Re: [lubuntu-users] Scanning thru network not working?

2016-09-09 Thread Andre Campos Rodovalho
Here in the company I use Brother DCP-7065DN (wired network) using simple
scan (Brother Linux Drivers required)
I also use Epson L355 (wireless network) also on simple scan (also needs
SEIKO Linux Drivers)
In house I used to use HP 8600 and 8100 (wireless or wired network) with
simples scan software (hplip package required only)

Summarizing, network scanning in linux works, it is a matter of drivers
only. Some are tricky to get working, some are not...

I have never heard about Windows OS sharing scanners.

I would like to add some details in the hope of clarifying the situation
for the benefit of anyone reading this in the future. The first thing I
should say is that I am no Linux expert.

Apparently there are ways to set up a Linux wireless scanner server with both
Linux and Windows clients
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SaneDaemonTutorial
I haven't tried it and I haven't seen any hint of a Windows based scanner
server for Linux clients.

What I have done is set up my new Brother MFC-J480DW to print and scan with
Linux
without ever connecting a cable (apart from the power cable).

I downloaded the software from Brother
http://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=us=en=mfcj480dw_us_eu_as=128
and installed it using GDebi. The printer installed using "add printer" but
the scanner didn't work. "No scanners detected".

I followed the instructions at this site
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/15
and the scanner didn't work. "No scanners detected".

Finally I retried the Brother installation script with manual specification
of the device URI and the scanner and the printer now work.

I have now done it twice - once with a netbook running Lubuntu 13.10 (32bit)
and
once with a laptop running Zorin 9 (32bit).

The printer URI can look like this
"dnssd://Brother%20MFC-J480DW._pdl-datastream._tcp.local/"
and I was asked to specify the scanner IP address. The scanner worked but the
printer
seemed unreliable ("Printer not connected").
If I specified the printer URI as the IP address, the installer used the same
value for
the scanner and both seem to work reliably.

I always knew that the scanner would work wirelessly because there's a Brother
app
for Android which works very well. Just in case you're wondering - in my house
it's
easier to take the computer to the scanner than it is to take the scanner to
the computer.
Wireless is very useful.

Useful to know, but please do not top-post on the list.

2016-09-04 Thread Narcis Garcia
I can make network scan with these Brother Wifi devices, but only
through a Windows virtual machine running inside GNU/Linux.
Brother seems to provide network scanning software only for Windows,
because it uses a closed~privative protocol.

Decent network scanners are FTP capable, and then all it's easier and
decent.

So it has Wifi. It is network-capable. This is not the same as a

Yes, sure, but that is not shared through Windows. It is a
network-capable printer/scanner, and the Linux machine is connecting
directly to it over the network.

If the all-in-one device is USB-only, then the connection is:

[all-in-one] <--> [Windows PC] <--> [Linux PC]

The AI1 is only attached to the Windows PC; the Linux PC is printing
to Windows, and Windows forwards the task to the printer.

If the AI1 is network capable, then it is more like:

[Windows PC] <--> [AI1] <--> [Linux PC]

*Both* computers are directly connected to it.

But this requires a network-capable AI1 device, and they are more
expensive than simple USB ones.

Hi Barry,
It is useful if you need to scan things, and do work on them when the
kids are asleep and the printer/scanner is in the living room.

I have used it on a few occasions.
It is also nice not to have to plug a cord in, you just turn on the
printer, then scan.
There are 'few' times it is needed, mostly it is nice to not need to
plug in a cord just to scan.

L210 (which is connected to Desktop 1 via cable). I suppose this is
possible thru the installed smbclient, correct? Desktop 1 needs to be
running, obviously.

Desktop 2, in addition to having this installed:

epson-inkjet-printer-201207w_1.0.0-1lsb3.2_i386.deb

also has "iscan" installed. Although Lubuntu already comes with
"Simple Scan".

As stated above, network printing is possible. But I get this error
when running "Simple Scan":

"No scanners detected. Please check your scanner is connected and
powered on"

and this error when I run "iscan"

"Could not send command to scanner. Check the scanner's status."

Please note that network printing is only possible because I had to
manually type in:

smb://192.168.1.105/EPSON%20L210%20Series

in the "Windows Printer via SAMBA" (which you can find when you click
the +Add button in Printers app.

I believe that is not the best way to do it? I'm not sure, but I think
it used to be that I click "Find Network Printer" and type the ip
address of the computer to which the Epson printer is connected
(Desktop 1 / windows 7 machine), then it would be able to detect the
printer and I would continue from there.

I wonder if that has anything to do with the network scanning problem.

In other words, network printing is possible only because of a
workaround; the root of the problem seems unsolved, and so the network
scanning problem is to be expected. Am I wrong?

Please also note that the following files are installed.

cups
sane
smbclient
samba
cifs-utils

Hi,

I have an HP DeskJet 3510 and scanning from WiFi works flawlessly and
requires no setup. I use the gnome printer tool to set it up, and

Not sure what to tell you other than it is definitely possible, and is
extraordinarily easy when you use HP. I also did it previously with an
HP printer connected via an ethernet cable to my router.

You might try looking in the cups configuration to see if your printer
supports it.
