[WSG] Environmentally conscious websites

With a looming winter power shortage in New Zealand, Webstock 
 has decided to act now and do our bit to help save 
energy. We've redone the site in a way we're convinced is a model for 
more rational and sustainable energy use.


Please take a look, and please spread the word. This is something we 
think's important. And any feedback on how we might improve on what 
we're doing is welcome too.

I gave a talk just under a year ago on web standards. It's up here:

and may give you some ideas.

It's best viewed in something like Firefox and in full-screen mode 
(F11). If you print it out, or print preview, you can also see my 
speaking notes.

A few tips I always try to keep in mind:
1. always wear cloths when public speaking
2. face the audience when talking to them (for some reason this can engage
them???)


See, for you Russ, and i *do* mean this in the best possible way, 
speaking naked (without cloths on ;) would absolutely engage the 
audience. I think you need to try this approach. I'm sure you, and the 
audience, will be pleasently surprised at the results.

[WSG] Setting focus in a form and screenreaders

If I set focus in a form to a particular field when the page loads 
(through javascript), does that have impact on a screenreader? eg - will 
it start reading from the field that is in focus and effectively "skip 
over" all content before that in source order?


Anyone know?

ok, having quickly tested in a demo of Jaws, it appears that it does. 
Jaws starts reading from the input form on page load.


This would seem a major accessibility problem to me then! Any arguments 
that it's not?

[WSG] Webstock conference recordings

Hi everyone

We now have all the recordings made at the recent Webstock conference
 available from the site.

There's a wealth of wonderful stuff there, including Doug Bowman on a
common structure for webpages, Ben Goodger on Firefox and Tony Chor on
IE7. The Darren Fittler presentation - using the web as a blind person -
is pretty much all you need to convince people of the importance of
accessibility.

And see Russ Weakley blather on about tagging :)
