Re: Jacob Polak
I was told by a well known musicologist who happened to be my professor when I went to school that he was Polish. His name was applied much like El Greco (The Greek) was applied to the famous artist in Spain. Understanding that there were a lot of Jews in Poland it is not unlikely that he indeed was Jewish. The same argument has been made about Christopher Columbus. " Jakub Reys (Polak) Jakub Reys, also known as "Jacques le Polonais" or "Jakub Polak", was born in Poland around 1540. He was a lute-player and composer who was active mainly in France. He must have been a very skilled performer, because the works that were written by him are full of technical difficulties which he himself seems to have managed quite well. Also as a composer he was a man who followed new ideas - the at that time emergent major-minor tonal system, strong harmonic considerations, dissonances through suspensions and retardations and the like. Especially admired were his galliards (four of which still survive) which show already the main construction principle that should be the leading one for the two coming centuries: in the major keys, modulation to the dominant, and in the minor keys, modulation to the relative major. Amongst other dance forms we know also of one sarabande by Reys, which consists of a theme and seven variations - this piece is of special interest because it shows the earliest occurrence of said dance on French ground. Apart from his lute works he may also have been the person who made a few keyboard intabulations, however, this cannot be claimed with certainty nowadays, as we have too little evidence of historical facts in connection with a piece by Gabrieli that was intabulated in 1605 and is signed "Jakob". Re: lute tablatures online / IE problems
Thanks , Taco. I use IE and a Firewall , visiting the site without Firewall means getting cookies by Doubleclick, which as far as I know contains spyware, Adserver and some others. There were also some connection requests ( =spyware as well). French sites usually use a lot of Active X, Java etc, so that I usually either can't open them or see a blank page, because of firewall protection. Ad-aware did not find new objects after visiting the site. I don't remember who suggested a site to know why spam comes in groups, but I was not able to open it, and checking using the Firewall I noticed it had several doubleclick and other spam-furnishing devices inserted...funny, isn't it? An anti-spam site.. There is a link page on my site , for Tablatures, I'll update it as soon as possible.
