This doesn't mean that "Apollo's lore" had to be a common expression, but I think Philips would have expected her readers to understand what she meant by it. -- To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html

[LUTE] Venetian lute paintings
I am currently working on a research project that will employ a theory based on Baxandall to examine Italian Renaissance paintings, particularly ones by Venetian painters, that have as one of their subjects the lute--"The Lute Observed", if you will. A study of the meanings of the lute as a matter of musical iconography of the period. I would be most grateful to hear any suggestions on relevant literature. If anyone's being obscure, it's not Purcell. The poem is the 20th stanza of a French poem, La Solitude A Alcidon translated by the 17th-century English writer Katherine Philips, who published under the name Orinda. You might want to look over the first 19 stanzas. You can find the French and English versions here: http://www.jimandellen.org/womenspoetry/solitude.html Philips titled her translation "La Solitude de St. Amant" which seems to be a reference to St. Amand, the 6th-century monk and missionary who forsook his wealthy family and founded monasteries in Belgium. [LUTE] Orlando Gibbons
As far as I know there is no original lute music by Gibbons but some of the keyboard pieces could be arranged to become lute pieces. I have loaded midi files of the Mag and Nunc by Gibbons onto the Werner Icking music site. The Mag and Nunc is a deliberately simple butbeautiful piece and could be made into a lute song very easily I think. Probably someone might be able to manipulate the midi files with Fronimo much easier than I could with Sibelius as Sibelius is problematic with notes lower than course 6. Sibelius in auto mode would work well for the piece in G but I think I would prefer it in F with lots of course 7s. -- To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
