   Dear Fellow Lutenists:

Salut! I have featured me and my Bass Renaissance Lute in a video
The Madrigal: Angel Song available on YouTube/My Space, so if anyone
was contemplating purchase they can get a rather fine view of The
Lute in these stills. The song is from my most recent CD offerring The
Madrigal, however the music is guitar music. I am planning a recording
of 3 original Lute/Guitar works in September, the Lute is then free and
clear for sale (much to my chagrain I do not have the dexterity or
patience to play it properly). I hope all is well . . . Have a great
   day!

[LUTE] Re: Happy New Year's! and Lute News

2010-01-05 Thread Rebecca Banks
   January 5th, 2009

   Dear Fellow Lutenists:

I am writing to wish you all a belated Happy New Year's! I have
written some Lute/guitar pieces and will be in the Studio recording
them, hopefully by Summer. After recording I am looking for a buyer
for my 6c Bass Renaissance Lute, it has a beautiful tone, all in yellow
woods. The challenge of learning to play traditional Lute music, is
meant for the very young, I suspect, as the speed of hand interchanges
is phenomenal and rather beyond my scope or patience. All those that
play the Lute so well are very gifted and I love the instrument and the
music, it is quite wonderful that someone can play such beautiful
songs. I am busy with writing, performing and am currently in the
Studio recording The Madrigal, hopefully to be on iTunes by Spring. I
   wish you all the best,

   love,

   Rebecca

   Dear Lutenists:

Re: Luciano Faria, I had a good experience with Luciano,
although it took about 2 years to make the Bass Renaissance Lute it did
arrive all in bubble wrap with a great case lined in blue. I think he
lives on the outskirts of Sao Paulo and goes into town for supplies
occasionally so he is away from his computer (and I think his computer
is run on a generator, which occasionally goes down)(Eugene Braig
knows, he told me this). My guess is he will probably come through for
you, he has a business reputation (although I also know that artists or
artisans lives are often conflicted). My last direct contact was about
3 years ago. Best of luck!

   Dear Lutenists:

This painting is quite classically romantic . . . what if you
could play a Lute with copper phosphorous wound strings? I had an
Offman Lute/Guitar with copper strings but the neck broke and had to be
repaired . . . however I must say I am very happy with the low resonant
sound of the gut strings on my 6c Renaissance Lute, plays beautiful and
haunting music. I was quite intrigued by this picture (I had some nude
with Lute pictures taken in heavy shadow but my photographer was
unreliable and would not deliver the photographs . . . so I hope to
have them taken again). A great concert in the Lionel Groulx Metro

[LUTE] Re: Canned Heat

2008-11-21 Thread Rebecca Banks
   November 21st, 2008

   Dear Arto and Fellow Lutenists:

I love the immeadiacy of live performances. I record directly
with one track, voice and guitar/Lute together. I also think it helps
to record in a great space, (a church or really large space) so there
is a little natural reverb. I have never recorded in front of an
audience but I think there can be great energy and interaction in the
performance because of it (however the rough background noises and even
applause can get in the way of a clean take). Also, with performances
is what the performer is bringing to the stage (what mood is he in
etc.) mindset can effect the recording/performance. Being in a really
good mood singing Laments isn't quite kosher, like being an actor,
one may step into or out of the role. I once heard a performance of
harpsichord that was exceedingly dry, technically very well done but
dry as if the performer was wriggling on the point of a pin. When
presenting ones work, it is very interesting the different feel you can
get from the piece (with rock and roll it is easier to landscape the
pieces, it doesn't matter as much) Like listening to the Rolling
Stones, playing the same song in different grooves (sometimes soft and
lilting and sometimes hard and punchy). I think with Lute and Guitar
music it is important to have a certain understanding of lilt, building
to crescendoes and weaving, like a dance, creating an edible song.

   Cheers!

   love,

   Rebecca

2008-11-20 Thread Rebecca Banks
   November 20th, 2008

   Dear Rob:

Some rather nice Lute music . . . I liked the jcc church reverb,
you could still hear the crispness of the notes but with just a touch
of amplification. In my opinion the other reverbs were too amplified
and the original and concrete versions too blunt, not amplified
   enough.

Actually being able to record in a large space with natural reverb
is a gift but some interesting observations.

[LUTE] breaking-in a lute? (What's new at Tea at Tympani Lane Records)

2008-10-28 Thread Rebecca Banks
   October 28th, 2008

   Dear Lutenists:

I have tuned the Bass Renaissance Lute to 433, when I had it tuned
to 440 the two gut bass strings broke. It has a beautiful sound,
mellow and haunting. The keys are free and the Lute seems to be
staying in tune better. I think it would help to play it more
frequently so it wouldn't take a half hour to tune.

There is a new Newsletter for October 2008 at

[LUTE] Re: Displaying Lutes on Walls . . .

2007-09-09 Thread Rebecca Banks

September 9th, 2007

Dear Lutenists:

My Bass Renaissance Lute is arriving soon from Brazil and Luciano Faria.
I have a golden wooden flower medallion with a hook that I am going to hang on
the wall and I am going to tie a velvet tie around the throat of the Lute and
hang the Lute flat side against the wall. It is a low natural light room, I
will regulate the humidity with a humidifier and polish and play the wonderful
art piece regularly. As to people slathering over my art piece, only
associates with invitations are allowed admittance, and I personally do not
know any slatherers,

[LUTE] Re: Displaying Lutes on Walls . . .

2007-09-09 Thread Rebecca Banks

September 9th, 2007

Dear David:

The 6 c. Lute you hang on the wall - did you purchase the Lute secondhand
or did it develop the crack over time having been hung on the wall. With
guitars a crack is not the end of the world, it does not affect the sound, mind
you it is not the greatest to look at your beloved instrument and see a crack
in it. I have a lovely 30 year old C.F. Martin that has some wear (with
cracks) and has had some work on it but it still has the most incredible sound,
like a harpsichord. I expect to keep a dehumidifier on over the winter and it
is not in direct sunlight,

P.S.: Any word on the Lute Society AGM in London - I hope one day to relocate
to Europe and be able to attend.

[LUTE] Early Music . . .

2007-08-25 Thread Rebecca Banks
August 25th, 2007

Dear Lutenists:

I have just launched 11 Ebooks of poetry, 8 of which have original early
or Folk music that needs to be recorded. In an effort to raise financing for
the recording projects I have put them on my Web site,
www.tympanilanerecords.com on the Shopping Page. Also, there is a new
Newsletter offering. I have just finished writing Sleep quiet hearts . . .
inspired by the paintings and life of Gustav Klimt and the movie by the same
name. I am joyously awaiting the arrival of a Bass Renaissance Lute by Luciano
Faria and like all great gifts, great art cannot be rushed. I have guitar
chording written to approximately 200 songs and look forward to trying my hand
at writing Lute music to the Early Music pieces. Montreal is quiet magic.

[LUTE] Re: Sting on Studio 60 from the Sunset Strip

2006-10-17 Thread Rebecca Banks

   October 17th, 2006

   Dear Lutenists:

I was not that enamoured of the modern style rose of the Labrynth
Lute, however different Muses have different callings. I did however
appreciate the Lute music and do love the song Fields of Gold (on Lute
that must be quite wonderful). That song was one of the inspirations for
Sky Blue, also a song of quiet suited for the Lute,

[LUTE] O Sting!

2006-10-16 Thread Rebecca Banks

   October 16th, 2006

   Dear Lutenists:

Having been warned of Sting's Downland CD over the Lute list I then
proceeded to purchase Songs from the Labyrinth. Epitomising the
fashionable humor of the day, melancholy, and I suspect Dowland was
melancholy. And great gifts of Lute. Funny how parallel lines and the
collective unconcious seem to meet and somewhat disturbing. In darkness let
me dwell, Weep you no more sad fountains and Flow My Tears all show
great promise. And great gifts of Lute. It makes me wonder what a Bass
Lute celebration could be. The CD makes me want to take out my Bass Lute
and sing. Perhaps some additions when the Lute arrives,

[LUTE] Re: Lute Finishes

2006-09-02 Thread Rebecca Banks

   September 2nd, 2006

   Dear Lutenists:

Thanks for the help with Fret type . . . what is your opinion of
finishes on a Lute? Is it possible or historically correct to have a French
polish? What is your opinion of oil varnish? I tend to be a little hard on
my guitar with the occasional bump, I think the high polish saves it from a
baneful existence. Thanks for any advice,

   Sincerely,

[LUTE] Re: Fret Types

2006-09-01 Thread Rebecca Banks

   September 1st, 2006

   Dear Lutenists:

I am having a Dieffopruchar Renaissance Bass Lute 6c. constructed and
am wondering if I should have fixed or tied frets. What does it mean to
have a tied fret, what does it mean to have a fixed fret? I would like to
remain true to the original model construction but do not want the Lute to
be too difficult to play. Are there any observations or opinions of
professional Lutenists on this matter? What are the frets like on your
   instrument, how does it play?

[LUTE] Re: Gut Strings for Lute

2006-08-07 Thread Rebecca Banks

   August 7th, 2006

   Dear Lutenists:

With the brewing controversy of gut vs Nylgut strings, I would like to
try gut strings on my Lute when it arrives. Where can one purchase mail
order gut strings for a Bass Rennaissance Lute?

I play my 12 string guitar with phosphorous wound strings - they have a
rich, warm and bright sound that sounds a bit like a harpsichord. What do
   gut strings sound like?

[LUTE] Re: Gut Strings

2006-08-07 Thread Rebecca Banks

   August 7th, 2006

   Dear Lutenists:

I have done some research on the Internet and found AquilaU.S.A. makes
gut and silk strings . . . it will be interesting to experiment and see how
they sound. Of course after phosphorous winds it will be interesting to
hear the different intonation and the lower tuning of the Lute in D rather
than D#. I've only ever had a string break on me twice in 9 years of guitar
playing, although proper packaging could go a long way to alleviate rust
spots and strings missing in action in John Pearse specials. A beautiful
sound if you can find the time,

[LUTE] Re: Fantastic French Lute Festival

2006-04-29 Thread Rebecca Banks

   April 29th, 2006

   Dear Lutenists:

I noticed in all the photographs from the French Lute Festival, the
lute players were all wearing straps on their Lutes. Is this the usual way
to play a Lute? If so what is the button called on the other side of the
Lute? (I have one on my guitar but the name escapes me). They all seemed to
be tied to the peg box head on the other side,

2006-04-16 Thread Rebecca Banks

   April 16th, 2006

   Dear Lutenists:

I am writing to tell you about plans for new upgrades to the
[1]www.tympanilanerecords.com Web site and about a new poetry offering
called The War of the Roses: Ariel, the night by fire.
The poem is an epic interpretation of the civil war of England, 1455 - 1489,
inspired by the Muse, it tells the story of the major players in the
battles, Henry VI (Lancaster) who was considered to be unfit to be King and
the York insurgents, Richard, Duke of York, Edward IV and Richard III. The
civil war decimated the elite and ended with the installment of Henry VII
(Lancaster) marrying Elizabeth of York and the twining of the white and the
red rose, the emblems of the two Royal Houses. It is 17 verses long and will
be a challenge to write music for.

I am also expecting my first Lute, it is a 6c. Renaissance Bass Lute
with Baroque carvings and I am planning to record some original Folk Music
with it. The upcoming recordings will be Prayers for the Poets - Folk
Music based on works of poetry by Classic Poets and Songs From Troy, an
historical masterwork based on the tragic story of the Battle of Troy and
the love affair of Eleyne and Paris with a retelling of the events
psychically intuited through the voice of Eleyne.

Amongst plans for the Web site include an offering of a Free Song
Download. And as I await the arrival of the Lute, I am currently planning
to get back in the Studio to record Dance Summer Blue, an acoustic folk/rock
CD that hints of Summer on the wind. Also, plans include playing down in
Yorkville this Summer on Cumberland Ave. on Saturday afternoons, unless I
escape to the South of France or warmer climes,

   with love,

2006-01-24 Thread Rebecca Banks

   January 24th, 2006

   Dear Lutenists:

Has anyone ordered a Lute from Luciano Faria or is currently talking to
him? I ordered a Lute from him and sent him a downpayment in June 2005 (it
looks like he does good work from his web site plus someone from internet
lute society said he had ordered several lutes from him and liked his
work). I changed a second spec on the Lute order after I set it in stone and
he wouldn't talk to me afterwards (my own fault, mad artist's syndrome). Is
anyone currently talking to him, please apologize for me and ask him to get
in touch. I will be heartbroken if this Lute order does not go through,
