RE: [OzMOSS] Parent Lists

2007-09-05 Thread Aaron Tamblyn
If you are looking for a lookup field to a list on a parent site then you can
create a site column that is a lookup to the parent list. From there you can
use the site column in the list on your child site/s.

Hi Trent - check out a custom field type that does lookups across site(s).

This is a great start + Sharepoint Designer as Johnny mentioned.

Subject: [OzMOSS] Parent Lists

Hi All,

A client has a need that SharePoint to be able to access lists that are on a
root site from child sites. Example: We have a list of sites with relevant
details about the site (manger, site manager, facilities etc). We need to
access this list as lookups from child lists. What is the best method of doing
this, is there a way we can allow SharePoint to see these lists or is there an
alternative?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Not sure if i understood your requirement right. Anyway, using data
view webpart you can pull the list items from the top level site and
display them in your child sites (Aka Sub Sites). You can set
filtering, sorting, modify the look etc. Unfortunately, we don't have
this feature OOTB. Instead use SharePoint Designer 2007. There are
nice blog postings on how to use data view web part.

Cheers

Hi Trent,
Two solutions come to mind.
1) Using static links to those sites..not elegant but will work and ideal
2) Write your own navigation component that will facilitate this functionality
or even have a look around codeplex to see if someone else has already done
this. I would see if something else exists before writing my own ☺

I will see what already exists and see what i can find.

HTH somewhat.

Cheers,
Aaron
