Both are well worth watching. I have both on DVD, although my High Fidelity
DVD doesn't work, and I now face the interesting task of returning it to
Amazon.com, and persuading them to resend me a copy to the UK (I originally
got it delivered to the address I was staying at in Boston to save on the

This is a much more borderline case. It did open in the UK in Nov 99, but
didn't come to Northern Ireland until December... so my first UK viewing
of it was January.

I'd be willing to drop this from my 2000 list though as it did actually
open in 99.

Yeah, but most of this year's "Oscar Contenders" haven't opened in the UK yet

I haven't actually managed to see The Perfect Storm. However, this
is mostly through choice.

On the other hand, O Brother Where Art Thou is an excellent film, and
Clooney is actually really good in it.

I haven't made my Top 10 of 2000 yet. My main problem with this kind of
list is deciding what's allowed to go in. For example I saw American
Beauty, Fight Club, The Straight Story, Boys Don't Cry and Being John
Malkovich in 1999, even though they didn't open in the UK until 2000. I'd
still like to put them in my 2000 list though, as this hasn't been as
good a year for movies IMO. (Plus I also haven't seen most of this year's
big releases: Gladiator, Perfect Storm, Toy Story 2, Chicken Run, X-Men,
What Lies Beneath, Scary Movie, The Grinch, etc). I also missed most of
this year's big arthouse movies (Ghost Dog, Requiem For a Dream, Dancer
in the Dark etc), so my list is going to be skewed by that as well...

Off the cuff, my list would probably be (allowing for the fact that I've
almost certainly forgotten some major films that should be here...)

 1. Being John Malkovich
 2. Fight Club
 3. High Fidelity
 4. American Beauty
 5. O Brother Where Art Thou
 6. Boiler Room
 7. The Straight Story
 8. Boys Don't Cry
 9. Billy Elliot
10. Erin Brokovich

Worst Film of the Year (original story) award goes to Topsy-Turvy.

Worst Film of the Year (remake) award goes to Michael Almereyda's Hamlet.

Longest Time To Recognise Major Actor in Major Part award goes to Gary Oldman
in The Contender.

Getting keys of mapped hash?

2001-01-02 Thread Tony Bowden

OK, my brain has fried.

How can I do this:

  my @list = qw/foo bar foo baz/;
  my %hash = map { $_ => 1 } @men;
  my @sort = sort keys %hash;
print "We have @sort\n"; # foo bar baz

without the %hash?

i.e. something akin to: my @sort = sort keys map { $_ => 1 } @list;

I've tried so many variations that my brain is refusing to tell me the
correct answer.

Ah, but my question was badly phrased. I needed to end up with @sort, not
a printed list ...

The result of this was heading towards another couple of maps ;)

I had found the solution long before this turned up though (stupidly
forgot to update my .muttrc for the new list address, so I had to go
through moderation again ...) - just a matter of doubling those curly
brackets (no need for all those +s etc...)

We're looking for someone (or possibly sometwo, but probably only
someone), for a very senior position - in the 35k+ range. (That's
an NI salary - not sure what the equivalent London salary would be).

i.e. someone more senior than our current seniors, who would be
responsible for working on deep core stuff, as well as training/reviewing
the current senior and junior programmers...

The information is factual. Factual information cannot be

OK ... when I said "there's nothing they can do", I of course meant
there's nothing they can do if you're prepared to actually fight them
in court, not "they can't send you threatening legal letters that
actually carry no legal weight".

There's nothing at that page to suggest that CIN were doing anything
other than throwing their weight around just to scare someone off.
Which is what companies do all the time.

I paid thousands of pounds for legal advice on this very issue (albeit
about 5 years ago), and the opinion I got was "factual information
cannot be copyrighted - only the arrangement of it". The classic case is
someone who retypes a phone book. You can't reissue it in the same order
(i.e. alphabetic by surname) as the original, but you could quite happily
order it numberic by phone number and no-one could do anything...

Aha ... the geek paralysis.

Surely part of the reason that so much bad code gains so much popularity
is that bad coders tend to think their code is good, so don't mind
publicising it and shouting about it lots. Good coders, on the other hand,
think that their code is always bad, so are reluctant to do much with it.
