Re: [FLEAA] Report of the Press Conference of the EVI last Friday, Aug. 29
So glad to have the latest report on your efforts in North Florida. Take Care, TED - Original Message - From: "Fran Sullivan-Fahs" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "FLEAA Mailing List" Sent: Tuesday, September 02, 2008 7:41 AM Subject: [FLEAA] Report of the Press Conference of the EVI last Friday,Aug. 29 For a long time we waited for this time to introduce the first family-owned, A 123, plug-in Prius to the public. There are now in the country about 200 (or more!) plug-in Priuses (Prii?). These are early-adopter technology cars and will become infinitely better with volume-in-production and with competition. But our family wants to get people to see that electric cars are fun, doable now, and practical. Our car was photographed beside a 1907 all-electric car owned by Devoe Moore, owner of The Antique Car Museum in Tallahassee. Mr Moore gave the ok to have our car plugged into his 50 Kw solar system on the roof of the museum. So The Spirit of EVI had solar power for its first charge! We served refreshments and people asked questions for hours. The part that felt the most wonderful was that after many of them asked all of their questions they often said quietly, "We are so glad that your family is doing this". I interpreted that to mean that the hopelessness that many people have been living with in regard to the erosion of their income (and lives) by high gas prices showed some sense of the "light at the end of the tunnel". Their relief that some one was actually doing something was palpable. Each time that one of you has done a presentation, talked to the camera, talked to a person, one-on-one, you have given hope to those who cannot yet be comfortable with a EV technology that they have little understanding of. Their questions were good, some based on careful study and some on general media hype. But most came to really learn, and, perhaps, to see some hope for their world and their children's world. Some may have come for the snacks. I will hopefully soon get some footage from the tv station to share with you. I will try to attach a photo of the car with its cool wrap (note the FLEAA weblog address on the back of the car) I might use the artist's simulation picture which shows the back of the car very clearly. I am amazed at the interest in EVs that exists in N. FL. Showings of this car have led me to give our FLEAA website address to many people. We will have a great subchapter going up here. Our family has planned for a long time to leave for a 2 month camping trip across the US in early Sept. We will be leaving Sept. 8 and will be towing our popup with an old Mercury Marquis. We will stay in touch with all our EVbuddies in towns which have restaurants with free wireless. When we return we will begin building the Panhandle FLEAA. Again, thanks to all the members that made our family's first EVgrin possible. In years to come our family will add more electric vehicles to our developing EVtribe. Our daughter will be going to college soon, and will take with her the knowledge of how to plug in her car, and the expectation that her school will provide that service to its students. Again, thanks to each of you who shared your knowledge, contacts, example and hope with me. The EVI will be coming through the state of FLorida in Jan. & Feb. of 2009. My husband has 30 years of working with the legislature. Those pre-session months are the prime time to connect with our representatives to promote rebates for those people who buy (or build) battery packs to convert cars to plug-ins. We will add that goal to our EVI list of goals. So this delay of the trip may prove to be very fortuitous! > ___ > Florida EAA mailing list > listserv@floridaeaa.org > http://www.floridaeaa.org > ___ Florida EAA mailing list listserv@floridaeaa.org http://www.floridaeaa.org

Fran, Bobbie and I were in Sarasota with the Honda Insight which made it into the Sarasota Newspaper. It was a wonderful event. We hope to have our Prius converted way before then, but this will help us have lots of time to line up accomodations, media, etc. Before all else, I want to say how much I appreciate you, the members of FLEAA who have been so supportive over the weeks and months with encouragement and ideas. And for those of you who took up the slack and gave excellent presentations in Sarasota with Michele Mician, I give another heartfelt thanks! That commitment was really weighing on my mind, and, as the date grew closer, I kept hoping that we could make it. Andrew Roddy called to let me know that he would do the long trip to have his super EBox there. I heard that Al Lococo was there with his wonderful truck that has logged over 2,000 miles. Also Al brought a presentation that is so very well written. Can you repost that, Al, for any members who may have missed it the first time around? And could your repost the address of your website that has many more of your clear and interesting EV writings? Also, James Parish participated with his plug-in Prius. We look forward to getting together with James at the rescheduled EVI. I know there were more EVers there (but I don't know names), and I thank you also. I am including below a copy of part of Michele Mician's thank you to members who were there. This shows the great job you did! Hi all! THANK YOU for all of your efforts. [FLEAA] GM EV's in the news

Re: [FLEAA] Fw: Article #1
Harvey, Stanford R. Ovshinsky, ECD President and CEO invented the NiMH battery. His company was ECD an called it the Ovonic Battery. He sold the patent to General Motors to be used in the EV-1. After GM decided to get out of the Electric Car business they sold the patent to Chevron/Texaco who renamed the company Cobasys. Initially ECD sold licenses to several companies one of which was Panasonic which made the batteries for the Toyota RAV4-EV. It was of course Chevron/Texaco who sued Toyota and Panasonic for Patent rights infringement because they did not want another fuel competing with Oil. Charles W. and Al Lococo also know the story better than I and can give you any other details including the other company who can make the large format NiMH batteries for EV's. Something tells me it is Gold Peak. According to SEC filings, ECD Ovonics and Cobasys hold 125 US patents related to NiMH battery technology. 13 of the patents, considered particularly important, are due to expire by 2014. It is a little more complicated than that but that is the basic idea. I have always been under the impression that Chevron/Texaco bought the patent rights to the NMH batteries; that to this day they won't release them to EV manufacturers. Is this accurate? Now you're saying that the original owner of the patent, who sold his patent to Chevron/Texaco, sued Toyota and Panasonic for patent infringement. Maybe I'm missing something, but how could the original patent holder sue anybody if he already sold the patent to Chevron/Texaco? I've talked to other members and they are as confused as I apparently am. I'm sorry to ask you for clarification, but, believe me, I'm not alone. The electric Minis are being built at the Mini factory in Oxford, England, without engines, gearboxes or fuel tanks, then shipped to Munich, Germany, where they are being fitted with electric powertrains. BMW sources told Automotive News Europe that 490 of the Minis will be leased to selected customers in California and 10 will be used as show cars. The electric Minis are painted silver and have yellow roofs, the sources said. BMW engineers working on the electric Minis are part of a new division called Project i established by the automaker to develop low-emission city cars. The electric Minis will help BMW to meet new California regulations that will require carmakers selling cars in the state to offer zero emission vehicles. Mini spokesman Cypselus von Frankenberg did not confirm that BMW is building electric Minis. "BMW will announce whether it will build electric vehicles or not later this year," he told ANE. Other carmakers are developing electric cars. Volkswagen, Daimler, PSA/Peugeot-Citroen and Renault have all announced electric-vehicle programs in recent months, joining several U.S. and Japanese automakers that are working on the technology. Re: [FLEAA] update on the EVI
Fran, I just talked with the event coordinator for Fort Myers Toyota, Vickie Ambrozewicz who seemed quite interested in holding an event at Fort Myers Toyota July 19. She has to run it by the marketing manager and the president of the Fort Myers Toyota before she can say yes but said that her company is interested in anything GREEN. I told her that a number of the conversions being done with the Hymotion/A123 kit are being done at other Toyota dealers and her eyes got big. Now she may want another meeting and possibly involve the service manager as well. I wonder if A123 might be interested in this event. If you have any email addresses I can keep anyone in the loop. This is getting exciting and maybe we can increase the number of EVs coming to Fort Myers for the event which she likened to a car show. TED - Original Message - From: Fran Sullivan-Fahs To: FLEAA Mailing List Sent: Friday, June 27, 2008 7:26 AM Subject: [FLEAA] update on the EVI For new folks to the FLEAA mailing list, The EVI is the Elecrtric Vehicle Initiative. This is a project that has been constructed to help bring to the people of Florida an awareness about the existance of cool, fun & practical electric vehicles that exist right now. The members of the FLEAA have taken this project as their own and have arranged some wonderful venues for getting this message out. Fran Sullivan-Fahs, Ron Fahs, and Joy Fahs, a family who live in N. Florida, will be driving their plug-in hybrid Prius to meet these other members in their home areas to showcase the variety of PHEVs and EVs that are available and to help individuals, families and fleet owners choose the type of vehicle that fits their needs. Update re: the Initiative... There has been a delay in the conversion of our family's Prius. It will not affect the wonderful presentations which some of you have set up for the Initiative in your regions. It will require pruning the first part of the trip -i.e., initial Tallahassee photo ops and the FSEC at Cocoa plans. I have a lot of respect for A 123, the battery makers and makers of the lithium ion nanophosphate kit that is EPA crash tested. They are very careful with their testing. Their kit will help our electrification of vehicles in a big way. Just yesterday I got to talk with a young woman, Erin Scott, who is their Inside Sale Representatiave. She is really dedicated to A 123's commitment to produce an impeccable battery kit. I am also very fortunate to have had Charles Whalen help me connect with The Advanced Vehicle Research Center. They are our installers and Negotiators Supreme. Dick Dell, The Executive Director of AVRC and Glenn Edmonds, the Program Manager have a lot of big projects that they are working on, but they have kept the communication going through this whole process in a great way between A 123 and myself. So far, the July 11 onward portion of The Electric Vehicle Initiative remains on schedule and intact. If some of that next week needs to be readjusted I will let you know as soon as A 123 or AVRC lets me know. This situation reflects what I call the challenge of being an early adopter. The sooner one can release one's specific expectations and go with whatever is, the better everything will be. I trust that all players are doing their best and that will be quite wonderful enoughThis will be a grand adventure. Thanks, everyone, for your important parts that you are playing! TED - Original Message - From: Al Lococo To: FLEAA Mailing List Sent: Tuesday, June 24, 2008 9:37 AM Subject: Re: [FLEAA] McCain calls for new EV battery technology Folks, You know me, I'm skeptical. A post from someone name Info. Is this information or propaganda? The $300 million prize for a better car battery is not necessary. What we need are plug-in cars, PHEVs and BEVs. When do we need 'em, now! How do we get 'em, with the proper incentives, properly administered. For example, we have a $1,000 Hybrid incentive. What does GM do they build a "Mild Hybrid" to qualify for the incentive. That's how they compete. If the incentive were properly administered, the "Mild Hybrid" wouldn't qualify, and they wouldn't build it. The government introduces a small businesses incentive for vehicles weighing over 6,000 pounds, GM introduces the Hummer. This incentive peaked at $125,000 in 2007. http://www.crestcapital.com/tax/tax_deduction_calculator.aspx Do incentives work, you bet they do. The first task of the current administration, was to dismantle incentives that favored BEVs and Hybrids. The BEV incentive was dropped and the Hybrid research program was converted to a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Program. A 10,000 or $20,000 or more incentive per vehicle would go a long way towards getting PHEVs and BEVs on the road. Too bad the government can't do for electric vehicles what it did for the Hummer The incentive should be ramped so that as the population of PHEVs and BEVs increases, the incentives are reduced. This will motivate buyers to get in early. Too bad our candidates don't understand the capabilities of the technologies we already have and the power of incentives to apply these technologies to the problem at hand. Plug in, we have the technology and Toyota RAV4 is the proof. Not to mention the AC Propulsion, E-Box and the Tesla roadster. How about the AFS Trinity? For those of you who have not heard the news, McCain has step forth and says that he wants the federal government to pay "300 Million" to help develop a new EV battery. What does mean to us? It means that the new battery will be developed with wait for it."public money". Translated, it means that there will not be a corporation(like Chevron) that can prevent the technology from being mass produced. [FLEAA] Fw: FYI
- Original Message - From: Walter & Olive Sergeant To: Edward Ellyatt Sent: Friday, May 02, 2008 7:46 AM Subject: FYI Electric Nissans Planned in U.S. by 2010 By EDWARD TAYLOR May 2, 2008; Page B2 CASCAIS, Portugal -- Nissan Motor Co. Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn said he is preparing to take advantage of a "mass market" in electric vehicles he expects to emerge by 2012. Nissan, an alliance partner of Renault SA of France, will launch electric vehicles in the U.S. and Japan in 2010, and globally by 2012, Mr. Ghosn said at a Nissan event in Portugal. He said he expects the market for electric vehicles to grow strongly due to high oil prices, a new awareness of environmental issues and breakthroughs in battery technology. Eventually, Nissan "will have a whole lineup of electric cars," he said. "The electric car is not a niche product for us." Mr. Ghosn said battery-technology advances have given the electric car sufficient range to make it a viable mode of transport for the shorter journeys often made by commuters in big cities. Globally about 10 million vehicles are being used in this way, he said. High oil prices and the willingness of governments to give tax incentives for so-called zero-emission vehicles can change the economics of owning an electric car and make it "cheaper than gasoline," Mr. Ghosn said. Nissan and Renault are in talks with "companies, governments and cities," to see what kind of incentives can make the introduction of zero-emission vehicles more attractive, he said. Mr. Ghosn expects new areas of business will open as electric vehicles become more widespread, including making the batteries and providing access to batteries and electricity. Moving beyond merely making cars could see "a change of the business model" in the auto industry. "In some ways it could move more toward how a mobile-phone operator works, because there the handset is only one part of the business; the rest is providing services to customers," said Mr. Ghosn. One drawback of electric vehicles has been battery capacity, limiting their range. Another is that recharging a battery traditionally takes hours, far longer than to refuel a car with gasoline. Nissan and Renault are looking at ways to fix that. Renault will use a battery provided by Nissan for an electric vehicle to be launched in Israel, Mr. Ghosn said. Mr. Ghosn reiterated that Nissan is open to expanding its alliance with Renault to other car companies, but he said that would happen only if it created value for Renault and Nissan's stakeholders. ALso, maybe we should ask her what else we can do to expedite this? What do you think? Maybe everyone already knows about this but me? Fran -Original Message- From: Holly Binns <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Holly Binns <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tue, 8 Apr 2008 10:47 am Subject: Clean Cars coalition sign-on letter Dear Colleagues, Right now, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection is developing a rule to implement the Clean Cars Program in Florida. The Clean Cars program would significantly reduce tailpipe emissions of global warming and other harmful air pollutants from cars and trucks, and is an important component of Governor Crist’s goal of making Florida a leader in reducing global warming pollution. An Environment Florida analysis found that implementing the Clean Cars program in Florida will reduce global warming emissions by an amount equal to removing 13.8 million of today’s cars from the road for a year, and save consumers over $4 billion at the gas pump when it is fully implemented in 2020. Unfortunately, the auto industry is lobbying hard to convince Governor Crist and the DEP to back off of their commitment to join twelve other states in implementing the Clean Cars program here in Florida. That’s why we need your help. Pasted below is a sign-on letter to DEP Secretary Sole, encouraging the DEP to move forward with adopting the Clean Cars program. Our plan is to submit this letter to the DEP as part of the official public comment record in order to demonstrate the broad support for Clean Cars from environmental, public health and consumer groups. Please take a moment to read the letter, and email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] to sign onto the letter with your name, title and the name of your organization. I would like to have all signers on the letter by Friday, April 18th. For more information on the Clean Cars program, visit our website at http://www.environmentflorida.org/issues/global-warming/cleaner-cars-for-florida or the DEP website at http://www.floridadep.org/air/rules/ghg/california.htm. Thanks for your consideration. Holly Binns *** Holly Binns Environment Florida, Field Director [EMAIL PROTECTED] 850-224-5944 Office 850-322-7845 Cell www.EnvironmentFlorida.org March 28, 2008 To: Secretary Mike Sole, Florida Department of Environmental Protection Official Public Comments Regarding: Rule Title: Adoption of California Motor Vehicle Standards Rule #: 62-285.400 __ Dear Secretary Sole, We, the undersigned organizations, strongly support the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s proposal to adopt the California Motor Vehicles Standards, also known as the Clean Cars program. Scientists have said we need to reduce the pollution that causes global warming by 80% over the next 50 years. Governor Crist has taken a bold first step by laying out a plan that makes Florida a leader in that effort. One of the most important parts of that plan is the adoption of the Clean Cars Program, which sets limits on global warming pollution from cars, light trucks and SUVs. In adopting the Clean Cars Program, Florida will join 12 other states—California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington. Transportation is Florida’s second largest source of carbon dioxide pollution—responsible for more than 42% of the state’s emissions in 2004.[1] And because there are more cars on the road and people are driving more, the problem is only getting worse. In Florida, the Clean Cars program would cut global warming pollution 54.4 million metric tons by 2020—the equivalent of removing 13.8 million of today’s cars from the road for a year.[2] In addition, vehicle exhaust creates ground-level ozone, an air pollutant that impacts public health conditions like asthma and lung disease. Nationally, cars, pick-up trucks, vans and SUVs are responsible for nearly one-half of all smog emissions, exposure to which has been linked to increased hospital emergency room visits, asthma attacks and perhaps to the onset of asthma itself.[3] The Clean Cars program is not only an effective tool to curb global warming pollution, but will also reduce harmful air pollution, particularly in congested urban areas.[4] On behalf of our members and supporters, we thank you and Governor Crist

As electric vehicles are becoming more recognized and understood, the media is taking notice. Most coverage comes from the internet, some from print media, but now it's even on the evening news. I think we should all do our best to cultivate a good relationship with the media as the opportunity arises. Danielle Dubetz from WPTV News Channel 5 did a great story on the AC Propulsion eBox, along with her camera crew and support staff. It would be really helpful if everyone would send her an email to thank her for the great coverage, along with their name and where they are from; and also to encourage her to continue to cover electric vehicles in the future. I'm sure she and her staff would be impressed to see how far her story has gone. We should not underestimate the power of positive feedback. We all need support in our efforts to improve our lives and our standard of living, and hopefully have some fun in the process. By the way, it was Danielle who pitched the idea to her boss and followed through with the story to its completion. [EMAIL PROTECTED] Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you. It made my mom cry. I had seen it twice already, the first time I saw it in theaters it just was upsetting; the second time I watched it, it made me cry. This time, I am just kind of confused why car manufacturers aren't selling plug-in hybrids already, we need them now! My grandmother is borrowing it from me to show it on her retirement community's TV channel, yay! I'm not currently a member, but now that I know I'll be in FL for at least the next year, I want to join. I had a question about membership though, online there is only one option: National EAA (FL chapter) $39; but on the .pdf form there are 3 options: FLEAA only $25, National EAA only $37, and FLEAA and National EAA $50. I'm guessing the online option is the same as the second option on the form? What's the difference between the options? Agreed.. - Original Message - From: Shawn Waggoner (FLEAA) To: 'FLEAA Mailing List' Sent: Wednesday, February 20, 2008 11:14 AM Subject: [FLEAA] Blind advocates lobby for noisier hybrid cars Hi Everyone, I have heard this argument brought up a few times over the last year, and have been hearing it made more and more over the last couple of months. It seems the 'advocates' are making great headway with the media and getting great attention. While I agree that some hybrids and EV's are hard to hear, I think mandating that cars produce noise is not the right answer. What do you guys think? I personally enjoy the silence of driving an EV around. The driver should be responsible enough to observe his/her surroundings while driving. http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9874568-7.html?tag=nefd.pulse Shawn -- ___ Florida EAA mailing list listserv@floridaeaa.org http://www.floridaeaa.org ___ Florida EAA mailing list listserv@floridaeaa.org http://www.floridaeaa.org
