To all who are annoyed at my post, take a look at it this way:

1. I labelled it "Off Topic", so if you didn't want to read it you had ample
warning and you could have just deleted the message
2. Its an issue that affects everyone in the US, and therefore I felt that
everyone I know might be able to benefit from the information
3. There was no flamebait in the message.

If you really are that angry, then I am sorry. If you really are that angry,
you didn't need to tie up even more time on this list voicing your anger.

I think most of us look at it this way.

1. You can't just warn people your about to break a rule and expect that to
make it OK.
2. There are millions of issues going on that affect everyone in the US.
We are informed. This LUG is in place because of issues relating to open
source. It is not up to you to decide what other issues you think we need
to be informed on.
3. Off topic, controversial posts are flame bait. That should be evident
by the amount of annoyed members replying to you publicly and privately.

Like I said in my private reply, please think twice before deliberately
posting this far off topic. You damage the quality of LUAU when you do
this.

Respectfully, again,

Cody,

I appreciate your comments. There was no intent to make anyone angry or
to cause controversy. I merely wished to let people know about an important
issue.

Some comments:

True enough. However, for me, it's the political
nature of your email that was annoying. There are
plenty of ways to express those views without posting
them to a list that has a very well-defined and
specific _technical_ purpose.

I think it's a stretch to think that simply labeling
an email Off Topic gives one the license to post
political messages. IMHO, politics, just by its
nature, does not belong in this forum.

> 2. Its an issue that affects everyone in the US, and

There are any number of political issues that someone
may decide affects the entire nation. Those don't
belong here either.

OK. It's clear that you feel strongly about this and
were doing what you felt was the right thing. Problem
is, that others might feel just as strongly with the
exact opposite view. Should they now respond making
sure they carefully label it "Off Topic"?

Hope not. Please keep this stuff off.

Well, responding through the forum makes it clear to
others that some of us don't want to see this type of
thing here.

[luau] Kernal Sources with Debian

2003-07-15 Thread Matthew John Darnell
Aloha,

Can anyone tell me how to get the kernal sources on a Debian system? I am
compiling a program that needs them.

I can find packages with apt-get and looking on apt-get.org but I can't see
how to download the kernal sources.

Thanks,
Matt

I usually just get them from kernel.org and throw them in /usr/src/linux (which
is usually where a program will look if it needs the full kernel sources for
whatever reason).

apt-cache search kernel-source kernel-package

There are HOWTOs that show how to compile the kernel,
Debian-style, and actually build a deb for it via make-kpkg.

It is when you can get GRE, IPSEC, or vserver patches that are
known to merge cleanly against a recent kernel.

Another advantage of make-kpkg is that it wraps all the extra
commands you need to build and install a kernel.

You can still download the kernel source from a debian mirror and
skip the make-kpkg part. The only difference from grabbing from
kernel.org would be that less keystrokes are involved.

I do not endorse the following, I was only asked to post it to the

Hi All, I have been off the list for quite some time but I really need your
help. My boss has asked me to buy one laptop wants it to be top of the line
and said I can spend up to $6000 dollars to buy it. He also gave me $2000
dollars to buy two flat screen monitors. Any suggestions. Vendor is no
problem. We do want to get the most for our money and he would like to get
a dvd burner even if it has to be external. Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks Jeff Zidek
