Re: [Live-demo] Motion: That we set up an OSGeo-Live Translators email list

2017-10-23 Thread massimo di stefano
I’m +0 as well,

In anywise if there will be a translation list I will probably subscribe to it.
looking at the low traffic produced by live-demo list I think it will not
bother at all to have translation issues in the main list.
Also considering the new transfex approach and the Git-based repository, there
will be some technicality that will be of interest to all of us …

Cheers,

Re: [Live-demo] [Qgis-user] OSGeo Live with VM doesn't work

2017-03-25 Thread massimo di stefano
I’m testing the live, 64 bit iso, on a parallels VM.

The installation went smooth by first running the live,
then hit the icon to install it from the live desktop.

The other way to install the live,
from the booth menu as the iso gets mounted,
didn’t worked for me but I can’t provide any logs at the moment.

Correct, the MVC system in jupyter is handled by ipywidgets [1] which use
traitlets [2] to handle the status of a python object (the cesiumwidget uses
the “on_change” callback to notice python about state-changes of a variable
happening on the js side)

 https://github.com/ipython/ipywidgets

 http://traitlets.readthedocs.org/en/stable/

in the ipywidgets there are standard GUI elements like buttons, sliders, text
input etc.
part of this project will aim to extent the widgets adding a "JS map canvas”
which is based on cesium.

the main cesiumwidget repository is fine, we can continue the discussion about
this specific coding task there.

The development of the GUI part during the GSoC period will be based on master
version of both cesiumwidget, ipywidget and jupiter.
For the processing part the idea will make extensive use of the software tools
available under the geopython organization http://geopython.github.io/

But the time is short, for this coding task you can avoid the installation
steps and jump right into development.

Just download the latest OSGeo-Live iso from:

http://osprey.ucdavis.edu/downloads/osgeo/gisvm/gisvm/9.5rc1/

and install it a Virtual Machine.
you will find the 2 main files in:

/usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/CesiumWidget-0.1.0-py2.7.egg/CesiumWidget/cesiumwidget.py
  # for the python code

and in :

/usr/local/share/jupyter/nbextensions/CesiumWidget/cesium_widget.js # for the
JS code

Note:

This GSoC idea is a “Cross Project” development idea, where several tools
available in the Open Source Ecosystem are used and development of novel code
is required. I will focus on the use of the software tools available under the
geopython organization http://geopython.github.io/

where the JS-cesiumwidget is used as map canvas to expose the capabilities of
software libraries like owslib, pywps and pycsw.

The OSGeo-Live here is used as “substrate” where all this tools and data are
made available. This will simplify the development of cross projects ideas and
focus on “development” of novel tools.

For this idea to be successful a second co-mentor with a good JS background is
desired.
I’ll add more details on the GSoC page late today.

Cheers,
Massimo.___

Re: [Live-demo] Notebook-review

2016-03-15 Thread massimo di stefano
Cameron,

this efforts is to ensure the work done for the GSoC-2015 will receive a proper
review as it didn’t get the required attention during the GSoC period.
That’s the objective of the wiki page on the relative github repository.

It is obvious that notebooks as well as any other contribution to the live,
needs guidelines and rules.
in my previous mail I addressed some of them in the section:

contributing new notebooks to the live
https://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/live-demo/2016-March/011010.html
<https://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/live-demo/2016-March/011010.html>

Of course the OSGeo wiki is the right place for those guidelines.

Note:
Notebook guidelines is a separate task from the GSoC notebook review, where
those guidelines are (and will) respected.

I started to add information here:

we can agree in having a template system for heading and footer of each
notebook, have a look at the header in the GSoC notebooks where the first cell
is a markdown cell which help the user to navigate the notebook server
filesystem

(NOTE: you need to run the notebook in order to see it)

I’m sorry but in my understanding this should have been part of a mentor's
responsibility during my gsoc.
I had a very good experience with the other 2 mentors who have don a great job
in reviewing and addressing the technical part of my GSoC.
I should remind you that according with pre-GSoC discussion your rule was to
contribute in the non-technical aspects of the project.

Hi Sarthak Can you provide us more info about your programming background
(languages) and to any work/project you did with open source geospatial
software?

I also recommend to have a detailed look at:
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code_Recommendations_for_Students

and a look at how past proposal are structured. The student is suppose to
compile a complete proposal including a detailed timeline.

you can find a black of the reports at:
http://epinux.com/OSGeo-live/osgeolive-gsoc-2015/Report/

The main coding-part of the GSoC-2015 idea focus on the development of a js
widget to render and interact geospatial data within a notebook.
Cesium-js has been chosen as map-canvas, so most of the development will happen
on the cesium widget code but the same code-concepts apply with any other
js-map canvas. Essentially what is needed is a “bi-directional communication”
between python and js (which is performed using the ipywidget library).

There are unresolved issue that you can start with.
The first basic one is to have the cesium-js mouse action and camera parameters
sending back information to the python kernel.

see this issue:
https://github.com/petrushy/CesiumWidget/issues/17

To test your skill:

essentially what is needed is a global variable say:“camera view”
where info about the camera status [lat, lon, roll, pitch, heading] are stored

From python we want the functions ```zoom_to``` and ```fly_to``` to use this
variable to update the camera status

and we also want update the same variable “ camera view”
each time the status of the camera will change (from the js side, eng: each
time the user will pan, zoom etc .. the cesium globe)

Hope it make sense, feel free to mail me, add comment on the github issue or
join us on irc.

Note: there is an other student which already showed interest in the same
project, he/she is in cc to this mail.

Thanks,

Massimo.

[Live-demo] Notebook-review

2016-03-13 Thread massimo di stefano
From the discussion we had so far it is clear to me we need a *official
revision procedure* to have the work done for the GSoC integrated into the live.

I agreed in “hiding” the jupyter notebook, and so the GSoC work, from this
release of the Live,
in favor of a transparent public commitment to review the efforts done.

IMHO the spreadsheet approach we use for project review doesn’t apply very well
in this context.
To facilitate keeping track of the review and facilitate potential new
contributors,
I propose to open a motion in accepting the use of github checklist+issue
tracker to keep track of the review process.

I started this page, which should help in making this possible:

https://github.com/epifanio/OSGeoLive-Notebooks/wiki/Notebook-review

>

We can improve it making it more clear, but should give you the idea.

This motion is to validate the work done during GSoC, which is:

“Development of educational material in the form of interactive notebooks”

and to help the coordination between potential contributors for this specific
topic.

Here it is my +1

Cheers,
Massimo.

Thanks Johan,

I really appreciated the feedback and the testing!

I also hope more people will be nterested in contributing to those noteboks.

the attempt to release everything for 9.5 failed .. it failed becose I'm
alone.
I'm sure that with a group of dev we can have every issuesorted out in a
very short time.

My aim is to develop valid educational material with rich documentation and
linking all togethere (not a showcase from sw project, which also make
sense and is needed, but is not my target).

Inspiration to write a novel notebook? Just go on gis stack exchange chose
an hard common task that people struggle with ... and develop an OSGeo
notebook to solve the problem.

Answer to the stack exchange pointing to a link that refers to the
osgeolive notebook .. and I'm sure it will have an impact on the general
GIS users.

Thanks a lot for the feedback again :)

The link when the OSGeo user start the notebook serer should open the
browser and point to the "notebook dashboard" linking to the TOC:

https://github.com/johanvdw/OSGeoLive-Notebooks/blob/c80543a1f2cf6820f2e9bff1a1e0d12744380ee1/index.ipynb

in the short TOC there is an introduction to the usage of the notebook:

https://github.com/johanvdw/OSGeoLive-Notebooks/blob/c80543a1f2cf6820f2e9bff1a1e0d12744380ee1/introduction-to-jupyter-notebook.ipynb

which point to "shift+enter" kind of stuff ...

anyone who want be involved in this develpment,
please partecipate to the motion for the notebook evaluation.

is a long way to go ... but i'm sure you will enjoy the trip...

cheers,
Massimo

As per the GSoC notebooks, I think I’m demonstrating that you should not worry
about their maintenance.

I addressed your comment, I can’t speak for the notebooks under the projects
directory.

My recommendation is:

we can rename the GSoC-2015 directory .. perhaps with the name of the idea
itself which is:

Open Source Geospatial Notebooks.

then if you have concerns about the “projects" directory, we can comment it out
from the table of contents and leave it on disc.

note the quick start and overview they both uses the GSoC material, so they
will not be affected.

[Live-demo] Motion: merge GSoC-2015 PR

2016-03-09 Thread massimo di stefano
To All,

during the last 2 years I worked in having the python software ecosystem
included in the OSGeo-Live.
The PR proposed below [1] is a first step towards the official inclusion of
this work into the project.

As you may have noticed from previous e-email [2] there isn’t a clear agreement
on the decision to take.
We had an IRC discussion (logs [3]) with an initial motion to merge the
notebook PR.

I would like to have a voting started here on the mailing.
this is mine:

Thanks,
Massimo.

Re: [Live-demo] OSGeoLive 9.5 status: pre-RC - Jupyter Notebooks

2016-03-08 Thread massimo di stefano
Hi,

I’ll try to address some of the issues raised in the last couple of mails:

1) concern about adding extra materials to the live
2) Include or drop jupyter from 9.5 release
3) contributing new notebooks to the live
4) which notebook to include on Osgeo-Live 9.5

1) About the concern in adding extra materials to the live:

To address:
Cameron:
>>> I concerned about how much new material we are attempting add related to
>>> Jupyter notebooks, all at the last moment.

Angelos:
> Furthermore, as part of the Jupyter setup, a big number [2] [3] of Python
> projects/libraries were also added to OSGeoLive, as soft dependencies to
> support Notebooks, without official review or decision by the community,

From the dependencies listed by Angelos and linked here:

> [2] https://github.com/OSGeo/OSGeoLive/blob/master/bin/install_jupyter.sh#L30
>
> [3] https://github.com/OSGeo/OSGeoLive/blob/master/bin/install_jupyter.sh#L43
>

My proposed PR —> https://github.com/OSGeo/OSGeoLive-Notebooks/pull/5

uses the following packages:

###
python-matplotlib
python-scipy
goal-bin

python-geographiclib
python-geocoder
###

From which only the last 2 are new to the osgeolive.
The other packages where already installed in the previous version of the
OSGeo-live
and are pretty common in the OSGeo software ecosystem.

In the PR comments, I added notes on its footprint, which is in the order of 10
MB.

2) Include jupyter YES or NO

I’ll leave this to the community, but i should clarify that:

- ’there is a tremendous amount of work behind the finally complete jupiter
packaging’ that makes the live a better product.
- all the notebooks developed for the GSoC are working just fine with ipython
notebook as well as with jupiter notebook.

And I should point out that:
- ipython notebook is not something new to the OSGeo-live, it is more than one
year that is shipped within the OSGeo-live.
- the notebook has been successful adopted by some of the main OSGeo projects
during OSGeo-conference workshops
   (see [1] [2] as example)
- to have the GSoC merged into the current OSGeo-live, there is no need of
jupiter ... if you really want to drop it :( .

3) contributing new notebooks to the live:

Although the notebook can be used as a “scripting tool” or like a simple ide
IMHO the notebook is not just that, the notebook adds the capabilities to
include rich descriptive narrative to a data processing workflow including the
possibilities to interact with data through a nicely done widget interactive
system and finally enabling the printing of publication-ready reports (see
latex inline rendering and pdf export).

Also, on the OSGeo-live, we are aiming (AFAIK) to use the same `common dataset`
among projects (or, at least, we attempt to) this way different software
projects can be more easily compared, say for complexity of their usage or for
output quality/performance comparison.

Having said that,
from a first look at all the other notebooks (or I should say, the only ones if
the PR will be not accepted ) shipped within the OSGeo-live I noticed that
almost all the notebooks under the “projects” folder [3] are not the result of
original work. Some of those notebooks are just a carbon copy of the examples
.py (script) code from the relative `project src code` on GitHub and the
potential offered by the notebook platform is not exploited at all. … no
problem from my side in having them included on the OSGeo-live, but I hope the
contributors of those notebook will make a more effective use of the tool.

Moreover, almost none of those notebooks make use of the data we already ship
within the live…
Hint: the notebook developer (I said developer, right … not just contributors)
can make use of one of the power of the notebook which is the capability of
mixing python and bash in the same document . ...
eg. you need a geoJSON file? just use ‘ogr2ogr' to convert one of our ’shape
file' to the format you need … or make a numpy loop generate user defined novel
data .. perhaps from a nice query to PostGIS (via psycopg) … it will take few
lines of code and a nicely done HTML description for each step)

4) which notebook to include on OSGeo-Live 9.5

while I’d love to see more people contributing to the notebook ecosystem on the
OSGeo-live as well. In regards to the GSoC notebooks, I can’t see how possibly

I'm back online but working on an abstract (deadline tomorrow 7) if we can
wait till then.. I'll be happy to make a fresh rebuild using the new
gdal... Unfortunately a lot of dev packages (including osg) seems to be
broken in both debian and ubuntu repository because of recent updates to
gdal and GTiff.
Can you resume what's the status of packages like grass, gdal and gdal
grass?
See you on irc.

Re: [Live-demo] [live-demo] OSSIM installation

2012-07-17 Thread Massimo Di Stefano

Hi Angelos,

unfortunately the new ossim trunk build only against osg 2.8 .. quite old,
while the standard osg pkg on ubuntu is 3.0+ (also used by osgearth)
to avoid duplication of libs and save space on the live i'm waiting the ossim
dev team to finally switch to osg 3.0. before to spend more time on packaging
the ossim suite for the live.

in the main time i'm working hard trying to integrate into the osgeolive ossim-
package also the OMAR sw and the 3 years GSOC's.
this will require a lot of work and time ... i'm not ready for this osgeo
release.

hopefully soon i'll be able to have a .deb working … but until then …
please go ahead for the ossim-core package installation
(of course the quick start will not work on it)

i hope to find more time and resource to support the osgeolive-ossim installer
in the next months

Massimo.

the ossim stuff will not works on 12.04 using the default osg 3.x
the dev need to adapt the code to run with osg 3.x (ossim is stuck on 2.8)
… an hack for me will be to build osg2.8 and store only the needed lib the
binary pkg … but this will increase the pkg size.

i mailed the ossim list to worn them about this.

i've a runing vm 12.04 to test the live build too. (it gives me problem with
the vbox additions, the mouse pointer has a bad offset .. anyone with the same

Re: [Live-demo] New apps for 6.0

2012-04-10 Thread Massimo Di Stefano

I think here we should start to think a better way to save space :
-Remove the installer for osx and windows (put them in a separate disk and
leave the link to download them inside the live).
-Tring to use as much we can the same set of data for all the apps … big
challenge
-Switch to open-jdk for the java apps ,

this 3 steps will allow us to save a lot of space.

i don't like th idea to split the Live-Demo in function group (if the demo is
used as showcase for the geo-app)
that idea make sense instead to build a Live dedicated for educational purpose
(where the teacher/student needs more data more tutorials and less apps)

p.s.
Maybe, can be this a topic to discuss at OSGeo-NA ?

Re: [Live-demo] OSSIM not working on live 4.5

2011-08-09 Thread Massimo Di Stefano
i tried to debug the problems :

- ossimplanet worked on the latest live.iso (5.0-beta)

- imagelinker instead had some trouble :
the binary package was using gdal1.8.0 (i checked on libgdalossim_plugin.so)
  there was 2 missed packages : libqt4-qt3support, libgdal1-1.8.0-grass

i applied the needed change to the svn install script.

i guess all will works on the osgeolive 5.0.x release.

[Live-demo] Re: Which version of ossim should be installed on the next OSGeo-Live?

2011-07-04 Thread Massimo Di Stefano
Hi All

finally back at home i had a chance to update the ossim build to the latest svn
on Xubunu 11.04
i tried the script and "maybe" should works ... the only issue is about the
desktop icons
they use the old path :

  /usr/local/ossim/executable
instead of :
 /usr/local/ossim/bin/executable

where are stored the .desktop files on the svn repository?
i'll apply this changes and i'll try the script on a fresh VM to test it.

thanks.

Massimo.

2011-06-12 Thread Massimo Di Stefano
Record my desktop is really good!

i used it few weeks ago to make a presentation ...

(sorry to use youtube, the next time i'l use vimeo that's more foss oriented)

that's OssimPlanet that display maps generated on the fly by Grass.

i had only problems to record my second screen at the same time .. but i think
will be easy to fix

Re: [Live-demo] ORFEO Toolbox in OSGeoLive?

2011-01-14 Thread Massimo Di Stefano
+1 to split the mac+win installer and the linux live in 2 separate disc

having finally this space "freed" we can think about a more nice dataset
structure without worring too mutch about space
we can also add prersentation educational materials etc ...

Nice to have OTB in the live!!!

For the OTB dataset we should be able to use a common dataset with other sw
that performs image analysis (at least for ossim, otb and grass (v/r.external))
for now the ossim dataset is based only on 3 landsat band (r,g,b) and the
relative srtm elevation data

what about "high resolution" ?
is enough the 15m resolution of the landsat pancromathic band ?

Or are you thinking about very high resolution data ? (ikonos, quickbird) ?
for hi-res data i can't find too many free dataset on line,
... seems they are free available only for the "crisis zone" (like heartquake
in Cina etc ...)

let me know .

Ciao,

Massimo.

Re: [Live-demo] Italian translation

2010-09-12 Thread Massimo Di Stefano
All, Marco,

i set-up an omegT project to have the "source and target directory" in sync
with the svn trees

simply i choose as source location :

osgeo/doc/en

and as target location :

osgeo/doc/it

iomegaT will detect all the .rst files in the en/* trees (all the sub-dir too),
then :

"projet -> generate target documents"
"proggetto -> crea i documenti di arrivo"

it will generate .rst files in the it/* target location

going ahead with translation we will be able to commit the progress
and every time we start with a new translation-session
we have to do an " svn up " on the trunk

i hope this is the process all we need to follow (i'm new to colaborative
translations)

thanks for any hints

2010-09-09 Thread Massimo Di Stefano
Hi Marco,

happy to see you on board.

there is a lot of work to do,

finally we can start the live - localizzation, this will be a good job for the
osgeo loaclchapters ;-)

we need to discuss the structure inside the svn tree to handle the future new
files.
then we can start the translation, maybe starting from the presentation (.odt)
and later switch to the SW documentation and quickstart (.rst)

regards,

Massimo.

P.S.

For the IT language we can also integrate this lve-traslation-work in the
gfoss.it site
(in gfoss.it we already have some translated docs, but not all the project are
listed
... so it will benefit the addition of the new project descriptions from sw
installed on the live 4.0)

we can discuss this topic on the local list too.

see you later for future coordination ;-)

knowing pywps will have a workshop at foss4g i asked them for a script and
quickstart notes

i'm not a pywps guru, the people on the pywps list helped me to have the script
working.

jackym was preparing the materials based on the already installed
mapserver+OL+data
...
in the maintimei wrote :

pwps_definition.html

pywps_overview.rst

it only lacks the "quick satrt" beacouse needs more pywps knowledge
(a simple test to print out the get capabilities is ialready in)

but now that pywps will be not included (neither in background:-( ) on the
live-dvd
i don't know if/when/how the dev team will help to finish the missed
quickstart-tutorial examples.

thanks i see the commit on the irc-boot :-)

 :-(
problems comes up when there is no people directly intersted
for pywps i offered my full time unlucky this time i started too late to work
on the live,
i had to finish my study

a note for the next time :
if we will know which workshops will be avaiable at foss4g
i'd like to see on the disc at least the sw and materials needed to partecipate
to the workshop
i guess this is important to have a good feedback from who will partecipate at
foss4g

[Live-demo] new plug-inpackages for qgis

2010-08-10 Thread Massimo Di Stefano
Testing Qgis

i see the plug-in SDA4P fails as also fails ManageR and all related to R
beacouse the step :

easy_install rpy2 don't works as aspected

i replaced it with :

apt-get install python-rpy2

it should works, i tried it locally.

continue the test on qgis side, i see alot of plug-in are out-of-date
hence i downloaded them from scratch and make a new plugin.tar.gz package
it will be downloaded directly from the script

Qgis has the grass problem unresolved, please anyone can dive into it ?
qgis-grass plug-in is a "big resource" for osgeo.

[Live-demo] PyWPS on the live disc

2010-08-10 Thread Massimo Di Stefano
Hi All,

i added a script to install PyWPS,

i'm also writing the neded docs and steps as for any project on the disc.

looks at the script it don't touch anything that can breack something
i also tested it on a fresh live-build procedure and the get-capabilities
are working fine.

in the next hours will be also ready an example based on openlayer as client.

Plese apologize the time gap, i think pywps can be included in the live build
(it simply works and it will be also one of the sw used in the foss4g workshop)

thanks,

Massimo.

2010-08-07 Thread Massimo Di Stefano
Apologize me i gorghet to send the message to the list i'm fwd it.

update, i have ulteriorly reduced the size
(i deleted the sonamed libs, there are a lot of duplicates,
i suppose we don't need them on the live)

the full size for "usr/local/ossim" is now around 65 mb

thanks to help me to tune the script.

Massimo.

i've tested it on a local VM, all goes ok.
looking at the script see what it does, it can't break anything

i tried to run all the build script using the updated instyall_ossim2.sh, ossim
 tests seems to works fine

i gived a look at the test results ... seems 80% of the failure are about "data
not found or data can't be load"
that's weird seems on the iso used to test the install data script don't works
as aspected ?!

i'm starting right now a fresh build using the latest script to see what happens

2010-08-06 Thread Massimo Di Stefano
Hi added a new script inside the bin directory : install_ossim2.sh

it install a locally build version for ossim (last svn checkout) and fix a bug
in imagelinker application (using qt3 instead of qt4)

tell me if i can replace the script in the main.sh so we can see if it's all ok
(i tested it locally and it should work)

Hamish :-) i'm sure the script will benefit from your eyes :-)

p.s.

in the tarbal is also included a "full" GPSTK [1] installation.
it is needed by OSSIM as dependencie,
i can cut it including only libs and headers (save 70 mb) but i prefer to leave
it untouched.
GPSTK is a great piece of sw, having it on the live is cool, if you agree i can
write documentation for it too

2010-08-05 Thread Massimo Di Stefano
hi Cameron,

seems i find a solution,

i build the software locally on a fresh xubuntu and i stored all the build in a
directory (150 mb)
i tried it on the live-gis VM and it works as aspected (it only need the
LD_LIBRARY_PATH to be setted)

tell me i can i add a replacement of install_ossim.sh to try thi procedure
unless a new debian packages will ready.

[Live-demo] Fwd: [OSGeo-Discuss] 1 week to test the OSGeo-Live DVD before we burn it

2010-08-05 Thread Massimo Di Stefano

Ossim is present on the live-dvd thanks to the ubuntu packages prepared by
Pirimin K.
testing it i can see Imagelinker is built using ossim_qt4 instead of qt3, this
give us a non-full working imagelinker :-(

right now i'm preparing a fresh VM on which i'll try to rebuild imagelinker and
ossimplanet from svn,
unlucky i have no experience building .deb ...
maybe using a cmake build "out of source" i can try to build a "static version"
for all the ossim suite.

here my question :

using cmake i'm able to choose wich part of ossim i should build
but i can't find an entry to choose between ossim_qt or ossim_qt4
i can see only ossim_qt4 [ON/OFF]

Pirimin, have you time/resource to build a new packages .deb ?

Please, i'm avaiable at any time to try to generate a new .deb
thanks to anyone who has experience on this side.

Ciao,

Massimo.

2010-07-27 Thread Massimo Di Stefano
Hi All

about raster data, look at the ossim script it already
download 3 band landsat images and the srtm data (90m)
the zone i choose is spain/barcelona

i guess this data should be easy reusable by other application.

p.s.
apologize me for the complete absence from the list (i know there is a lot of
work to do)
i had to defend my master degree thesis the last week
... i'm back :-) to help a bit for what i can

Re: [Live-demo] What dataset should your application use on the LiveDVD?

2010-06-11 Thread Massimo Di Stefano
For the ossim/imagelinker dataset i used :

landsat etm+ and srtm data for barcellona (for the foss4g 2010)

the data are downloaded from the last lines in the ossim install script.
the data i included are :

etm+ (red,green,blue)
srtm
2 sample kml files

the results is like :

http://img822.imageshack.us/f/didefault20100611a13110.png/

the data size is about 50 mb
(note, the overview and rgb image is not included, its derivation is explained
in the doc )

other data can be added, like :

infrared band to make ndvi
pan band to make pansharp

(both rgb, ndvi and pansharp images can be derived on the live itself,
including the needed steps in a tutorial)

this data are related to Barcellona,
but the same "kind of data" can be used for "sexy place" like
some nice island .. hawaii ?
or vulcanos like 'vesuvio' ?

this mail is related only to raster stuff ...
for the vector stuff we can add data like :
world coastline
world political boundaries
corine land cover
geonames database
...

what do you think about ?

Re: [Live-demo] Schedule

2010-06-09 Thread Massimo Di Stefano

Guys,

I'm really busy with my thesi, i will be finally graduated the 14 july ...
apologize me, but  i'm not having the time to test the live build process until
that date.
as i can see from the last build log, there are problems in Qgis (it has no
python support)
and there is not package for ossim on ubuntu 10.x
(i'm not able to package it, bacouse i have not experience in packaging) at
least i can build from source:-/ .. but this will require more VM resource and
space, hence i suppose is not an option for us

Pirimin_k ( nick on irc), can you provide a new ubuntu package?if yes, i
suggest to use the same svn revision you used for the 9.04 package(beacouse
imagelinker has a bug in the recent svn, i'll kep you aware if the bug will be
fixed soon)
i'll try to follow you for what i can.

thanks!

Massimo.

2010-02-12 Thread Massimo Di Stefano
On a fresh xubuntu 9.10 installation (32bit)

using a regular :

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

all works (regular virgin linux without osgeo live installation)

the VirtualBox ( .vdi ) disk image in bzip compression has size of 1Gb,

what about switch from vmware to more opensource vbox ?

Alex, i can upload the vbox image to save you from instalation time, if we want
give a try to vbox.

2010-01-29 Thread Massimo Di Stefano
Hi All,

please apologize me, i tried to be present at the irc meeting but i had "time"
problems.
i'm following allt the svn logs, as i can see i need to :
update the tarball "qgis plug-in" and check if any dependencies is needed.
now that we have ossimplanet installed i'll try to see if the gdal-ossim
plug-in works as aspected
so i can add 2 simple scripts to work with ossimplanet+grass

i'll try all the stuff locally as soon as possible,
when ready i'll sent a message to the list.

ciao!

I think postgresql 8.4+ and postgis 1.4+ are mature sw
and we need to rewrite the script to upgrade both postgresql and postgis.

note : the last time i tried the scripts on ubuntu 9.10
i found different packages that needs to be update.
i think that we need just "one time" to run each scripts manually "only the
apt-get lines"
to see which packages are obsolete so we can update the right version number
inside the install_scripts.

Alex asked for a different dvd build procedure, i think remastersys is good but
maybe non optimal ... googling
i find a "really nice" tool "pyfll"

http://sidux.com/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-t-9877-highlight-pyfll.html

unluky the only docs i find on pyfll usage is in german :

http://sidux.com/index.php?module=Wikula&tag=ISOBuilding

^^^ the last one shoul'd be a good way to follow.
is on the list a german translator :-) ?

p.s.

Ubuntu is really good for linux beginner and not) i like it.
However (for who is intersted ) i'm rworking on a "edu-verson" for osgeo live
disk.
the work to prepare it can go ahead in parallel with the foss4g-live
preparation.
To prepare it i'm porting the install_scripts to run under sidux,
i'll use the drive-space used by win/osx installer to have more space left for
tutorial, data and sw.
(Sidux is a debian sid based distro, it use the debian-gis repository with
up-to date sw-packages
it's usage in a live-edu-disk is a way to say thanks to all the debian gis
mantainers too)

i started to try the script on ubuntu9.10
some packages get updates like gdal geos and others nut i agree
this think are easy to fix.
unlucky my vm has no user = user and is 64 bit so i cant produce yet a working
report
(again .. i know, sorry .. but 64bit is too fast :-P )

i'll try from a fresh 32 bit using the right settings "user:user"

me too, i prefer to see more data yes .. and use the same data for each
application
"where applicable".

i also think that we need (after we have selected a common data set)
to work to produce different complex ans simple project-file for each
application.

So we can have beautifull project to load on the fly to demostrate
application's capability...

and not at least, having common data and "similar project-file" can also give
us a method to "evaluate" (just like a "benchmark") the different application.
(maybe an final report sounds great ... just like the osgeo-benchmark-team has
did for the web-gis rendering at foss4g 2009.)

here i've no clue ..
i'm sure that internationalizatio (localization)
is a nice target to achieve
... it is also a "good point" to see local chapters in action.

Massimo

P.S.

.. again on data, we can also pay attention to "case study" we can propone in
the project files.
i means we can focus our attention on topic that are
"intersting, up to date and dedicated to noble scopes"
.. see climate changes, earth resources , migration, war, marine biodiversity,

on 64 bit some indtaller scripts seems do not runs
i'll report more speciphic notes.

I know it, it's a great project!
from poseido i see some sw title i don't know first.
But seems the last release is dated 2008.
Maybe for educational purpose is not needed
to have the last sw version installed?

[Live-demo] OSGEO Live GIS , ideas to share

2009-12-11 Thread Massimo Di Stefano
Hi All

some ideas about the osgeo's live gis project, i'd like to know your opinion
about :

- can we fix a date to start the up-to date work needed for the install scripts
to runs on unbuntu 9.10 ?

- what about adding different architecture e.g. to have install scripts running
on "i386, x86_64, ppc" ?

- can we contact the local chapter's asking for a "tester", so we can try to
adapt the scripts to run on different localization ?
  |-- what do you think to add a directory in the svn tree : "localization"
and subdir for different language/local-chapters ... us, en, fr, it, de, ... ?

- linux and geoscience .. i'd like the idea to have on a "dedicated" osgeo live
project, not only speciphic "geo" sw, i agree the we are on Osgeo, but adding
other science sw (like plotting tools, statistic and symbolic calculus sw ..
etc ... ) can be a cool start point for an live project dedicated to an
"educational" release (in this case ,"educational-release", i vote to
eliminate the mac and win installer and give more focus (and space) on new sw,
tutorial data and documentation)

p.s.
Unlucky i'm having problems to learn how to make .deb for an official debian
package
.. i'd like the idea the osgeo live project will works for both distro "ubuntu
and debian-sid"
(i'm avaiable to spend my time to convert all the script from ubuntu to debian,
i did a lot of work on this direction)
My problem are related to the debian rules file and how to hndle the
dependence.
You know ... "make a debian official package" is not so easy.
i'm really intersted to learn more about packaging an "axample case" on how to
make .deb for a complex sw like "grass, gdal, qgis" can give me a great help.
i'm sure .. from a complex example it is possible to learn a lot of thinks.

thanks,

Massimo.

the pdf documentation.

i'll try later to write an example session file based on preinstalled examples

[Live-demo] live dvd, some questions

2009-11-27 Thread Massimo Di Stefano
Hi all,

following the mbsystem mailing-list i've notice about the existence of "not
official" .deb packages , here a link :

http://sites.google.com/site/anbadeol/debian#TOC-MB-System

i'm not able to test it under ubuntu (used in the OSGEO live dvd)
and neither on my linux beacouse i'm using a 64bit disro while the .deb is only
for 32bit

i hope to find the time to reinstall a 32 bit VM, but maybe someone on the list
can test it?

- maybe a bit OT..., but i've an other question :

Re: [Live-demo] More ideas on collaborative development

2009-08-26 Thread Massimo Di Stefano

Hi Cameron,

Massimo,
I'm interested to hear your feedback on this email.
In particular, I'm keen to determine whether the ideas proposed fit
with what you are doing, and whether we can collaborate to some level.

Little update on what i'm doing :

Actually i'm hard-working on a sidux live.iso produced by a virtualbox
VM,

doing regular update && dist-upgrade.
The sidux distro use debian-sid, sidux (including debian-gis repository)
It use the latest kernel and updated packages (i added the non-free
repository too)

For some reason i prefer to build some sw from svn source code : Gdal,
Grass, OpenScenaGraph, Ossim, Qgis, Mapserver, Mapnik, Libtiff,
Libgeotiff, GpsTK).

and other sw from tarball (pgadmin3 and some others)

""" about svn sw against stable version ... :
i prefer to have development (svn) version, in this way i can do an
intense testing process using it
in my short experience i find more bugs in the stable version rather
than the svn version (this can be not true for you .. i agree, but
this is my experience)

.
If we have time to give a look, every day, in the svn boot logs ...
for each application we are intersted for, in this way we know if
there is a commit that represent an update or a bug fix changes.
knowing the svn progress we can test the new enanchments and debug it
if/where it is possible.
in this way the sw development go ahead more fast (if we provide logs,
ticket or feedback .. using m-list and irc) and if (unlucky) a bug
come up and no solution/fix is ready we can even do svn -r "release-
without the critical bug" to checkout a good revision tagged as "svn-
stable" """

(odd : using a source build for gdal i need to build from source all
the sw that depends on it, but it ensures me to have a working gdal
version without generate conflict bettween variouse tools that uses
gdal (see gdal-grass and ossim-gdal plug-in).

What i'm including in the .iso :

- sw we have in the last osgeo dvd (need to add java apps yet, using
the free jdm and not the sun jvm)
(i agree that we need a full detailed list about the software We
want install on the live disc)

- ossim+3d stuff
- updated grass6.5 and qgis1.2 svn version (plus all the qgis-python
plug-in and some grass addons)
- other scientific sw like octave (+qt interface) and variouse
plotting tools

- R with spatial packages already installed
- gmt + mbsystem
- some FEM (finite elements) sw
- database managment sw (pgadmin3, phppgadmin)
- openoffice 3 complete suite, gimp, inkskape
- latex tools
- development kit + dev packages headers (compilers and tools like
gcc, jam, ant, scons, etc... and the needed -dev dependencies to build
sw from source)

- sidux help file in all avaiable language.

i need to add yet the java sw (geoserver, geonetwork, udig+javagrass,
josm ... others?)
here i need help and i'll give a depth look at the future scripts to
configure them.

i'm planning to add also OMAR (ossim mapping archive), OTB (Orfeo
Toolbox) and tilecache + GeoDjango

I'm installing sw from source instead of use what the debian-
repository already has beacouse :

- installing sw from svn or source tar.gz give us a distro that is
really up-to-date, and it is aslo "upgradable"
every time the user needs an upgrade, beacouse it already has all
the needed dependencies (-dev
packages) and i'll provide scripts to update configure and make the
sw installed from source.

- there are some packages (sdl, libtiff, pyqwt, pgadmin3, ... others)
with some problems and bugs

so installing from source i can avoid to have bugus sw installed

I choose sidux instead of debian stable or ubuntu beacouse :

- it has more updated packages and it is a stabilized sidux distro

- using sidux it already install in the .iso some virtualizzation
tools that give us :
in a VirtualBox Machine, just select the sidux.iso in virtualbox as
bootable device and the VM will have
expanding desktop and 3d environment ready to use in the VM (ose
version)

(the downloaded iso is about 450 mb, it is really thin)
starting from it id done a apt-get update apt-get dist-upgrade (adding
the non-free repository too)
i added script to rebuild the SW installed from source. the final .iso
size is near 2.3 gb

I'm hoping that the install scripts that we write for each project
which target Xubuntu will be useful for your sidux development, and
that you will be in a position to write some of the install scripts,
and or test what we have written.

For sure, i can test the scripts without problems and adapt it to
works on sidux.
I need help for the java apps beacouse i never used it too much i'm
able to install Geonetwork and Geoserver (based on tomcat)... but i
never configured it to works on data (step needed to have a working
geoserver/geonetwork demo).

For openlayer+Tilecache+Mapnik+ Osm(including tools like osm2pgsql and
mapnik rendering)) i can ask on the relative #i

Re: [Live-demo] LiveDVD from GISVM?

2009-08-12 Thread Massimo Di Stefano

Hi Cameron,

this is the way i'm following.

i'm using a linux distro installed on a VM (virtualbox)
then from it i create the live.iso using remastersy basckup utility.

i had to hack a bit remastersy to have it working on sidux too.

why sidux :
sidux has already preinstalled a virtual environment,
so when you start the live.iso inside a VM
it will have the "base" virtualbox addition already Working.

This means :
- mouse can go outside the vm screen
- 3d sw ( like ossimplanet) working in a live session
- screen expanding.. etc

but i also had, in the live.iso desktop, a ditrectory with the
virtualbox addition installer.
it is needed beacouse any upgrade that touch the kernel ... needs a
new virtualbox addition installation.

i have an updated live.iso disk image, i uploaded it to darkblue_b
(irc frrenode)
to a berkeley univ. computer so him can do simple test and see if all
works as aspected
(the live do not has all the geo-sw installed, beacouse i need that it
go under testing first.
if we don't have boot and driver problems, i can go ahead to customize
it)

tell me if you want try it, let me know if i can upload it to you.

ciao,

Massimo.

 exists)
to figure out this problem i commented out the relative "if statment"
to check the module presence.

after this littlle hack i have remastersys "semi-working" on sidux too.
the live-dvd produced has a working gis software (also 3d with
ossimplanet) but unluky the script fails to configure the network
(resolvconf problems)

and it has missed the "install to hd" tools.
(i'm subsribed to the remastersys forum and i'm tring to get support
about this problem)

in short word :

using debian or ubuntu i'm not able to have a really platform
independent 3d environment but i have an installable live-dvd

while on sidux i have all working in live-mode except to the
resolvconf-dhcp problem (i'll meet a server-mantainers in the next
days to face out this problem)

again the live is not yet installable on HD (i'm tring to solve this
on the remastersys forum).

5. Add what ever new packages, linux software, windows installers,
etc to the LiveDVD. This is the technical grunt work.
Note that the packaging projects like DebianGIS and UbuntuGIS are
quite robust, and have been very helpful in getting new people
started with packaging, and many of these people are also on the
LiveDVD email list.

i've discuss about the osgeo live-dvd project on our local-chapter
list, we'll be avaiable to produce a local dataset and localized
documents.

my idea is to use as example data a common dataset based on global
data + a localized dataset based on local-free data if avaiable.
however we need a common tutorial/how-to workshop files to follow as
guide-line for the local chapters.

just a littel consideration maybe is is obviouse,
i'm tring the variouse .iso produced and is my idea that the live.iso
works really more fast if it is booted in a virtualbox machine
i do some test on the live.iso, i find that running it in a VirtualBox
Machine, it is really fast rather than a boot from cd.

thanks to read this long-confuse mail and for any feedback.

Hi Ravi,

Yes, you are so right, we do need to collect as much of the

One way we hope to facilitate this has been to give every

material from the workshops. This means that if workshop
presenters can get their data onto the DVD, then they know
all attendees will receive it.

So we have budget for the LiveDVD. We have an old version
of the LiveDVD (based on FOSS4G 2008). What we need to
continue through to completion is to have someone who will
coordinate the compiling of the DVD. This is primarily a
project management role, keeping track of what is on the DVD

updated version of the live-dvd) the one you download is a bit outdated the
user and password try this :

user : sasha
password : tiamo

or

user : sasha
password : gfoss

a new releasy is ready with some bug fix, it is ever based on ubuntu 9.04 32bit.

but ...
i agree with the last post on the list to avoid works duplication ...

have a common environment (basic .iso) and works on a
OSGEO-repository (for both dependences, applications (stable+devel),  and
custom scripts (like : install geo-packages for R, apt-get for common used sw
in geoscience, localization for tutorials e data) ... and much more)
is the better way to go.

i'm not a good packager (i only used checkinstall for now)
i think that as distro i'll prefer to use a debian sid based distro (right now
i'm tring sidux and it is really cool ... as example : grass6.4 in the packages)

so we can use the debian-gis packages and works all together to make debian-gis
ever better, avoiding duplication.

i'll come back on line the next week (i'm studing for exams)
so we can discuss many of thes arguments

regards,

Massimo.

I think I forgot to write down the username/passwords for your live
disc, could you post them to the list so it's online where people can
find it.

Thanks,
Alex

[Live-demo] a new Live-DVD (still alpha ... needs feedback ;-))

2009-04-14 Thread massimo di stefano

Hi All,

i'm working on a live-dvd,
the live is based on ubuntu 9.04
it icludes some sw form the official repository, to satisfy the needed
dependancies while for the main GIS sw i used svn version [x]

a description of what is included in the iso.alpha is avaiable here [xx]
i'll think to stabilize it after the official ubuntu 9.04 is released.

I know that to produce an other copy of cd/dvd live is not a good
think, while we need a collaborative work on a common project

i done these work by myself , to learn, and for the italian community
(we'll use these dvd as free - gadget distributable in conference or
any events where gfoss will be implicated)
i'll hope to merge all the needed knowledge in a common project with
all the osgeo people, so we can do a better job.
i agree that we need a common repository and a "packages-builder
system" to produce .deb for our needs (on these side i need to learn
more yet)

Please, download it and do some test, comments suggestions, any
feedback, well be appreciated.

[x]
i preferred to use svn version (i know it isn't a common chice)
but i prefer to have an ins allable live-dvd
using svn code i can update it without some efforts (just svn-up, and
configure & make)
the idea to have the code installed from source is derived by the
needs to compile addons,
demostrating in class rooms how to work with svn, compile source,
update .. debug etc

link to the project are avaiable from :
