The question is to know why the prefix was ./reLyX. How did you
configure LyX? Could you show the output of configure?

That is probably LyX fault (or rather xforms fault).

I made :
  setenv CXXFLAGS = '-O6 -march=pentiumpro'
  ./configure

I'm sorry I didn't keep a trace of the output of configure the first time but
when I run it again on the same install directory, the lines related to reLyx
are : checking for reLyX LaTeX-to-LyX translator... (reLyX)
  +checking for "reLyX"... yes
which is normal... and later:

configuring in lib/reLyX
running /bin/sh ./configure --cache-file=../.././config.cache --srcdir=.
loading cache ../.././config.cache
checking for a BSD compatible install... (cached) /usr/bin/ginstall -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... (cached) yes
checking for working aclocal... found
checking for working autoconf... found
checking for working automake... found
checking for working autoheader... found
checking for working makeinfo... found
checking for prefix by checking for reLyX... (cached) ./reLyX

I did a fresh install on another install directory and then the output is:

configuring in lib/reLyX
running /bin/sh ./configure --cache-file=../.././config.cache --srcdir=.
loading cache ../.././config.cache
checking for a BSD compatible install... (cached) /usr/bin/ginstall -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... (cached) yes
checking for working aclocal... found
checking for working autoconf... found
checking for working automake... found
checking for working autoheader... found
checking for working makeinfo... found
checking for prefix by checking for reLyX... no

When I run it again on the same new directory, the output become

configuring in lib/reLyX
running /bin/sh ./configure --cache-file=../.././config.cache --srcdir=.
loading cache ../.././config.cache
checking for a BSD compatible install... (cached) /usr/bin/ginstall -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... (cached) yes
checking for working aclocal... found
checking for working autoconf... found
checking for working automake... found
checking for working autoheader... found
checking for working makeinfo... found
checking for prefix by checking for reLyX... ./reLyX

So I guess that the problem arises when you configure for the second time. As
xforms wasn't installed on my system, I runned configure twice when I installed
Lyx. Would you like the complete output or the config.cache file?

Yes indeed, we're based in Niamey, EAMAC is the African School for Meteorology
and Civil Aviation. Our school have students from a lot of West African
countries and I'm trying to influence them so that they use Lyx instead of
word. I'm doing the same with my African colleagues by giving them some
courses about Unix and Lyx. There's not a lot of Lyx users around here for now,
but the number is increasing, I guess (hope) that the students will
start to advocate the use of linux and lyx when they go back to their countries.
Here, the choice is clear: it is almost impossible to use our very old
computers with win95 and word, whereas Linux and Lyx perform rather well.
We're just beginning our internet adventure and we have a very low bandwidth
but if you'd like us to become a mirror of the Lyx homepage in Africa, we can
manage to do so...

Abdel.

Great! (Welcome)

Someone has to find the paragraph in the web site or docs that talks about a
development effort on five continents and change it to six. (Actually
counter.li.org says there are a couple linux hosts in antarctica---anyone
know if they use lyx?)

Do you have '.' in your PATH? This is probably the reason why reLyX
is found in the build directory. Besides the fact that having '.' in
the PATH is a bad idea, I am not sure how I could avoid that... I'll
have to thing about it.

I really hope that linux (and to a lesser extent LyX) will help
computing in Africa. It has been predicted for some time, but I find
that it takes a lot of time to take off... It's a pity.

If you think that it could be useful to African users, you are very
welcome to do so. There is some information about that at

I agree with you but that's the default for slackware and I guess that the
newbie won't even know how to remove '.' from his PATH, anyway, without it, the
problem is resolved...

Let's not loose faith. Just by watching how my students are getting
motivated, I'm convinced that it will take off !! But as I said in a previous
mail, this is less than a year since we're connected to the internet so it will
obviously take some time. Anyway, most of the ISP in Africa are based on Linux
and we already have some civil aviation telecommunication solutions based on
Linux systems...
As in Asia, most of the software are illegal copies in Africa and Microsoft is
already talking about this to the different governments. So Linux is definitly a
solution to this problem, and on the road it will develops the skills of its
users Oups, sorry about talking that much...

Well at least this will catch their interests, so I'll do that...

This should not be a problem in theory, I think it is a bug in
autoconf...

I hope you'll be proven right! You said earlier that you had machines
not suited for windows 9x/NT. What kind of machines are these? Is LyX
performance adequate on these machines? It is important that we get
feedback from people using slow machines, since most of the
developpers probably do not see some problems. In particular, there
are plans to remove the so-called 'fast selection' support, because it
complicates the code a lot. Do you use it? Also, is support for
black-and-white screens important to you?

Abdel> PS: Y'a t'il une version française du site???

Non, malheureusement. Il y a un site sur la traduction en francais de
la documentation (un peu au point mort en ce moment...), mais c'est
tout.

I don't really know! A lot of programs have problem with the KDE mode
of sending update requests when moving or resizing a window in the full
grafic mode. We here had problems with tcl-tk applications regulary so that
we have to set that option of and don't display the content of the window.
Also Motif application are VERY slow on updating there content when resizing.
IMO KDE is sending too many update requests and a lot can not be handled
correctly.

Well, that's pretty lame, even if you're trying to hide it by writing it in
french. Could you perhaps convince one of the french translators to write up
a quick web page in french? They don't have to write too much, since the
docs cover how to actually use LyX and they're (in the process of being)
translated already. It would just have to describe the simple aspects of
setting up french LyX. (Which means you could probably copy the mexican
mirror's spanish page and translate it to french.)

The problem right now is rather to convince the french translators to
write french translations ;) As many of us, they do not have much free
time.
