[LUTE] Re: The lute list is retiring soon
Thank you so much Wayne. Both lute list and your webpage have been a great help for me. I discovered your webpage as a new emigrant to Canada in nineties. I could not take my lute tabulatures from Poland: they were too heavy, and there were a lot of side trips along the way. I just had my basic bagpack, lute and guitar. So music on your webpage was just like heaven for me. Many, many thanks and best wishes for the future, Magdalena Tomsinska __ From: lute-...@new-old-mail.cs.dartmouth.edu on behalf of Wayne Sent: August 22, 2020 3:04 PM To: lute net Subject: [LUTE] The lute list is retiring soon Hi - I have been running this lute mail list since 1998, and it has been interesting and fun. Now I am retiring from my job at Dartmouth College, and when I retire the computers that I have run will be shut down. This includes the mail servers that run the lute mail list. So it is time to retire from running the lute mail list too. I will also be closing my lute web page, my lute tablature page, and "Lutes For Sale" web page. If someone wants to take up running the lute mail list I suggest that they announce it on my list in the next month, while my list is still running. My list runs using software that I wrote, and I donât recommend that someone else try to use it. I donât know the last day yet, but I will make an announcement when my list actually closes. [LUTE] Re: Gdansk (Danzig) tablature 4022
Hello, Well, I think Danzig 4022 is a really wonderful collection of early 17th c. lute music, mostly dances and arrangements of songs and some German hymns. It is truly international in its character, with Hungarian and Dutch dances among others, though the largest group dances constitute of 41 Balletti Polachi. It is a perfect blend of European lute music of that time. :) Some pieces are easy to play, some are rather difficult. I played all pieces on 8-course lute, though some pieces require 9- or 10-course lute. Not too many, though. From all 222 pieces written in Danzig 4022 only 25 of them should be played on 9-course lute. What is fascinating for me is the fact, that in this collection we have pieces in renaissance style as well as pieces written in early baroque style, using "style brise", like almost all pieces by Robert Ballard. His pieces are among my favourites. :) It is also very interesting time in the history of Gdansk, with its cultural blend, Polish and German, and with English theatre performing there almost every year from 1601-1619 and 1636-1655! Some well known pieces, like Monica or Est-ce Mars are here in unique arrangements. Overall - making a research (it is printed in the facsimile by Tree Edition) and recording the CD - it was enjoyable, though sometimes stressful, adventure. They sing wonderfully, in 4-parts harmony, some songs are with lute (Magdalena Tomsinska) and viola da gamba (Marcin Zalewski) accompaniament, some are a capella. Lute solos include Dowland's miniatures: Praeludium, Lady Laiton's Almain, Lady Hunsdon's Almain, Tarleton's Jig and Mr.Dowland's Midnight. By the way - on the same web page [4]http://collegiumvocale.bydgoszcz.pl/ you can also find an older CD called "Chansons", with few French lute solos by Attaignant and Le Roy, free to download or just to listen. [LUTE] Diomedes Cato and Herhold
Dear all, I am writing my papers about Gdansk lute tablature 4022. The tablature probably was written around 1620. I try to establish if there are any pieces by Diomedes Cato. As you may know Diomedes Cato died in Gdansk in 1628 (the information written by Piotr Poziank in New Grove..., 1980 and in Musica Antiqua Polonica, 1994, are already outdated) as 73 years old man. So he was then born in 1555. He was buried in the church of St.Nicolas or on the cemetary belonging to the church. The above information I took from the Danuta Popinigis article printed in 2000 in Musica Baltica. So naturally, if Cato died in 1628 in Gdansk and the Gdansk tablature was written around 1620, I would suspect that some of the Diomedes pieces might be written in this tablature. Diomedes name doesn't appear in the tablature but so far I found one concordant piece. However - I don't have all pieces attributed to Cato. I have Diomedes Cato, Preludia, fantazje, taAA"ce i madrygaAA'y I na lutniAe(TM) WDMP z.24, PWM 1970, ed. Piotr PoAA-oniak and Diomedes Cato, Preludia, fantazje, taAA"ce i madrygaAA'y II na lutniAe(TM), WDMP z.67, PWM 1973, ed. Piotr PoAA-oniak. There are two more pieces by Cato in Herhold, CH -Gbusch Ms.E 1602, f. 41-41v. There are also some Ballettos (f.42-45) after pieces attributed to Diomedes. According to my friend there is a least one Balletto concordant to Balletto Polacho from Gdansk 4022. I would love to check that as well. So here, finally, comes my big request... Would you like to share with me folios 41 - 45 from Herhold? best to all of you, Magdalena Tomsinska PS. I know I could buy the whole Herhold collection from Albert Reyerman and I sincerely apologise for not willing to do so... I already spend a lot of money on my reasarch and I simply can't afford it right now...
