 Gittern, citole.
But I wonder what an accompaniment would be. A 'mere' drone? Can't
be major or minor chords! Random fourths and fifths? A counter
 melody?

Gittern, I suppose. Nice little harp would do well.
I used a 10-course some weeks ago. Only four centuries off! ;-)
David (dodging early music police flak)
PS: Come to think of it, I accompanied L'Amours Dont Sui Espris on a
romantic guitar last Sunday. What's another two centuries?

who knows?, certainly not a lute, which was not yet introduced in France,
if you really want to use a plucked instrument maybe it could be a gittern, a
citole or a psaltery, but there is no evidence

Thanks!

I suppose it’s a matter of not only the right instrument, but also making it
convincing in terms of style… Oh dear! :D
