lisa? Yes you can, BUT You have to do some soldering work with the 1,44 super-drive Interesting! Please post your instructions so we can all have them (unless they are very long or need pictures). With this modification: - does this drive then work with the Lisa OS? - can one then use HD floppies reliably (although at 800k)? - is any specific I/O board ROM required? Cheers! Re: Help with dead lisa 2 getting closer!
Q: Would others prefer this to be off-list, or should it remain on-list? Hi Vince, The board I have is a XL board I believe because the board # is 620-142 which according to sun remarketing manual says its an XL board. But that manual says it will work in my Lisa 2/10. There is no battery pack on this board. I'm gonna check the other suggestion now on the board to try and get it to fire up. I was under the impression that you had a Lisa 2, not a Lisa 2/10, but it may not matter... The Lisa 2 has an external parallel port connector (near the serial ports on the back), the Lisa 2/10 does not. The Lisa 2/10 has an interrupt button, the Lisa 2 does not. Others may have different definitions of course. Various re-configurations and name changes confuse the issue of what is each kind of Lisa, however the prescence or abscence of a parallel port on the back panel of the motherboard is a reliable indicator. The Lisa 2 usually has the 1.2 Amp power supply, the 2/10 usually has the 1.8 Amp power supply, although both work in both machines, the extra power requirements of the 2/10 pretty much require the stronger power supply. (These nameplate ratings are for the 120 volt version, the 240 volt versions have different nameplate current ratings). As for I/O boards, I believe they are NOT completely interchangable, perhaps someone else can comment on this. If you have a back panel parallel port, your I/O board should be 620-0117 (with the battery switch, battery perhaps removed). If you do not have a back panel parallel port, your I/O board should be 620-142 (no battery). Just to verify, U7F a 7417. No jumper wire where you where describing, but I may have a different board than what you thought. Jumping pin 12 to 14 causing pin 12 to go high doesnt fire it up. U7F is a 7417 on both I/O boards. The flying wire is only present on 620-0117. It is possible I have the sense of the pin 12 voltage backwards. If it is 5V when the Lisa is off, try pulling it to ground to see if the power supply starts up. Ok, I checked U7F pin 12 and it does go to pin 120 on the edge connector. You could check that that pin goes through the motherboard and chassis to the power supply's edge connector, sorry I don't know what pin off-hand. Is there any way to check votages out of the power supply connector to verify it is the power supply? Since you have already confirmed the 5V standby power is working, there is no simple test. This is a problem with switching power supplies. Swapping power supplies would be the easiest thing, but not everyone has a garage full of Lisas (neither do I).
