both of these faults. The present letter is a very long one, simply
because I had no leisure to make it shorter.

[LUTE] Re: Vivaldi Concerto RV 93 again - live rec.

2011-11-07 Thread Edward Mast
Thank you for posting this fine performance. The lovely sound of the lute came
through on the recording, though a bit subdued as one would expect. I hope it
did as well for the audience; it must be difficult to project a lute's sound
into a large hall.

   Dear Colleagues,
I would like to share my struggle with Vivaldi's Lute Concerto in
D-major played live, in a big hall, without amplification, on the
baroque lute, strung partially in gut.
There was only one, not very good microphone for whole ensemble, so
sorry for not satisfying sound quality of the lute in the tuttis.
Thanks to all of you for the very interesting and informative
discussion couple months ago about the appropriate/right/historical
instrument which should be used for Vivaldi's lute works.
We worked shortly on this Concerto with my professor - Rolf Lislevand,
whose first advice when I came with this piece was - play it on the
baroque guitar! (as he did on his famous Vivaldi recording...).
Indeed, it works fantastic on b-guitar, especially in the tuttis! But I
decided to play it on the b-lute, because it is still the main
   instrument for me.

I'd be grateful for a pointer to a site that has any amount
of lute music arranged for the grand staff.

Thanks,

All the lute music which is available in midi format is easily convertible to
grand staff.

To make superglue dry instantly, you can use a solution of
baking soda (not baking powder) in water. If you want a
smooth surface, be sure the baking soda is completely dissovled
in the water.

Certain adhesives used by surgeons, though similar to superglue,
are distinct, as discussed here

Wolfgang, that is wonderful playing; so clear, so intelligently moving- such
glowing, perfect tone (gut strings? Tech details for lautengeeks please!) Such
a relaxedly measured pace, but never losing forward motion. More, please.

Thanks.

[LUTE] Re: Cuts and burns on fingertips- superglue.

2011-11-07 Thread Daniel Winheld
Herb-

Thanks for the reference. Something I had always wondered about- especially
last month when I went to the ER for a sliced thumb joint and they glued it up
for me for a mere $2400 (Insurance covered all but $50. Interesting math, isn't
it?) At least the article spelled out why one shouldn't use non-medical
cyanoacrylates frivolously. I have in my tool chest the version Loctite 420-
unavailable to the general public. You have to pretend to be a contractor buy
from industrial supply house like Grainger. I use it for minor lute repairs
(NEVER for anything that needs to be reversible!) and highly stressed archery
equipment. Nothing like the whiff of strong cyanoacrylates to wake you up in
the morning, and the stuff does indeed burn on skin contact.

I agree with Dan's comments on Wolfgang's plalying, and also hope for more
playing, and some lute related details.

Thanks Wolfgang,

this piece of music comes directly from my heart. I found it some years
ago in the wroclav ms 352. isn´t it nice? It took my attention by its
broken style structure and I think it´s from marco dall aquila or
directly influenced by him.I wrote a little paper of all in te domine
intabulations for the LSA quaterly some years ago.
recently paul o´dette did a recording of marco dall aquila with this
piece at the of his cd (did he read my paper???).

I use nylgut on my 7-c-lute. my lute was built by renatus lechner in
2003, a wonderful instrument (after gerle)
the woodcuts are from a decamerone-print of 1542 by giolito/venezia,
which I owned.

From the heart! The one ingredient that cannot be faked; unmistakeable when
present. Without which, even the most technically perfect most musically
informed rendition lacks something- and when present, has saved many a
less-than-perfect performance, even when played on the wrong instrument or in
the wrong style.

When the instrument the performance are technically fine, musically informed
in the correct style, plus from the heart, we come close to artistic
perfection.
