I just googled your thought, and found "Core Duo" is 32 bit, "Core 2 Duo"
is 64 bit . . . so depending upon that data is where that decision lies.
It's possible that a "mac specific" file might be needed, on my 09 MBPro
C2D processor I can use "amd64" . . . but, what is needed is to indeed see
the "EFI boot" image when booting up using the alt key--select that one for
the install.

Other question is, what machine and OS are you using to burn the DVD, as DU
isn't "friendly" to ".iso" . . . whereas Brasero or some linux based system
has no problem. If you are using OSX to burn the DVD it's best to change
the .iso to .dmg --then it should burn OK.

Other question, basic question, was the file checksum number checked?
Generally it has to match or there will be problems along the line.

Re: [lubuntu-users] install problem on MacBook C2D 2007

2017-11-30 Thread Israel
Hi again.

I used to have one of those 07 MBP laptops, though I was at least the
3rd (or fourth) owner, and received it because it had some issues...
It would not boot nicely with any image, except for the Mac specific
ones, and the NVidia graphics card was most annoying (no working
nouveau, you need proprietary drivers, which are usually not as good as
nouveau is).

Here is the wiki page I wrote about it 3 years ago:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro3-1/Trusty

It is for model number: A1229

For other models look here:

I just realized my goof, that link is *NOT* the Mac specific image, sorry

*THIS LINK is:*
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/14.04/release/lubuntu-14.04-desktop-amd64+mac.iso
*
14.04* is the*last version* with a Mac specific build.

The older Macs have a strange hybrid system that is a bit troublesome.
14.04 was the last version I was able to boot on that model.
So I simply installed it and upgraded to 16.04.  There is probably
another way you can hack the ISO image, or perhaps using rEFInd will
allow you more control of the boot process, though IIRC there were still
issues I faced trying to boot a more modern 64bit ISO.
Later Macs do NOT have this issue, regular amd64 images have the right
EFI setup on the ISO to boot them nicely.

Here is a link to rEFInd
http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/
This is a fork of the older rEFIt.
It is a bit troublesome to setup the first time, but works well once you
get it all setup.

Yes this is very important, thanks for adding this in.

My labtop has 119GB SSD hard drive with 8GB of RAM. When I install

Look like you send twice... Because the Linux use the swap space to connect the
memory and hard disk as bridge, it not necessary, but if you have swap space
better then not have it.

No swap or a swap much smaller than nowadays common RAM sizes might
cause issues to those who want to suspend to disk/hibernate ;).
