Wifi will not work as you cannot boot from it. You need cabled ethernet.

2012-07-04 Thread Abraham Close
Hello,

So I just found out that my school will have to use LTSP over wifi
because of costs. I have some questions:
How will I do this?
Will it be cheaper to use ethernet?
What hardware specs do I need?

Thanks,

This runs fine with any Linux distro and any LTSP version. The server
has GBit Ethernet, but I haven't even used it yet, just 100 MBit
 switches all over the place.

There have been no bottlenecks so far, and I would expect any slightly
smaller server to be able to feed your T40s and T60s, especially as they
will do most of the job (Firefox?) themselves.

We have ca. 50 THIN clients (2 labs + some groups and single ones)

It sounds like your requirements for a switch are minimal. Buy the
cheapest, they are all the same at the entry-level. Buy 2 because they are
cheap and LTSP will utterly fail if the switch fails.

I am not knowledgeable about SSDs, but buying one that exceeds the speed of
the SATA controllers in your T40 and T60 (SATA1 1.5gbps as near as I can
tell) is probably a waste. You will be better off buying a server with
SATA2.

Hello,

Thanks for all of the replies! Is this a good network switch:

And what about this ssd:

I don't think so (so, you should probably do fat clients in your
case). If I understand right, your clients are just as powerfull as
the intended servers (same machines, right ?).

So you should probably not divide the server power between clients
which are themselves as powerfull : you will waste clients ressources
in this case.

By doing fat clients, you still benefit from the centralized setup
that LTSP provide (only one installation for whatever clients you
have).

> And what network switch do you recommend for 20 clients?

A Gigabit one (with at least 20 ports). I like Netgear switches, but
the brand should not matter.

I don't know.

Basicaly, you should try to get enterprise class SSD (SLC vs. MLC).
Intel's ones have good reputation in the past, but I don't know if
it's still true.

I've always found Netgear switches to provide good value for the
money. The GS724T is my workhorse, but you might want something with
more ports.

OCZ is my choice for consumer SSD, but if you go fat clients with nfs
home directories then you may want to look at something with SLC.

You select the entry saying "Network boot" or "PXE boot" in the BIOS
of the machine.

It will then get network parameters (IP, etc.) from your DHCP server
and download what is needed to boot (kernel and ramdisk) from your
TFTP server.

Fat clients are a good way to go because they take less from a server,
however they are more difficult to control in a classroom environment.
The new fat client system with 12.04 looks very exciting.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ltsp-pnp
I think you should check out the cluster server setup for a thin client
setup to start off.
Yes you need a switch and all the wiring .
I have setup quite a few Tuxlabs and have documented it all . Email me at

Further on that, you can only PXE boot computers over an Ethernet
connection, so it must be connected at all times. You are talking
about T40 and T60 laptops, but it will be impossible to make them
mobile with LTSP over wireless, you'd need to install the Linux distro
to hard disk.

Otherwise, if you are running them as fat clients, with a spare one
used as an LTSP server, I could see you being able to support 20
clients.

Gigabit for fat clients, fast ethernet for thin clients.

David,

Thanks for the help guys. Just one question I don't understand: Do I
need a network switch to connect the clients to the server or is it
done wirelessly?

Thanks,
Abraham Close

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] Computer Lab with LTSP

2012-05-29 Thread Abraham Close
Jay,

7 clients connected to a server comes from the fact the T60s have a
limited amount of computing power to sustain 7 clients. At least thats
what I read from a guide by Edubuntu. BTW, thanks for the fast answer.
Now my only question now is: how do I connect the clients to a server?
I have heard that I need a network switch. Still lost on that subject.

Thanks,
Abraham Close

I think you'll find that one capable server can handle many more than
7 clients in most circumstances. Since the server's only real workload
is to feed files to the clients, I would be inclined to procure a
modest server and focus my resources on disk speed. With 100 clients
sharing the server's nfs resources, you would do well to use
enterprise SSD or at least SSD caching if it's in your budget.

If you followed that guide then you should be able to PXE-boot your
client and and clients will boot and have whatever software bundle you
created in the chroot.

Re: [Ltsp-discuss] Computer Lab with LTSP

2012-05-29 Thread Jay Goldberg
Not sure where this '7' number is coming from...

But, the way that fat clients work is that they boot the same central
root OS from a central server, and execute that OS using local
resources. Once a user logs in, the LTSP login manager will
automatically mount directories from the central server that are
supposed to be persistent, ie if jdoe logs in, /home/jdoe is mounted
and the jdoe sees his/her files just like if he/she logs in on any of
the LTSP clients, whether fat/thin.
