[LUTE] Re: lion
"The lion in the lute" is a striking image from Wallace Stevens' poem The Blue Guitar, inspired by Picasso, and the inspiration for Michael Tippett's sonata The Blue Guitar for solo guitar. I don't think the sonata would quite work on lute, though P 2009/7/31 Bernd Haegemann <[1...@symbol4.de> Does the collected wisdom have some idea abot lute pieces connected with lions? NOT the intabulation of "The lion sleeps tonight" by Johan Anton Loewi. thanks! I had to look that up: Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting; neither were instruments of musick brought before him: and his sleep went from him. Tuning Babylonion luters, perhaps, as the score will say Liuto Tacet, surely? I played the Ludus Danielus year ago. Can't remember any of us dressed up as lions, though. 2009/8/1 Sauvage Valéry : > There is a medieval song : Ja nuns hons pris , by King Richard "Lion > Heart"... Could be arranged for lute... Very good! Didn't Blondel de Nesle sing for Richard? Here's the myth in the Wikipedia version: "...after Richard I of England was arrested and held for ransom in 1192, he was found by the minstrel Blondel, whom he saw from his window, and to whom he sang a verse of a song they both knew. Later versions of the story related that Blondel went from castle to castle, singing a particular song that only he and Richard knew, and that the imprisoned Richard replied with the second verse - thus identifying where he was imprisoned." There are some _beautiful_ songs by Blondel. I arranged his 'L'Amour dont sui espris' as a lute solo. What I had in mind was this. "And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that nothing might be changed concerning Daniel." (Dan. 6:18 http://www.mechon-mamre.org/p/pt/pt3406.htm ) > Tuning Babylonion luters, perhaps, as the score will say Liuto Tacet, surely? Quickly tuning like Francesco da Milano was tuning, I imagine, as Daniel later eplains what happened to him and the lions (6:23). BTW Babylonian was my fault, should read Persian, as Darius is the related king. > I played the Ludus Danielus year ago. Can't remember any of us dressed > up as lions, though. Wow, I had no idea there were differences. > was my fault, should read Persian, as Darius is the related king. Babylonian mix up of words, no doubt. > Ludus Danielis, that is? I stand corrected. I just found my music (20 years ago ...). including a cheating score I hid behind a stage prop. I'm lousy at playing by heart ...
