Ah, right. OK. But since you already had the threat about it open, why
start a new one?

Also... general rule. If you hit a problem or weirdness with Linux,
the _first_ thing to do is Google it.

Here is the *first hit* for:

virtualbox ubuntu screen corruption

https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/13615

... which has a screenshot almost identical to yours, and tells you
how to get around it.

So does the 2nd hit:

Also, please log in to Launchpad with an UbuntuOne account and mark

I then, from the Network Manager applet, click

This is true, but EIDE and SATA drives use Logical Block Addressing --
the on-drive circuitry remaps requests to actual blocks on disk. It is
normal in such drives that the drive itself detects and remaps bad
blocks, and drives reserve some spare capacity for such remapping.

This means that the OS should never see any bad blocks at all. The
drive should remap and hide them.

So, if any appear, it's because the drive has so many bad blocks that
all the reserve capacity has been exhausted. This almost always means
that the drive has severe physical damage to the medium, and as such,
is probably on the brink of failure.

Summary: if you format a drive and it reports any bad blocks at all,
don't use it. Replace it immediately. If it's new, get a warranty
replacement; if it's old, discard it.

AFAICR: if you make the media with UNetbootin, you get a text version

asks in graphics with big buttons.

OK, I have now confirmed this with Lubuntu 16.04.1/32and VirtualBox
5.1 hosted on Mac OS X.

Neill, again, this is *not* a problem with your machine. It is with VirtualBox.

I have also confirmed that the workaround I gave does resolve the
problem: switch to a text console and back and the display is fine and
you can use it.

Also, I have confirmed that Lubuntu is VM aware and mouse integration works.

The "nomodeset" kernel parameter does not change it.

I have added it to this bug report:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox/+bug/1379062

I suggest that anyone affected also signs in to Launchpad and marks
that it affects them as well. Even if you need to create an UbuntuOne
account. The more people that mark this bug as affecting them, the
more the chances that it will be examined.

You make a persistent ISO as you write it to the media.

How are you doing that?

I find UNetBootIn is the easiest. It's in the repositories.

As I replied to Neil R's question on this:

[Copied & Pasted]

Apply the standard Linux steps for display corruption: switch to text
mode and back.

I.e., Ctrl-Alt-F1 to go to a text vconsole, and then Ctrl-Alt-F7 back
to the X.org screen.

If you're running in VirtualBox, then as you should already know,
these keystrokes go to the host OS, so you need to use the VBox host
key instead of Ctrl-Alt.

I did this, the display cleared, I installed as normal, updated, and
all was well. I then installed the VBox guest additions so I got an
accelerated display.

This is Neil's point as well. It is an issue but there are 2 possible answers:

[a] Google for help

[b] Try a different Linux

Either should work!

Well, yes, that is a 3rd. :-(

Hmm. How did you make your bootable media?

I am downloading another copy to try it myself.

Also, what version of VBox are you using? 5.1 is out now. You can
either download it from the website, or add the repositories and
install it that way (which is preferable and means you get automatic
updates.) The version in the *buntu repositories works but it is a bit
dated.

Hi Liam,

i'll reply in-line (and try to make less typos this time)

But the LiveCD doesn't have guest additions inside.

Not sure. Some live media are VM-aware.

Ok! Ehm Is Lubuntu VM aware?? Maybe there is an issue regarding VBOX?
i'll dig around and try to fin

And this still doen't explain why
- the LIVE environment runs in 649x480
- the installer runs in 800x600

They don't for me. Same resolution.

H Is your VBOX on Windows, Mac or Linux?
Mine is running on Lubuntu.

Both without any guest additions

:-)

not sure what i'm missing...

I can't install Guest additions in a LiveCD, can I?

Tricky. Might be possible, actually, if you create a Live USB key with
persistent storage, add the graphics drivers and *don't reboot*, just
restart X.org.

I've done this successfully with an Ubuntu Live USB on bare metal but
with an nVidia display that didn't work usably without proprietary
drivers. It was tricky but it did work.

Hehe now i need to think.. how do i boot a persistent ISO in VBOX?
You mean i need to flash an ISO with pwersistence on a phisical USB and
then boot the VM from that USB?

I hadn't concidered that option yet. :-D I'll give it a try

the Guest Additions are only for the VM. A live CD runs in the VM, but
i

cant install Guest Additions before i boot.

hehe what am i not seeing here?

Well, mainly, what does it matter what res it runs at? Install it and
then you'll never see it again, so why is it important?

Because the 640x480 resolution does not display correct in my case.
And since others also have issues when trying to run a Live CD in a VM
... Well could this be related??
in 640x480 i see something like 1280x480 all garbled. Unusable to work
with.
If people cant view a LiveCD in a VM that's not very conveniant for
them. I mean people try LiveCD's to see how they work before they
install the OS, If the live CD does not work, then they skip the OS and
try something else.
OR they get frustrated and bash into this mail list etc.
Understandable but sometimes annoying. And we might be missing the point
of their frustrations. (A bit like Monty Pythons dead parrot sketch)

But OK, so VBOX does not force this, aaah ofcourse, the installer also
manages to run in 800x600, so why doesnt the Live environment then use
800x600... The installer manages to use 800x600 straight from the boot
menu.

For me, it boots into the GUI *then* it asks whether you want to
install or try. I am curious what you are doing that is different.

AH

wait

It boots into the menu, there we can choose to load LIVE or INSTALL

When i load LIVE, then i get a garbled 640x480 resolution stretched to
1280x480.

when i load the INSTALLER then the installer displays correctly in
800x600 mode.

You see? The LIVE section trips over some bug.. That's what i try to
point out

My appologies if this was not clear. Explaining a bug is probably just
as hard as fixing it.

If you want clear images and better performance you must install Guest
Additions when using VirtualBox.
I'm not telling you this, it is written on VBox Manuals:
https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch04.html

Citing: "They consist of device drivers and system applications that
optimize the guest operating system for better performance and usability.
(...)
While the virtual graphics card which VirtualBox emulates for any guest
operating system provides all the basic features, the custom video drivers
that are installed with the Guest Additions provide you with extra high and
non-standard video modes as well as accelerated video performance.
"

Hope this clears this matter...

I also told you how to fix this already.

Re: [lubuntu-users] 16.04.1 32 Live VBOX

2016-08-10 Thread scrooyahoo
So this could eventually be a VBOX issue and not be caused by Lubuntu?
(to make things more complicated?)

Now going to ask the duck about Matromu.. never heard of it before

Im guessing VBOX's 640x480 mode is flawed. what about using 800x600 as
default? Still that would then rule out any 640x480 displays for now...
but is that really a problem? I mean do 640x480 displays still exist?

For older hardware it sure would be nice to have that resolution, though
i doubt that anyone actually will connect a screen like that in a world
thats flooded with phased-out 17" and 19" office displays.

i dont have a real 640x480 display, but it would be nice to give this a
try and see if that actually would work.

BTW why does VBOX pick 640x480 in LIVECD but 800x600 in the installer?
Or is this dictated by the LIVECD?

The Live environment uses a wrong resolution, but the installer

The installer runs in 800x600 resolution on VBOX

I also has something similair when trying Debian live CD in VBOX the
other day. Not sure how much bugs there are in VBOX...

[lubuntu-users] 16.04.1 32 on a Compaq EVO d530

2016-08-10 Thread scrooyahoo

I popped a USB stick into a EVO d530 and booted.

i picked try Lubuntu without installing and then the phone rang... And i
also made a cup of tea. And totally forgot about the machine. Then when
I came back and sat down, all of a sudden i see boot messages and the
desktop loads...

So it just took a VERY long time to get trough the boot process. On this
P4 with HT.

Now going to install to HD...

Meanwhile I'm going slightly crazy with so many different machines. :-)

Re: [lubuntu-users] Trouble installing 16.04 via live USB, hard drive prob?

2016-08-10 Thread Marlon Ng
Thanks guys, appreciate the help. My problem is solved. It seems I should
have formatted the partition first before installing. But it also seems
like the live USB had something to do with the installation problem as
well. (I created another live USB using the latest 16.04.1).

Sorry for the confusion, I meant "clean install", NOT clean upgrade. I do
know the meanings and the difference between clean install and upgrade.

The disk is 1TB, but the partition for lubuntu installation is 40gb only.
Before the installation (or right after formatting the partition to ext4),
800mb of space was already used up. I asked if the 800mb initial used
space is normal.

The "Try Lubuntu without installing" did NOT work indeed, only the "Install
Lubuntu". I know because I tried it. That's why I created another live
USB, but this time with 16.04.1 (the latest). So now both tasks are
possible.

Anyway, moot points. The system is working.

Thanks again guys!
