No, a Panthaleon, named after the (back then) famous virtuoso Panthaleon
Hebenstreit.
This was a (enormously large) hammered dulcimer invented by Mr. Hebenstreit and
build
by Silbermann, strung with both metal _and_ gut strings.
Hebenstreit was the highest paid musician at the Dresden court - got even more
money than
Pisendel.

Dear friends,
here you find a short video with the Toccata VII from the IV book by Kapsberger.
I play my unhistorical short theorbo (an instrument measuring 70/117) that I
use when I need to travel by plane.
The known timbric problem caused by the wounded strings (usually V, VI, VII
fretted and XII, XII and XIV bourdons) is here brilliantly solved by the great
Mimmo Peruffo (Aquila corde).
The theorbo is strung with new nylgut (the whyte/yellow strings) and a new
synthetic dark red material for the bass strings.
The video is recorded with two cameras; the audio is untouched and is recorded
with a pair of Shoeps MK 21 going directly in my Zoom H6. No reverb and
equalization are added.
The location is my small and dry studio in Cremona.

[LUTE] Re: Lenten music...

2015-02-11 Thread cyndiric
Musical instruments can be played during Lent depending on the
denomination. The Allegri Miserere is meant to be a cappella, and that
would be a reason to not include instruments. However, I was in a choir
whose sopranos were having a lot of difficulty with the high notes, so
our director imbedded an oboe player in the soprano section to give
   support and confidence.

2015-02-11 Thread Stephan Olbertz
This is exciting! Hier hängt die Unschuld nackt und bloss, aria with Tenor
and (judged by the mp3 on amzon.de) d-minor theorbo. Gebel was a close
friend of Johann Kropfgans. I believe his single lute piece is an
arrangement of a pantaleon solo, which Gebel played quite succesfully (he
used an all gut-strung instrument, BTW).

Thanks and best regards

Stephan

   Dear Stephan

I stand corrected. I remembered it as Graupner because of the
anniversary year and because ofA all the Graupner I played myself, but
it was Gebel. Georg Gebel. Johannes Passion with obligato lute.A

My apologies for the wild goose chase and/or red herrings. Neither for
