Lack of Lubuntu package testcases for wily

2015-08-06 Thread Simon Quigley
I recently started doing QA for Lubuntu, and I have noticed that not
many people(none at this point in time for that matter) do the package
QA testing. I took to the #lubuntu-devel IRC and wxl suggested that I
send this email.

There is a lack of individuals working on QA package testing for
Lubuntu. Now, I am a teen and since my parents are divorced, and my
wily machine is at my mother's apartment, I wouldn't mind some help so
we can make this move along the testing for wily.

The link is here:

The theory of upgrading from 14.04 to 15.04 using /etc/apt/sources.list

2015-08-09 Thread Simon Quigley
Has anyone ever tried upgrading right to 15.04 by just editing
/etc/apt/sources.list and replacing where it says trusty with vivid, then
doing sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade?

Does it work? If it doesn't work, why?

Hi,

Maybe we can have some QA testers do some benchmarks side-by-side(in VMs)
and see, first of all, what is preferred, and second of all, what is faster
running with the same circumstances.

I usually recommend:

   - KiwiIRC for a web-based client
   - Pidgin for a desktop client(Linux, that is)

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) released

2016-04-21 Thread Simon Quigley
Thanks to all the hard work from our contributors, we are pleased to
announce that Lubuntu 16.04 LTS has been released! With the codename
Xenial Xerus, Lubuntu 16.04 LTS is the 10th release of Lubuntu, and
the second long term support release. Lubuntu 16.04 LTS will be
supported until April 2019, with three years of support.

WHAT IS LUBUNTU?

Lubuntu is a flavor of Ubuntu based on the Lightweight X11 Desktop
Environment (LXDE), as its default GUI. The goal is to provide a very
lightweight distribution, with all the advantages of the Ubuntu world
(repositories, support, etc.). Lubuntu is targeted at "normal" PC and
laptop users running on low-spec hardware. Such users may not know how
to use command line tools, and in most cases they just don't have
enough resources for all the bells and whistles of the "full-featured"
mainstream distributions. With many LXDE components, Lubuntu[1] also
uses well-known applications, such as Firefox, Openbox, Pidgin, to
name a few. The Lubuntu project wiki[2] contains more information on
the project.

WHERE CAN I DOWNLOAD IT?

On the Ubuntu cdimage server[3], we have images for the following architectures:

- amd64 (commonly referred to as 64-bit)
- i386 (commonly referred to as 32-bit)
- PowerPC (Macintosh images)

The release notes[4] are here if you wish to read them. We have left
out some notes that are common to all flavors, so read the Ubuntu
release notes if you wish.

WHAT’S IMPROVED SINCE 15.10?

- General bug fix release as we prepare to switch to LXQt.
- Many LXDE components have been updated with bug fixes.
- The artwork has been updated with more icons, theme updates, a new
wallpaper, etc.

WHAT’S IMPROVED SINCE 14.04?

- Many under-the-hood improvements, such as the replacement of
upstart with systemd. More information is available in the Ubuntu
release notes linked above.
- A significant amount of LXDE bug fixes and improvements.
- Massive artwork improvements.
- lubuntu-extra-sessions: In the past, selecting different sessions
(netbook, gaming etc.) was installed by default. This is now an
optional extra that can be installed by those who want this added
functionality.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Lubuntu is a good operating system for many old computers, but not for
all of them. Some computers have too little horsepower or memory. A
rule of thumb is that the computer should not be more than 10 years
old.

Memory (RAM)

For advanced internet services like Google+, YouTube, Google Drive,
and Facebook, your computer needs at least 1 GB of RAM. For local
programs like LibreOffice and simple browsing habits, your computer
needs at least 512 MB of RAM.

Processor (CPU)

The minimum specification for CPU is Pentium 4 or Pentium M or AMD K8.
Older processors are too slow and AMD K7 has problems with flash
video.

Graphics

Nvidia, AMD/ATI/Radeon and Intel work out of the box, or the system
can be tweaked to work fairly easily. You can get help at the Ubuntu
Forums[6]. With such graphics, or if you don't know, try the current
Lubuntu version.

HOW DO I GET SUPPORT?

Our support channel is #lubuntu on IRC[7]. If you don’t have an IRC
client, click the link in the earlier sentence, type in a nickname,
press start, state your question and press Enter to speak. We also
have the lubuntu-users mailing list. You do not need to subscribe to
the mailing list to ask a question. Send an email to lubuntu-users AT
lists DOT ubuntu DOT com.

HOW DO I CONTRIBUTE?

We always need more help! If you would like to contribute, head over
to our Getting Involved page[8]. We need help with Reporting bugs,
Translations, Tests/QA, Code & patches, Artwork, Documentation, and
Marketing/Press. If you have any questions about contributing, please
join #lubuntu-devel on Freenode or email the lubuntu-devel mailing
list[9] at lubuntu-devel AT lists DOT ubuntu DOT com.

The Lubuntu PPA has the metapackage, but it has other packages that in my

I honestly do not know. There are earlier versions, later versions, and in the
end, having a massive amount of packages compiled by hand and thrown into a PPA
when we already have packages in the repositories, especially when the PPA
breaks every so often just isn't worth it to use. I think the reason why the
packages are in there(I could be wrong) was because we were waiting for LXQt
packages to make it into the repositories but now that is not the case. My PPA
is for a *single* package that takes packages that get migrated from Debian
where they have a whole team hacking on it and that gets it from upstream. So
while I appreciate the effort that Julien makes, it's not reliable at this
point in time. This is just until Julien gets the LXQt metapackage into Ubuntu,
this is meant to be a temporary replacement for that.

He might use it for a staging repository for fixes, but in that case it is
*not* wise at all to recommend it in *any* *way* to people wanting to try out
LXQt. LXQt has it's own problems, and I feel that pushing
possibly-non-production-ready packages to a PPA that we are recommending is
foolish.

2016-04-24 Thread Simon Quigley
I've modified the wiki page[1] to state:

"At this time, we are waiting for the LXQt metapackage to be included in the
Ubuntu repositories. For now, use the ppa:tsimonq2/lxqt-meta PPA for an
up-to-date metapackage. The purpose of this PPA is to simplify installing the
packages required for LXQt. '''This is only a metapackage and contains no other
packages.''' It takes all packages from the Ubuntu repositories and therefore
is preferred over using the Lubuntu Daily PPA for the sole purpose of using
LXQt because the Lubuntu Daily PPA has extra packages that tend to conflict
with others."

While I think it's good to have a MediaWiki wiki, the Canonical

opinion, we should concentrate our efforts. It would be fun to play

Greetings,

All of the packages are updated, and in those packages are system services that
need to be restarted for the update to be applied. It's just easier to reboot
than to have to restart each process one by one.

Re: [lubuntu-users] Unexpected system restart requested.

2016-05-28 Thread Simon Quigley
Greetings,

The difference between restarting after a regular software update and a release
update is that the latter usually requires a restart just to be safe. For
example, 14.04 -> 16.04 is two years of software updates. Open source software
really evolves in that timespan. So if it is just a few updates, I totally see
your point. But for something as massive as a release update, to be safe, you
should restart.

Hope that clears things up!

Re: [lubuntu-users] ring any bells?

2016-06-01 Thread Simon Quigley
Hi Jack,

When you boot up, hold your Shift key down to get your GRUB menu.

Select: Advanced Options for Ubuntu
Select: Ubuntu, with Linux VERSION (recovery mode)

When you boot up:
Select: root

It should bring you to a root console.

DISCLAIMER: Be *very* careful as this doesn't have the usual restrictions and
you could *permanently* damage your system if you don't follow my instructions.

Next, type the following to remount / as a readable and writable partition:

mount -o remount,rw /

Then, if you had /home or anything else on separate partitions, run:

mount --all

Then, after that, run the following to ensure Lubuntu is installed:

apt update && apt install lubuntu-desktop

I haven't done this in a while, so I don't know if it has networking right
away, but to get networking, run:

ifup --all

If it prompts you to install some packages, great. That's your issue. You
reboot and it should be all fine from there. If not, follow up and let us know.

Good luck!

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu Yakkety Yak Alpha 1 released!

2016-06-30 Thread Simon Quigley
Lubuntu Yakkety Yak Alpha 1 (soon to be 16.10) has been released!

We have a couple papercuts listed in the release notes[1], so please
take a look. We currently have a bug (with a workaround) that breaks
creating BTRFS and XFS partitions using the desktop installer.

A big thanks to Brendan Perrine and Nio Wiklund for helping us test this
release.

[lubuntu-users] Fwd: Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) reaches End of Life on July 28 2016

2016-07-07 Thread Simon Quigley
This affects Lubuntu as well. Upgrade if you haven't already!

 Forwarded Message
Subject: Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) reaches End of Life on July 28 2016
Date: Thu, 7 Jul 2016 12:16:48 +
From: Adam Conrad
To: ubuntu-annou...@lists.ubuntu.com
CC: ubuntu-security-annou...@lists.ubuntu.com

Ubuntu announced its 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) release almost 9 months
ago, on October 22, 2015. As a non-LTS release, 15.10 has a 9-month
month support cycle and, as such, the support period is now nearing
its end and Ubuntu 15.10 will reach end of life on Thursday, July
28th. At that time, Ubuntu Security Notices will no longer include
information or updated packages for Ubuntu 15.10.

The supported upgrade path from Ubuntu 15.10 is via Ubuntu 16.04.
Instructions and caveats for the upgrade may be found at:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/XenialUpgrades

Ubuntu 16.04 continues to be actively supported with security updates
and select high-impact bug fixes. Announcements of security updates
for Ubuntu releases are sent to the ubuntu-security-announce mailing
list, information about which may be found at:

https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-security-announce

Since its launch in October 2004 Ubuntu has become one of the most
highly regarded Linux distributions with millions of users in homes,
schools, businesses and governments around the world. Ubuntu is Open
Source software, costs nothing to download, and users are free to
customise or alter their software in order to meet their needs.

On behalf of the Ubuntu Release Team,

Adam Conrad

[lubuntu-users] [ANN] Lubuntu Bug Day

2016-07-14 Thread Simon Quigley
Greetings,

My name is Simon Quigley and I am a member of the Lubuntu Team. The
Lubuntu team is running a bug day on Tuesday, July 26, 2016. It’s a spin
of a hug day.

We will have an Ubuntu On Air session on Monday, July 25, 2016 from 19
to 20 UTC. I will give a presentation for the first half, then for the
second half, I will be joined by Walter Lapchynski and we will answer
questions provided to us over IRC. I strongly recommend that you either
attend the session or watch the archive, because we might answer a
question that you have. To attend, go to http://ubuntuonair.com/ during
the date/time I listed above.

What’s a Hug day?

From the Ubuntu Bug Day wiki page[1]:

"A Hug Day is a special day where the Ubuntu Community comes together
with a shared goal of triaging bugs for a specific package or set of
packages. Working together allows us to share knowledge and give some
much needed assistance to the Ubuntu Developers. The term Hug Day is a
spin on Bug Day; every time someone triages a bug, then someone else
should hug him/her. Why? This is a very special way for us to tell
everyone that we love contributions! And triaging bugs is a really big
contribution."

What bugs are we targeting?

The Lubuntu team has a team called the Lubuntu Packages Team[2]. It was
created to help track all the bugs related to Lubuntu, and it is a very
useful team for subscribing to all of the Lubuntu-related bugs. We would
like to ensure that this team stays up to date with all the Lubuntu
bugs, so we can make sure that our development team has an eye on them.
To do this, we need to go through the following steps:
 1. Find a bug that affects software preinstalled in Lubuntu.
 2. Triage[3] the bug accordingly, and if it still exists in a
reproducible state, subscribe the Lubuntu packages team.
 3. Add the bug to our known bugs list[4].

Where is the communication for this event happening?

Join the #lubuntu-devel channel on freenode, this is the Lubuntu team’s
IRC channel, and people will be around to help. If you don’t have an IRC
client, Kiwi IRC is a decent web client:
http://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.freenode.net/#lubuntu-devel

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to visit our IRC channel or
send me an email.

I hope to see you there!

Re: [lubuntu-users] Installation using mini.iso for i386-16.04 freezes loading nic-firmware package

2016-07-19 Thread Simon Quigley
Hi Nio,

First of all, thank you for looking into this.

Can you personally confirm this bug? If not, could you please ask OP to file a
bug report?

In that bug report, please subscribe the Lubuntu Packages Team. We can then
determine whether or not this is a Lubuntu and/or Ubuntu Server bug as well.

I'm predicting that it doesn't affect Lubuntu and/or Ubuntu Server because the
mini.iso cuts down on a lot of different packages, but I could be wrong.

Looping the Ubuntu Server list in and leaving Nio's original email below just
in case someone is experiencing the same thing.

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 16.04.1 LTS has been released!

2016-07-21 Thread Simon Quigley
Thanks to all the hard work from our contributors, we are pleased to
announce that Lubuntu 16.04.1 LTS has been released! This release
provides updates to the Lubuntu 16.04 LTS to reduce the update time
post-download and an upgrade path for users running Lubuntu 14.04 LTS.

WHERE CAN I DOWNLOAD IT?

On the Ubuntu cdimage server[1], we have images for the following
architectures:

- amd64 (commonly referred to as 64-bit)
- i386 (commonly referred to as 32-bit)

The release notes[2] are here if you wish to read them. We have left
out some notes that are common to all flavors, so read the Ubuntu
release notes[3] if you wish.

This release does NOT include PowerPC, although users of the PowerPC
platform can still receive updates.

KNOWN BUGS

To see the list of known bugs, please take a look at our release
notes[2]. We also have a list of Lubuntu-specific bugs that have been
fixed since the release of 16.04.

Forums[4]. With such graphics, or if you don't know, try the current
Lubuntu version.

HOW DO I GET SUPPORT?

Our support channel is #lubuntu on freenode IRC[5].

If you would like to contribute, head over
to our Getting Involved page[6]. We need help with Reporting bugs,
Translations, Tests/QA, Code & patches, Artwork, Documentation, and
Marketing/Press. If you have any questions about contributing, please
join #lubuntu-devel on Freenode or email the lubuntu-devel mailing
list[7] at lubuntu-devel AT lists DOT ubuntu DOT com.

Re: [lubuntu-users] 16.04.1 for powerpc

2016-07-22 Thread Simon Quigley
Greetings,

If you look at the release announcement, it states:

> This release does NOT include PowerPC, although users of the PowerPC platform
> can still receive updates.

This is because we received *zero* testing for PowerPC in 16.04.1. If
you want these images in the future, make sure they are tested[1]. :)

I hope this answers your question!

Re: [lubuntu-users] State of PPC

2016-07-23 Thread Simon Quigley
the record, when I post release announcements on Facebook,
Reddit, Twitter, and elsewhere, *I* respond when users say, "I'm having
an issue with X Y Z." I either link them to a bug report saying, "we're
working on it," I tell them, "I can confirm this and I filed a bug,
thank you so much for telling us about this," I ask them, "can you
clarify Z for me?," or I say, "I'm really sorry, but I can't confirm
this given your current setup. Could you please file a bug?
https://launchpad.net/link/to/package/+filebug."; I just make sure that
they know we're listening and understand. In fact, could you link me to
some of these forums? Maybe I should link the release announcements
there and respond to responses on that. I could also look at some
threads and instruct people on filing bugs and reporting issues that a
bunch of people are having in a way we can see it.

And the fact of the matter is that when people complain, "the devs
aren't paying attention!" or "the devs don't care," we do. We want to
make sure that Lubuntu is better for everyone. We just don't have the
time to scour the internet for people claiming, "it works!" or "we have
this problem" on release day to be able to follow through where the
people writing didn't. We want to release. So the time that person spent
grumbling about the problem and how it is a big issue could be time
spent reporting it. All it takes is *one* person reporting a problem in
the correct channels to get it fixed. In fact, take a look at our
release announcement:

> How do I get support?
> Our support channel is #lubuntu on freenode IRC. If you don’t have an IRC

I think I've gotten the point across and I hope we're on the same page.

Re: [lubuntu-users] uploaded: almost the released 16.04.1 LTS version for PowerPC

2016-07-24 Thread Simon Quigley
The Lubuntu team unfortunately can NOT recommend these images due to
Phill not being a member of the team any more[1] and it not being an
official server or builder.

To be clear, we didn't release Lubuntu 16.04.1 for PowerPC, and there
are no official images that we can recommend. I would recommend that
people stay away from these images because of the aforementioned concerns.

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu Yakkety Yak Alpha 2 Call for Testing

2016-07-27 Thread Simon Quigley
Greetings,

I apologize for being late on this, my fault.

It's time again! The Lubuntu team needs your help testing Lubuntu
Yakkety Alpha 2 so we can release tomorrow.

We just need the tests completed that are on http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/ .

Right now I'm working on the release notes for Alpha 2[1]. Check back in
a few hours if you want to proofread/confirm the notes. If you found any
new bugs, please link to them on the release notes.

If you found any other way to help that hasn't been listed above,
respond to this email, send me an email, or join #lubuntu-devel on
freenode[2] and mention it there.

As for not getting this out sooner, yesterday I realized that nobody
stepped up to help with the global Alpha 2 release yesterday and Lubuntu
was looking to do one (I've had my eye on this for a while), so late
afternoon US time yesterday, I stepped up. After that, I got tired and
had to go to sleep, I slept all day today, and I recently woke up.
That's why this didn't get out a few days ago, and I'm really sorry. My
fault.

For those of you who can test before we release, thank you. But I
understand all of you can't.

>From the recent discussions about PPC, I'd like to mention that we do
not release PPC on non-LTS releases, so although the testing helps, and
we still need people to test to make sure it doesn't break, we won't be
releasing a PPC image.

Thanks again everyone! :)

Greetings,

Looking at the tests again, it would be nice to finish up one last
*mandatory* Lubuntu Alternate i386 test and the optional ones, but I'd
like to give a HUGE thanks to Nio and Brendan for completing these tests
before I even had to say anything. I seriously don't know if the Lubuntu
team would release anything without these guys. :)

Also, if anybody with a PPC machine would like to test to make sure it
works, even though we aren't releasing an image, that would be great. :)

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 14.04.5 LTS has been released!

2016-08-04 Thread Simon Quigley
The latest and last point release of the Lubuntu Trusty Tahr LTS,
14.04.5, is now available for download.

This release includes images for amd64 (commonly referred to as 64-bit),
i386 (commonly referred to as 32-bit), and PowerPC.

The release notes[1], which covers the latest update as well as the
whole history of the release, is linked below. There is also a link to
download the images from the Ubuntu cdimage server[2].

Just note that we have a bug affecting PowerPC that affects installing
Lubuntu alongside another operating system. More details are in the
release notes.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this release possible!

approval) we have been thinking about this and you'll hear something

[lubuntu-users] Call for testing for alternate images (WAS: Architecture EOL plans for Lubuntu)

We really need to confirm what Bryan is saying. If he is correct and
Lubuntu Desktop really takes less resources than Lubuntu Alternate,
there is no use in keeping Alternate images.

We need someone on real hardware from each architecture (amd64, i386,
AND PowerPC) to test limits on their hardware. Here's what you have to
do to help.
 1. Grab the following images:
  a. Yakkety Daily Alternate
  b. Xenial Daily Alternate
  c. Yakkety Daily Live
  d. Xenial Daily Live
 2. Boot an image of your choice setting the mem=MB boot
parameter. Here's a guide on doing that:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBootParameters
 3. Select "Install Lubuntu"
 4. Install the operating system on your computer.
 5. Repeat steps 2-4 decreasing the amount of RAM until you get a
failure due to the lack of available RAM.
 6. Repeat steps 2-5 with all of the images.
 7. Respond reporting your results.

Also, now's the time to make your case for keeping alternate images. If
the results turn up that Desktop takes less resources, we will ask for
it to stop being produced unless we have a good reason to keep it.

Have a nice day, and get testing! :)

2016-08-23 Thread Simon Quigley
It's that time again! The Lubuntu team needs your help testing Lubuntu
Yakkety Beta so we can release without any problems on Thursday.

Later I'll work on the Beta 1 release notes[1]. Check back tomorrow if
you want to proofread/confirm the notes. If you found any
new bugs, please link to them on the release notes.

If you found any other way to help that hasn't been listed above,
respond to this email, send me an email, or join #lubuntu-devel on
freenode[2] and mention it there.

Lubuntu Yakkety Yak Beta 1 will be released on Thursday, so please get
your testing in as soon as possible!

NOTE: We don't need PowerPC testing as we don't release PowerPC for
non-LTS releases.

Re: [lubuntu-users] Does a default Lubuntu dark theme exist?

2016-08-31 Thread Simon Quigley
We're working hard on getting LXQt ready, so I look forward to it as well. :)

I've been using LXQt for the past few months and there's a few things I really
like about LXQt. I'll share those in a blog post once we finally work out
issues with lubuntu-default-settings (our current roadblock, upstream needs to
make it easier for downstream to use custom configs) and I get an MP approved
with all of the new default settings.

That is why on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/LXQt it says not to install the
package yet, because the default settings provided are not the best (for
example, the panel menu (for lack of a better word) doesn't have log out or
shut down buttons! eek!).

So it's a work in progress but it's going. :)

If you want to say hello on IRC, here is a link to a client with no captcha (I
link this to people either way but that's an added bonus for scrooyahoo ;) )
but it does require you to not use Tor (although most VPNs *do* work).
https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.freenode.net/#lubuntu-devel

In addition, as Walter said, join the lubuntu-devel list if you want to help
out Lubuntu. We could always need more help! :)

https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/lubuntu-devel

When I get a minute in the next few days (school starting tomorrow :/), I'll
update the LXQt wiki page with places I see people can help, and I encourage
other members of the Lubuntu team to fill our areas on that page to show what
needs to be done on your side of things for LXQt.

Thanks everyone! :)

By the way, MP = Merge Proposal. I have to set the default settings then

[lubuntu-users] What I didn't get a chance to talk about at the meeting

2016-09-15 Thread Simon Quigley
Hello everyone,

I had a few agenda items I wanted to discuss at the recent Lubuntu
meeting, but unfortunately I didn't do the math right on the time zones
and I ended up not being able to attend.

BUG DAY:

Walter wanted a report on Bug Day, but to make it short, nothing
happened. Nobody seemed to pop in on IRC, and I didn't see any bug
activity in particular.

LUBUNTU MANUAL:

Slow progress (been busy with a lot of different things). I would always
appreciate the help. Here's the GitHub repo which should have all the
details if you'd like to give us a hand:
https://github.com/lubuntu-team/lubuntu-manual

I don't think it applies to DocumentationStringFreeze (which was today)
because it's not a package. If it all goes as planned, there will be
time before release to translate, if desired.

LXQt/PLANS FOR 16.10 AND 17.04:

We won't get LXQt 0.11 in the archive for 16.10 because they didn't
release yet. Hopefully for 17.04 we'll be good to go. I've heard that
LXQt 0.11 provides a lot of improvements, so I'm looking forward to it. :)

(maybe I'll get it in a PPA somewhere and take it for a test drive, who
knows? ;) )

Lubuntu team, I would like to propose that we at the very minimum
provide an image with a fully featured Lubuntu with LXQt for 17.04 (if
not default). This would include LXQt 0.11 (or 0.12, depending on their
timing) and would have all the default settings set. Even if we can't do
it, it would be a nice goal to set, just to have something to work towards.

It seems we're just waiting on a patch to be merged into Qt[1] so we can
set an environment variable to make our default settings apply
correctly[2]. Then, depending on when it's merged and what version of Qt
ships with 17.04, we might have to get the patch cherry-picked[3]. I'm
CCing Palo Kisa who has been awesome in helping me figure out a few
little quirks along the way (for example, this pull request which will
really help us in the future: https://github.com/lxde/liblxqt/pull/104
), just in case he has anything to add. But, I honestly don't see this
happening right away as 16.10 is right around the corner (we can use
PPAs to test, though).

Something to consider would be doing what Kubuntu does. If an individual
running 16.10 would like to use LXQt from the Yakkety archive, we can
upload to a backports PPA. Thoughts on this, Julien?

Within the next day or two, I'll get a tarball and some instructions on
installing LXQt and manually applying the default settings I whipped up,
so people can get testing. I haven't had a good experience building
ISOs, but I'll try again in a few days as well.

For those people who are unaware, we currently have a blocker in our
LXQt transition. We would like to apply some default settings, but there
are currently some upstream blockers (Qt at the moment, there might be
another blocker in the future, who knows?) that we have to unblock to be
able to continue.

Lubuntu team (especially Julien), objections?

Lubuntu community, about the above, more opportunities to test things
will certainly come very soon (within the next few weeks). We look
forward to any feedback you might have. :)

I encourage feedback on anything I wrote about here.

Have a good night everyone!

[2] An environment variable has to be set so LXQt knows which settings
to use.
[3] Just that patch could be put in the Ubuntu Qt package, which allows
for things like this to be immediately worked with.

This time would be for the October-January meetings, if that's alright with

I would then propose a new time that fits with my schedule for the second

[lubuntu-users] AskUbuntu Tag

2016-09-26 Thread Simon Quigley
Good morning,

Just a short reminder that we have a designated place on AskUbuntu for
people to tag their Lubuntu-related questions. Here it is:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/tagged/lubuntu?sort=newest&pageSize=15

If someone could go through and answer a few questions there when they
have a minute, that would be great. This evening I will subscribe to the
RSS feed (on the bottom of the page) myself and attempt to navigate
through a few of them.

For example, here is one submitted 7 hours ago that someone could either
ask clarifying questions about or straight up answer:

Have a nice day!

Hello Nio,

It seems we're going to have one more respin for the kernel, and barring
any unforeseen difficulties, that will be our final respin.

At this point in the Yakkety release schedule, we'll let everyone know

Thanks for asking!

[lubuntu-users] [ANNOUNCEMENT] Lubuntu 16.10 Released!

2016-10-13 Thread Simon Quigley
Thanks to all the hard work from our contributors, Lubuntu 16.10 has
been released! With the codename Yakkety Yak, Lubuntu 16.10 is the 11th
release of Lubuntu, with support until July 2017.

We even have Lenny the Lubuntu mascot[1] dressed up for the occasion!

WHAT IS LUBUNTU?

Lubuntu is an official Ubuntu flavor based on the Lightweight X11
Desktop Environment (LXDE). The project’s goal is to provide a
lightweight yet functional distribution. Lubuntu specifically targets
older machines with lower resources, but also runs great on newer
hardware. Along with a simple but usuable graphical user interface,
Lubuntu comes with a wide variety of applications chosen for their small
footprint so you can browse, email, chat, play, and be productive.

WHERE CAN I DOWNLOAD IT?

On the Ubuntu cdimage server[2], we have images for the following
architectures:
 - amd64 (commonly referred to as 64-bit)
 - i386 (commonly referred to as 32-bit)

The release notes are here if you wish to read them[3]. We have left out
some notes that are common to all flavors, so read the Ubuntu release
notes[4] if you wish.

WHAT'S IMPROVED SINCE 16.04?

 - We now ship with Linux Kernel 4.8.
 - General bug fix release as we prepare to switch to LXQt.
 - LXDE components have been updated with bug fixes.
 - The artwork has received an update.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Lubuntu is a good operating system for many old computers, but not for
all of them. Some computers have too little horsepower or memory. A rule
of thumb is that the computer should not be more than 10 years old.

*Memory (RAM)*

For advanced internet services like Google+, YouTube, Google Drive, and
Facebook, your computer needs at least 1 GB of RAM.

For local programs like LibreOffice and simple browsing habits, your
computer needs at least 512 MB of RAM.

*Processor (CPU)*

The minimum specification for CPU is Pentium 4 or Pentium M or AMD K8.
Older processors are too slow and the AMD K7 has problems with Flash video.

HOW DO I GET SUPPORT?

Our support channel is #lubuntu on freenode IRC[5]. If you don’t have an
IRC client, click the link in the earlier sentence, type in a nickname,
press start, state your question and press Enter to speak.

We also have the lubuntu-users mailing list. Send an email to
lubuntu-users AT lists DOT ubuntu DOT com.

HOW DO I CONTRIBUTE?

We always need more help! If you would like to contribute, head over to
our Getting Involved page[6]. If you have any questions about
contributing, please join #lubuntu-devel on freenode or email the
lubuntu-devel mailing list at lubuntu-devel AT lists DOT ubuntu DOT com.

KNOWN ISSUES

For known issues, please see the release notes[3].

LXQt

Unfortunately, we could not get LXQt ready in time for 16.10, so Lubuntu
16.10 ships with LXDE.

The reason that we replaced this with GNOME Software in 16.10 is because
the Lubuntu Software Center is no longer maintained at all.

[lubuntu-users] Ending Lubuntu Zesty Daily PowerPC Builds

2017-02-06 Thread Simon Quigley
Hello everyone,

I noticed we still had PowerPC Daily Builds enabled, and after the
Technical Board decided[1] to remove the 32-bit powerpc architecture
in future releases, Lubuntu will no longer be able to have a PowerPC Zesty
release past Feature Freeze. I propose we remove the Lubuntu Zesty Daily
PowerPC Builds effective Monday, February 13, 2017, if that's alright with
everyone. This will ensure that we have adequate time to make sure the removal
is clean and leaves no outstanding issues on the 16th when the architecture
is removed.

LTS support for PowerPC systems will not go away, lasting until April of 2019,
so if you have a system that uses the PowerPC architecture on Lubuntu 16.04 LTS,
you can expect security updates from the Ubuntu archive until April of 2021, or
support from *us* until April of 2019[2] (only a *three* year support period as
opposed to five for the entire archive, if that makes sense).

Please let me know if you have any questions.

[lubuntu-users] Lubuntu 16.04.2 LTS has been released!

2017-02-16 Thread Simon Quigley
Thanks to all the hard work from our contributors, we are pleased to

out some notes that are common to all flavors, so read the Ubuntu
release notes[3] if you wish.

This release does NOT include PowerPC, although users of the PowerPC
platform can still receive updates. This is due to the fact that PowerPC
users would be left with an unsupported kernel after support is dropped
in the development release, Zesty Zapus.

Lubuntu is a good operating system for many old computers, but not for

[lubuntu-users] Call for testing: Lubuntu 17.04 FINAL images

2017-04-10 Thread Simon Quigley
We're nearing April 13th, the release date for Lubuntu 17.04. We need your help
in testing Lubuntu 17.04 so we can release on Thursday.

The Lubuntu team needs help testing to make sure that the ISO boots and installs
the system correctly, and can reboot into a Lubuntu desktop without any critical
errors.

We strongly recommend that you use real hardware, not virtual machines. While
virtual machines are useful, complete testing includes watching out for edge
cases.

To install Lubuntu, grab an image, write it to a USB drive (or burn it to a DVD)
and follow the instructions listed on the ISO QA tracker[1]. When you begin
testing, mark the test case as "In Progress" and after following the
instructions, make sure to edit your result and indicate if it was successful or
if you ran into any problems.

If you see that the images are already tested, don't let that discourage you. We
would like to see more than one successful result for each test case, so feel
free to test it again. Also, don't be afraid to help out any other flavors that
are missing submissions -- the process for doing this is pretty universal.

If you find any new bugs that haven't been reported on the release notes for
Final Beta, please file a bug report and add it to the release notes.

Please watch out and heavily test the following two things:

 - We have a new LXPanel, please make sure it works properly.
 - Ubuntu has switched the underlying DNS resolver to systemd-resolved, so
please test that DNS works properly on all of your systems.

Lastly, I'll be working on the release notes[2] within the next couple of days.
Please don't be afraid to correct any problems you might find.

Happy testing!

2017-06-29 Thread Simon Quigley
Lubuntu Artful Aardvark Alpha 1 (soon to be 17.10) has been released!
Also in this release (in addition to the usual LXDE ISO) is an
experimental image with LXQt instead of LXDE.

notes[1], so please take a look there.

You can grab the Lubuntu images from here:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/artful/alpha-1/

*We recommend that if you install Lubuntu Artful Aardvark Alpha 1, that
you download the LXDE edition rather than the experimental LXQt ISO. The
LXQt ISO will most likely break your system.*

If you would like to read the release notes for Lubuntu Next (the
*experimental* LXQt edition of Lubuntu), you can find them here[2]. The
release notes lists all of the known issues for the images.

You can grab the *experimental* Lubuntu Next images from here:

[lubuntu-users] Call for testing: SRU for LXTerminal

2017-07-13 Thread Simon Quigley
Hello everyone!

In Debian, a fix for an issue was applied from upstream that was
affecting LXTerminal, where tabs could not be renamed. This has been
available in Artful for a bit, but I have been working on getting the
fix in the archive for Zesty.

The fix has been uploaded to zesty-proposed and now needs some testing.
All of the details are available on https://pad.lv/1703307 including
what was fixed, and we now need some people to help confirm that the
update does not introduce any regressions and that it works.

The more people test the better, and the quicker it is tested, the
quicker it gets released for all users of Lubuntu 17.04 to enjoy. So
please, if you could help us out, that would be great.

Thanks!
