[BAROQUE-LUTE] Combining Lute and Classical Guitar Activities?!?!?!?

2010-04-18 Thread Oskar De Mari
   Dear list

At the risk of 'outing' myself as a lute player who hasn't completely
renounced classical guitar music, I have an enquiry for any
proffesionals or high-level amatuers or who have managed to combine
activities as a lutenists with continued classical guitar concertizing.

   any info on the following?

-nails/flesh/some kind of crazy method of having both exclusive but
   simultaneously available?

   -string tension

-what kind of place is there in the concert-world for someone who can
do first half lute, second half guitar, ala Bream

Thanks a lot for any advice and please, no authenticity rants about
finger-nails. They used them back then. Maybe Weiss didn't but some
   did:) (though I don't!)

   Thanks indeed!

[BAROQUE-LUTE] Baroque German lute sources

2010-04-12 Thread Oskar De Mari
   dear list,

I'm doing my honours thesis on the developments that led to a German
Lute school - post-30 years war french lute, through the Reusners etc,
Conradi, to Weiss and beyond. I would realyl appreciate some help in
the form of any relavant books you can think of I've got Baron
obviously, and Ledbetter on French stuff, and a host of general baroque
books. Are there any studies of the lute in this period? Any Weiss
Biographies out there? any published articles on baroque german lute
   and later styles?

this sort of thing would really help!

   thanks sincerely,

I couldn't find anything else on the web mentioning it

[BAROQUE-LUTE] Pat O'Brian

2009-09-18 Thread Oskar De Mari
   Hello all,
I've been wondering lately about technique for the right and left hand
on lute and particularly about Pat O'Brian's ideas on these things.
I've heard he is a genius on the subject of the hands and technique and
wondered if any on this list can relate to me some of the advice he
gave? I'm particularly interested because, while I'm studying to become
a proffesional lutenist, I've struggled with injuries in the past.
There is a guitar technique wizard here in Australia called Phillip
Houghton and he fixed my technique up and got rid of my injuries, and
we're both interested in some of the ideas of mr O' Brian.
   thanks guys,
   Oskar

[LUTE] baroque lute question

2009-09-07 Thread Oskar De Mari
   Dear all,
I'm thinking about buying a baroque lute and wondered about your
opinions on the subject- what do you think are good string measurements
(spacing at the nut and bridge)?; what makers do you like (perhaps
lesser-known makers than the top ones!)? what do you think about the
action and playability (any ideas what makes an 'easy action' ie how
far from the fret board etc)?
thanks for any help you can provide!

[LUTE] strings, pitch, thickness tension - need help!

2009-06-26 Thread Oskar De Mari
   Hello collective wisdom,
I'm sure this has all been discussed in full before, but the other day
I started to wonder about lute-stringing and I'm hoping some of you
won't mind helping me oput a bit with ideas.
I recently ordered a full set of gut strings for my vihuela (calculated
string-thickness with Paul Baier's string calculator). My vihuela is in
G at 440 and its string length is 56cm (its by Alexander Batov by the
   way)...
anyway my thoughts and queries are as follows: (please excuse
   amatuerish questions!)
isn't the Baeir string-density calculator just his interpretation? by
this I mean, If our lute's bridge can take the increased tension, isn't
it possible to string at a given pitch, but with thicker strings than
the string calculator suggests for that pitch? or thinner strings at a
   lesser tension.
can anyone tell me about the various top players' choices on strings -
for example, Hoppy Smith has a unique lute-sound, obviously from
playing right over the rose, but on some records of his he also seems
to have a very high tension on his strings- I gather this because he
still sounds as if he's playing over the rose, but there is a punch, or
'pop' to the sound, quite different from the rather sloppy sound one
gets playing over the rose at a low string-tension... another example-
some of Jakob Lindberg's recordings (particularly the La Serenissima
set) Have a beautiful 'woody' gut sound, kind of dry but with depth,
but also with a quite short sustain, which adds charm of its own. Chris
Wilson has a very sparkling gut sound, bright but not dry, his best
sound I think is on the 'la compagna disk'. The list goes on and on,
and then you have 'way out' players like Eduardo Eguez who have a very
different sound, obviously with huge string-tension. There seem to be
different 'schools' - those who like a kind of dry, woody, gut sound
and those who like a floating, airier sound. I guess this isn't so much
a question as just an attempt to get the ball rolling on some thoughts
about strings, sound, etc... I don't hae a lot of experience in this
department so if anyone wants to share their experiences with this kind
of thing it would be most helpful!
   thanks,
   O
