output of ~ and ^

It is my understanding that output of ~ and ^ is not being handled
correctly.

LyX outputs ~ as \~, and ^ as \^.  However, it is my understanding that
\^ is really \^{}, to be used to put above a latter in \^{a}.  Same with
~.

I believe the proper output of ~ is \textasciitilde, and ^ is
\textasciicircum.

Attached are two e-mail messages I sent to the teTeX maintainer.  The
e-mails describe a problem I had with non-TeX fonts where there was no
symbol for \~, while there was one for \textasciitilde.

A week ago, I asked a question about afm2tfm, and I have it working
great now.  Thanks.  Nice to have 500 fonts to choose from.

I am afraid I have one more problem.  For some reason, the caret (^) and
tilde (~) symbols will not print in any of my fonts.  I have fonts from
three foundries, and they call don't print carets or tildes.  I am
printing them as \~{} and \^{}.

I tested the other characters on my keyboard on top of the number from 1
to 0, and they all print, except caret and tilde.

My latex log shows:

Missing character: There is no ^^B in font p052003l!

for caret symbol, and

Missing character: There is no ^^C in font p052003l!

for tilde font.

I see \textasciitilde and \textasciicircum as I will looking around
dejanews, and I am totally shocked that they work, and look fine.  Now,
I don't understand why, because the stock palatino tfm/vf fonts use \~{}
and \^{} directly.  Is \~{} accessing a different font I don't have,
while I do have \textasciitilde?

Was some special hand-coding done in the stock font files for these
symbols?  Seems they weren't in computer modern in a standard way, and
that is why there may be a problem with them for me.  Are there any
other weird characters I should know about?

The strange thing is that many other more exotic symbols do print, and I
am using many of them.  Symbols like the n-dash, and the (c) copyright
symbol print fine, so I must be doing something right with these fonts.

When using the supplied palatino font tfm/vf files, the ~ and ^ print
fine, but the (c) and n-dash don't print in PDF files, meaning the
standard palatino tfm/vf files do not match my encoding, while the
encodings I created with afm2tfm and vptovf did enable me to print these
in PDF files.

OK, I read this on DejaNews.  Seems that \~{} and \textasciitilde are
different, and I don't have \~{} in my font.  Is this person right?

CM fonts use an encoding (TeX text or OT1) that has circumflex accent
where  ASCII has asciicircumflex and tilde accent where ASCII has asciitilde.
When you use something like \~{} you get the tilde accent.  When you use
$\sim$ you get a mathematical relation, not asciitilde.

Use \textasciitilde and \textasciicircum  - of course this requires a font
that has those glyphs (like any of the thousands of fonts in Type 1 format)
and an encoding that provides access to it (like T1, LY1, or LM1).

The asciitilde and asciicircum in EC are kind of a compromise - not quite
accents, but not quite low enough and large enough...

Just put the above disclaimer on the page and add that if people want a
specific feature in LyX they're welcome to either code it them selves,
pay for the development or try to convince another developer with

Customising appendices etc.

Hi all,

I've written my honours thesis in LyX (fantastic program btw, kudos to
all involved) and I'm in the final week of editing and tweaking and
there's a couple of little customisations I'd like to make and I'm not
really sure how.  I don't think they can probably be done with LyX
directly and, although I know a very tiny bit of LaTeX, I don't know
enough for this.

Firstly, I'd like the numbering for each of my appendices to be like:
A-1, A-2 etc. for first and second pages in appendix A. I can get the
numbering to start again but not sure how to customise it to look like
that.

Secondly I've noticed that LaTeX sometimes hyphenates words in my
headings (chapter, sections, etc.) and I'd sort of prefer it didn't.  Is
there a way to mark text so that it won't get hypenated?

Finally, in the table of contents it marks each appendix title as just
"A   Blah Blah Blah" and I'd rather it say "Appendix A  Blah Blah Blah"
to make it clear where the appendices begin in the TOC.  Is there any
way of doing this? (I know I'm being fussy... ;-)

You could simply stack the '1' on top of the '=' with the TeX
\stackrel command, like this:

Announce: LyX 1.1.1

I am glad to announce the official release of LyX 1.1.1, which marks a
turning point in the development of LyX. While it does not have many
new features, there have been lots of internal changes, many of which
have been backported from our old development branch (which is now
extinct). While on the surface this version is very similar to
version 1.0.4, many things happened under the hood. 

As a consequence of this: expect that some new bugs have crept in. 
I mean it.

A few new user-visible features have been added since version 1.0.4:

- Preliminary export to HTML feature (with tth program)

- All the popups should be more resistant to resize actions.

- normal spaces are automatically made unbreakable if we are in
  a freespacing mode (LyX-Code), but not in latex mode. The rule used
  to be that spaces where changed when in typewriter font.

- the default encoding of a new document is now latin1, since it seems
  to be a reasonable default for many people. Note that you can
  override this default with the "Save layout as default" feature.

As usual, version 1.1.1 can be found in the following places:

No patches this time, since there have been very a large reorganisation
of the sources.

LaTeX importer

Thanks everybody for your help...I've gotten just about everything
working =).
I'm running LyX on Redhat 6.1, and the LaTeX importer is ghosted in the
pulldown menu.  LyX DID find Perl on my system.  I've tried to reconfigure, but
it's still ghosted.  Should I just run the converter from a shell?  If so,
what's the binary named?  Thanks!

I remember that SW can read standard .TEX files, but it does with some
slightly retouch in the document preamble. For example SW add
\input tcilatex
before \begin {document}

Inverse is true too: you could transform the .TEX files  generated by SW with
reLyX with no serius changes.  However there are a lot of environments that
not is possible translate well (including figures and tables)

Try to reconfigure after starting LyX - it should the be able to find it.
Not that you have to restart LyX for the changes to take effect.

Yes, absolutely.

Much better unless all your pictures and tables are generated from M$soft 
programs in which case you end up with a lot of extra work converting these
things.

LyX never dies :-) 
It crashes only on very few occasions, actually I cant even remember one.
If it crashes, it leaves you with a file that you can recover from. 
LyX has never "eaten" any of my files, made them vanish or even look 
ugly or smell bad.

Nevertheless, a backup of important work is of course always mandatory.

You were right, it was a problem with xforms.  I'm not much of a sys
admin, and I got the libc5 version than glibc2.1.  Thanks!

That's it. I compiled lyx 1.1.1. on my Red Hat SUN LX with a gcc 2.90.29
without problems. 

I will look for a newer compiler for my Open Linux Intel-Maschine.

in an xterminal (or/and put it in your local .profile) and restart LyX

Non-English math´ texts

Hi.

I am using lyx 1.0.4 and want to write a mathematical text (article
(ams) or ams-book). When I set the document language to "german", I
still get only "Theorem", "Corollar", etc. but not the German
equivalent (Satz, Korollar, etc), when creating the DVI or Postscript
file. (When using just article or book, "Chapter", etc are
translated)

Do there exist special layout files for that purpose or do I need a
different ams package? I have not very much experience with LaTeX as
I always used only LyX, so I have no clue. For the time being I have
put together my own layout and .cls file which is working but not
especially well ;((( I´d appreciate any help!

In addition, I am not able to get German menu points ... ?! In
/usr/local/share/locale/ is the German .mo file for LyX, but even
when setting LYX_LOCALEDIR to the above directory, LyX displays it´s
menues and messages only in English. Very annoying.

Downtime for lyx.org

move baywatch and aussie from my office to the server room.

This move will mandate a ip-number change and it might be hard to get
in conntact with the machines until the dns update has spread to the
secondary Domain Name Servers.

Why not use style 'article' and replace chapters with sections? It
seems to fit what you are wanting to do...

Such a list is certainly a good idea.

But keep in mind that, since developpers do their work for fun, they
will tend to pick from this list things that they like to do. One
solution to overcome this is of course to have some kind of funding
for features.

Also keep in mind that much of LyX work in the near future will be
more on structure than on features. While this is not very rewarding
for the users, we have come to a point where this is needed. Note
however that (well written) patches for new features are still
welcome.

The reason why I am writing this is that I would not want people to

If I may quote my own announce (sorry, I can't find the full text on

In another part, I stressed the fact that there were bugs in 1.1.1,

gcc 295 (aka egcs) as 2.7.2.1 dies on iostream errors and 
I needed the gettext else linking dies at the end.

I really doubt you can compile lyx-1.1.1 with gcc 2.7.x. I tried to install
STLport on our linux libc5 system with gcc-2.7.2.3, but am not able to
compile it's test suite!!! I didn't even try with LyX then :)
