I've seen similar arrangements, and like the idea quite a bit; unfort,

just welding one up, if I can figure out the measurements. A single wide
hook at the bottom plus a 40 over-center clamp, with the whole thing
clamped to an upright on the pushpit sounds just right.

Yep, this one's one of them stupid expensive stainless units. Were I in
the market for one now, I'd probably just make my own and save a decent
pile of cash, but at the time I didn't have the tools (or skills) handy
yet, and was too damned busy already renovating the galley to accept the
oven and stove that the propane was installed for (and plumbing in the
gas lines, and...)

If I get a break in the next few days, I may try and either make you a

A pic and measurements would be awesome. Thanks, Kris!

Measurements will have to wait at least a week until I get back home,
but I got a friend to take some pictures recently, and she posted them
at:

(And yes, that's a 1lb bottle hanging from the BBQ in spite of the
apparently-disused Y on the tank's valve. The tank-BBQ hose got leaky
recently, and I still wanted to grill things, so I pulled out one of the
emergency spare bottles that are supposed to be for hooking to the
steak saver)

Cheers,
Kris

The price is certainly right, Ben. But I'm curious where you'd be mounting
them. I know you mention rail mounting but I can see the load swinging
once you're underway. It's one thing to have a static load (20#) but once
the natural movement of the boat takes over that 20# static load starts a
pendulum motion I'm guessing that would put stress on the clamps that they
weren't designed for. Just a thought.

In terms of an alternative, I've see purpose-designed propane tank boxes
(designed to fit the tank into and also providing a drainage hole at the
bottom for any stray leakage) people have either mounted to their deck if
there's space, or in one case, screwed to the transom.

Just ran across this while looking for a way to mount a 20# propane
bottle to my railing (still thinking; suggestions welcome):

This may or may not work for propane, but these seem like they would be
really handy for a number of things on board.

Re: [Liveaboard] Cool gadget

2012-08-07 Thread Kris Coward

For my 10# propane tank (and I'm sure it'd accomodate a 20# easily),
I've got a pair of stainless tubes bent into L shapes, with some plates
welded to them on the upright sections, holding them parallel and a few
inches apart. There are pegs sticking out of the bottom sections that
catch/hold the ring at the bottom of the tank so that it doesn't slide
off. The plates clamp to one of the stanchions attached to the railing,
and there's a hook-shaped piece of sheet metal with a machine screw in
it that a nut gets tightened on, in order to pull the ring/handles at
the top of the propane tank towards the uppermost of the 2 welded-on
plates.

I don't have a working camera right now, or I'd take pictures for you.
If I get a break in the next few days, I may try and either make you a
drawing, or identify the manufacturer..

Cheers,
Kris

P.S. Just took a peek out at it, and there's a third plate holding the
bottom sections together too.
