Win32 Port: Included images doesn't show in LyX
Recently I installed the Win32 port of LyX, and generally it works, but the following problems remains: 1) The included images doesn't show up due to some "Rendering Error". 2) I use the Yap and Ghostscript as my viewers. Whenever they start up I get an sh-error saying that sh has performed an illegal operation. (I don't get such error upon starting up LyX). The error is apparently not serious enough to prevent gsview or yap from working, and the everything looks as expected in both viewers. Any ideas how to fix any of these ? Yes, search no more ! - all your hints made me find a solution : in Lyx : - Layout->Paper ->Orientation = Portrait Papersize = "own" Width = 29.6* used with/height = 1.33 = screen proportions Height= 22.25 - Layout->Document ->Extra Options = dvips - Print as file.ps In shell - ps2pdf file.ps file.pdf - acroread file.pdf - set "full screen mode (shift ctrl-L)" and take on a confident smile ;-) Thanks !-) Olav

Unfortunately, the slides layout file is certainly the worst in the
distribution, not because it is badly done, but because the syntax of
the class is not adapted to LyX. Thus the horrible latex code you
see...

Did you set document encoding to latin1? It is strange that it does
not work.

This creates a way of specifying whether slides should be centered
(vertically, I assume). Imagine that the is a variable \LyXsNoCenter
which is set to true with \LyXsNoCentertrue and to false with
\LyXsNoCenterfalse. Then, if you enter an empty paragraph with
LatexCommand \slidecentering, this will set \LyXsNoCenter to false,
since the code generated is
\sildecentering{}
Then some other ugly code will actually use the variable.

I meant having two kinds of quotes for each language, normal and inner ones (or alternate if you prefer). Then we would have two commands quote-insert and inner-quote-insert. I thought that this is more interesting that having double and single quotes. Well, if that's all you need to know, I'm sure all Lyx users will gladly provide you with some information concerning their mother tongue. But I doubt that automagical quotes would work out in practice, since (at least in German, but I think that applies to English as well) the type of quote chosen implies a certain meaning. For example, I'd use single quotes to point out something like ... this so-called 'whatever' ... or to mark an expression which refers to a specific author, but is not a quote in the strict sense of the word, e.g. ... Bataille's notion of a 'general economy' implies that ... One might use italics in the latter case, but that tends to be confusing since italics are used as emphasis and in this case the point is not to emphasize but to mark an expression as terminus technicus. An auto-quote feature would insert double quotes in both cases if the expression were not already nested in double quotes. The complicate matters even further, there are two types of quotes in German, the common ones and the guillemets flipped horizontally. single and double quotes
I have yet to find a way to solve to following problem: how can I access singe and double quotes at the same time? Sure, I can select custom quotes from Layout/Quotes, but I can only choose either double or single ones at a time. For the guillemets there is a workaround; pick the single guillemets from Layout/Quotes and use standard X keyboard mappings to access the double guillemets. But that doesn't work for the quote characters commonly used in German (they're in none of the 8bit iso encodings). I browsed the reference manual, but there is only a 'quote-insert' for the plain ascii quote (ugh); so... any ideas? -- Philip Lehman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Inserting a text into an index list
Hi there, please let me just describe what I want to do: I would like to insert a text between the heading "Index" and the index-list itself, something like Index As mentioned above menue items are printed in capitals. A Article And so on The index list itself should be generated by Insert -> ... Index List. I already tried to insert a footnote, but this didn't it... Can anybody give me a helping hand? Windows port of LyX
Hi all, Does anybody have any experience in the windows port of LyX 1.0.4? I have some annoying problems. First of all, I can't get special characters (like those of German and Swedish). This is probably because of some short-coming in the babel package of MiKTeX. Surely, someone who are using the windows port should have had the same problem. Secondly, I can't change the document style while in LyX. It changes allright when I load a document with the appropriate style, but then it can't be changed no more. I'd be most grateful if someone could help me with this. Alexander
