[Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu documentation
In trying to learn more about Lubuntu, especially the commands and applications for it, I find the sources pretty sparse. For example, I am still using 'sudo aptitude update sudo aptitude safe-upgrade' to update Lubuntu and wondering if that is correct. Also while the command 'gksudo leafpad' is given here on the list (thanks), it is difficult to find out other useful commands. The links given on the https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu page and other LXDE sites are not too informative either. Of course being a new 'distro', I could understand, but can someone provide more links so that a newbie like me can pick up some speed? Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu documentation
Yes: sudo aptitude update sudo aptitude safe-upgrade is an appropriate way to upgrade your system at CLI the command: gksudo leafpad is the way to run leafpad as root, do NOT use sudo with GUI apps as you can damage file ownerships as sudo does not setup the environment correctly. Otherwise Lubuntu is no different to Ubuntu, it just has a different set of default apps and a different default desktop (LXDE instead of Gnome) so any guide you can find on Ubuntu will work. This is the same for KUbuntu which uses KDE instead of Gnome and XUbuntu which uses XFCE instead of Gnome. They are all Ubuntu under the hood. Unlike Windows you can change your desktop environment very easily in Linux and that is all that has changed to the system, what is under the hood is exactly the same as all the other official releases. Are there any applications (not on the default install) for Lubuntu on the repositories that is specific to Lubuntu *without* pulling in gnome or kde dependencies which might otherwise bloat the nicely balanced Lubuntu setup? I don't want to get to the Xubuntu situation where additional applications tend to make it as unwieldy as the heavyweights. For example, (I think) I could install Opera, Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice, Konqueror or Knode which I use in Kubuntu and I am familiar with, but (I think) that will make Lubuntu heavier and slower to run, which I don't want to do.
